Another patrol southwest of Uijongbu brought back to United Nations lines two Allied tanks that had been abandoned previously. The day's most sizable action was a two-hour fight east-northeast of Seoul. An Allied armored force hit a red regiment, killed an estimated 200 men and brought back 21 prisoners after a brisk fight. "We probably killed a lot more than 200, but we only reported what we actually knew," the patrol commander related. Still another patrol northwest of Seoul ran into the vanguard of an estimated red division. From the pattern of the day's skirmishes, an American staff officer said the communists appeared to have established a line about 10 miles north of Seoul which they hoped to hold while regrouping for a new drive. While the reds were digging in, the officer warned, "they are not going on the defensive—the enemy has not quit yet." In the air, Two American F-80 Shooting Star jets were downed by red gunfire. Thursday evening a film "Many Hands," concerning the Soap Box Derby history and growth will be shown at the Ikes hall. The same film will be shown again Friday morning at AUHS. He expressed doubt the Russians could move and support many additional troops over the main communications line, the Trans-Siberian railroad. This is already heavily burdened, MacArthur said. 2. As United Nations commander, he made reports to the Defense Department and there was sometimes changes asked, or made, in these reports to give them a "political slant" favored by the State Department before they were passed on to the U.N. The general said these reports passed through the State Department as well as the Defense Department. During a luncheon recess, Senator Russell (D-Ga.) who is presiding over the inquiry, held a news conference. He told reporters it was his understanding that the Jan. 12 recommendations of the Joint Chiefs concerned only military considerations and not political questions. His implication was that the final decision necessarily was influenced by political considerations—meaning the effect on U.S. Allies and other U.N. members.
