For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. — III John_11. CALIFORNIANA—The Mission Play, foremost western drama, written by California's poet laureate, John Steven McGroarty, was given its premiere at the Mission Playhouse, San Gabriel, 39 years ago today. NOSTALGIA—That historical gem oughta bring back a lot of pleasant memories to a lot of Anaheimers. Back in the early '20's John Steven McGroarty, a genial, silver-thatched Irishman with a merry twinkle in his eye, used to take time out from his newspaper activities and speak to grammar school students about California's romantic past. He made several visits to Anaheim and it was on one of these occasions that Dee Calloway cornered him and got his autograph. VIGNETTE—Fireman Dick Bruce called Poundmaster Robert Spencer the other day "Say Bob," By ELTON O. FAY Associated Press Military Affairs Reporter WASHINGTON (AP) — Russia has had invaluable aid from Britain and the United States in making her arsenal one of the world's most modern. Some of this aid was furnished knowingly when Russia was a wartime ally of the west and in the few years after the war; other help she obtained through espionage. Soviet satellites already are using some of these ultra new weapons against fighting men of the west. Russia is racing to be ready with another should she decide on a Third World War, fought with atomic weapons. Soviet military scientists probably would be from two to five years behind those of the U.S. and Britain in atomic bomb and fighter plane development if she hadn't pilfered nuclear secrets and hadn't been handed prototypes of some of the best jet engines in existence. Rep. Clarence Brown (R-Ohio) told the House two days ago that enemy planes shot down in Korea were powered with jet engines a cautious comment on Brown's statement, says the 15 has a "very good engine" which is equivalent in importance to the best of American engines in production." The fastest U. S. fighter in battle against the MIG 15 in rea is the North American Saber, powered with a Ge Electric J-47 engine, with a pound thrust. On the basis of statements Air Force pilots, the MIG seems to perform in combat well as the F88. But there are some notable differences. The range of the Russian fighter appears to be defined shorter than any of the B designs. The MIGs dart up their bases in Manchuria or to the Yalu river, engage U-planes for a few fleeting minutes, then head for home. Explanation of their short range seems to be that they do use (although they undoubted are available) the auxilion "tip tanks" on the wing which give American planes longer range. Moreover, there is suspicion that Russian production mechs and troubles with maintenance. VIGNETTE — Fireman Dlek Bruce called Poundmaster Robert Spencer the other day "Say Bob, we've picked up a stray pig with a dogtag." ... Bob might have been surprised, but he wasn't. Anything can happen in his business—and it usually does... "I'll take care of it," he said... Bob started to thumb through his records. The dogtag on the porker was a couple of years old... He investigated further and his search led him to the Byron Krauss home on S. Philadelphia... Did Mr. Krauss buy a pig? ... He did, but it had vanished. Youngsters of the neighborhood had decided to make a pet of Porky and they harnessed him in Duke's old harness... And when the youngsters tired of their game, Porky decided to see the town... "Why didn't you report the loss, Mr. Krauss?" ... "In times like these?" he replied. "A lost pig is likely to remain a lost pig." ... But through the efficiency of Bob Spencer, the little porker is now making his home in Yorba Linda where he will grow into barns and pork chops. NOTES — Superior Judge Robert Gardner must have the wisdom of a Solomon. He found a just solution to a long drawn out case between Mrs. Annie Groover and Frank Belmont. They tell me that Morley Theaker (who was reared in Anaheim), is a big gear with the Sears people. Incidentally, Theaker lost several fingers while working his way through college—he got his hand caught in a shredded wheat shredder back in Battle Creek, Mich. ... The Edison company helped boost Fullerton's building permits. The concern is building a $149,000 establishment at Brookhurst and Valencia... Citrus Growers, Inc., of which George Graham is manager, took out an additional permit to build a $12,800 clinic at its Mexican National Soviet military scientists probably would be from two to five years behind those of the U.S. and Britain in atomic bomb and fighter plane development if she hadn't pilfered nuclear secrets and hadn't been handed prototypes of some of the best jet engines in existence. Rep. Clarence Brown (R-Ohio) told the House two days ago that enemy planes shot down in Korea were powered with jet engines made in Great Britain. The record indicates that the engines in the MIG 15s being flown by someone for the Chinese communists were not actually made in Britain. But they undoubtedly are perfected models of one of two British-designed engines sent by Britain to Russia in 1946 and 1947. The United States Air Force, in Angling (Continued from Page 2) striped bass fishermen hard. The sardine situation has been so bad that Mel's bait shop at Sausalito has at time refused to handle the inferior frozen stuff offered. The big bass still seem to be pretty well down and out of the shallower sloughs and waterways. Good reports were had last weekend from the areas off blind point, at Santa Clara shoals and San Andreas shoals. The best fish all were taken fishing deep. Some bass are reported up the Sacramento and Feather rivers but the run hasn't really developed there yet. Quite a few small ones were taken off China camp, but no big ones during the past week. Black bass fishing appears to have slowed down in the Watsonville area the past week or so. The 3 to 5 pounders that were coming out of Jinto and Kelly lakes a month ago seem to have decided to "sit out" the unsettled weather of recent days. Some littler fellers up to a pound and a half are being raised, but the bigger ones likely won't warm up again until the weather does likewise. Letbetter collapsed and died a few minutes after firing the shot. Thomas later was taken into custody at the county hospital where he had gone to have his wound treated. Mrs. Thomas and the three Thomas children witnessed the stabbing. Thomas having taken them with him when he went to confront Letbetter with accusation regarding Mrs. Thomas. 1000 HORSE RODEO SAUGUS UP—More than 1000 horses will take part in opening ceremonies tomorrow of the 25th annual Newhall-Saugus Fiesta and world’s championship rodeo. a paint brush. FRIDAY, APRIL 27, 1951 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Ruable Outside Aid of War Weapons cautious comment on Rep. Town's statement, says the MIG has a "very good engine, one which is equivalent in performance to the best of American engines in production." The fastest U. The MIGs dart up from their bases in Manchuria close to the Yalu river, engage USAF planes for a few fleeting minutes, then head for home. One explanation of their short rangeems to be that they do not (although they undoubtedly are available) the auxiliary lip tanks" on the wing ends which give American planes their longer range.
