Anita Defies the Rain - Visits the Circus
Story and Photo by Anita Robertson
Spring and circus time have always seemed to go together, even though it did rain yesterday. Defying the rain and cloudy atmosphere the circus came to town yesterday and the hustle and bustle, the confusion, indise and brassy music hadn't changed a bit. At 10:15 last night the show was over and at 11:30 p.m., the big tents were down, the performers were gone and the grounds were deserted except for a few lonely trucks.
While the big show was in full force your reporter managed to corner one of the performers for an interview. She was blonde and petite Bobbi DeWayne, who has been with various circuses since the age of four and that's a pretty long time for an eighteen year old.
In the DeWayne act there are Dobbli's five brothers and an uncle. Just then a blare of music reached our ears and Bobbi tore her dressing gown off and ran to the tent, shouting "scuse." Be right back. Docked $25 if we're late." About 15 minutes after that she was back in her robe and telling us more about her life.
She said that the circus travels for 32 weeks out of the year. Then the DeWayne troupe leaves it and spends the winter in the cast.
Bobbi said that her parents had died when they were very young
The troupe performs a comebination aerialist, acrobat and trampoline act. While she was changing into a pair of levis, a sweater she said that she went "steady" with a boy from Rivera, Calif., whom she known since she was 11. He usually follows the act around to talk in the show and see her who ever it's close enough.
And as she dashed off with her brothers to be on the way to next town, she shouted for about the tenth time "It's just a mish of confusion."
After two or three hours of trying to pin Clyde Beatty, owner of the circus, down to an interview, I finally caught him in private rail car. He said that September he is leaving Africa, the Bellgum Congo, to a technicolor picture with Nassur Studios. He has been leading safari's and expeditions in jungle's and unexplored territories since 1933, trapping many of the animals he uses on the show.
In 1922 he started as a cage with a small circus. Since then he has been learning the circ business inside and out. Above seven years ago he started own circus. Three nights a week Monday, Wednesday and Friday he has a half hour program on radio in which he tells about some of his most exciting adventures.

next move may be into TV.
Beatty's living quarters with
the show are composed of his private car. It's furnished with bamboo furniture, tomatoe and turquoise colored drapes and cushion coverings are predominant. Stuffed lions, pictured lions and metal lion statuettes are scattered over the living room. There are also two bedrooms, a kitchen and a bath.
Spectacular is the word for everything Clyde Beatty does and owns. His 1951 Kaiser-Frazer interior is upholstered in lion and zebra skins. Mats of the male and female lion manes cover the car floors.
Now at the height of his career,
he has 500 people in the troupe.

The Weather Bureau said most
of the rain is over. It brought
three inches of snow in Big Bear Valley and at Lake Arrowhead,
hall and hard rain elsewhere.
Heavies rain was reported from Altadena and Escondido, each with 103 inches; San Bernardino with 102 and Santa Barbara with an inch even.

DANGED: BEDOUINS AT WORK
TRIPOLI (P)—Desert bedouins recently stumbled across a half-submerged shell on a World War II battleground near here and went to work trying to extract the cordite from it.
They dug a hole in the ground, stood the shell upright and lit a fire around it. Suddenly the shell went "whoosh" and took off. Authorities who investigated the fall of a missile in a village more than a mile away said the shell was a German 15-centimeter rocket. No casualties.
AUSTERITY THAT REALLY PINCHES
BUDAPEST (P)—In line with the government's advocated policy
1922 he started as a cage boy in a small circus. Since then he has been learning the circus less inside and out. About years ago he started his circus. Three nights a week, Wednesday and Friday, is a half hour program on the in which he tells about some most exciting adventuresapping his animals and about circus. He went into radio two years ago and now his over the living room. There are also two bedrooms, a kitchen and a bath.
Spectacular is the word for everything Clyde Beatty does and owns. His 1951 Kaiser-Frazer interior is upholstered in lion and zebra skins. Mats of the male and female lion manes cover the car floors.
Now at the height of his career, he has 500 people in the troupe, and about 50 in the advance crew.
He is small, energetic and charming. A nervous energy makes it almost impossible for him to sit in one spot over a period of five minutes.
The annual payroll of Califronia retail stores, totals more than one billion dollars, according to the Census Bureau.
