Salvation Army To Conduct Its Salvage Drive
"Service Through Salvage" is the slogan around which the Salvation Army's Social Service department is conducting its annual spring Salvage Week drive in Anaheim scheduled for the week of June 4 through 9.
Heading the salvage week drive is a committee of local citizens led by Chairman O. H. Renner; Other members are the Rev. J. K. Saville, churches; Mel Gauer, schools; Earle Woodward, service clubs; R. W. Brownell, fraternal orders and clubs, and Howard Loudon, press.
"We are prepared to pick up any kind of salvage material such as used clothing, furniture, shoes, bedding, dishes, bric-a-brac, radios, home appliances, in fact any household commodity that can be refurbished and put back into circulation again," sad Brigadier Ranson D. Gifford, present manager of the social service center serving this area.
"Recording of discarded articles in Salvation Army workshops provides work therapy for needy and handicapped men," Gifford said. The center serving this area last year provided 288,000 hours of such work, plus 51,750 wholesome meals, 18,565 warm
Meeting Opens Speech Sessions By Toastmasters
The first of a series of eight Speechcraft sessions was presented by the Anaheim Toastmasters club at last night's well-attended dinner meeting. The meeting was opened by Louis Taylor, who welcomed the new members of the Workshop. He described the opportunities to be gained from effective speech through Toastmaster training.
The theme of the evening's talks was "Introduction to Public Speaking" and the speakers were introduced by Page Vincent, Instructor Chairman for the meeting. The topics covered included "Success Through Speech" given by Marion Pickle, followed by "What Is a Speech" by Royal Marten. Concluding the talks "We Learn by Doing" was delivered by Dr. J. Ersek.
Vincent gave an outline of the eight-week course and detailed the purpose of the Speechcraft Workshop.
Table: Topic chairman for the evening was Ralph Alexander, who selected "Personal Experiences" for the subject.
The meeting closed with a question and answer period in which points covered by the talks were discussed in more detail.
The Invocation was given by Kenneth Houler, and the meeting
On a lovely spring day, when it is just too nice to stay in the house, do you ever have the urge to get into the car and go somewhere?
Perhaps the urge is part of the spring fever we hear so much about. Maybe so. Whatever it is a change of scene does worlds of good. And the beautiful country side, colorful and green at this time of the year, is too pretty to miss.
My enthusiasm comes from my ride to Riverside this week to sample the famous buffet lunch at the Mission Inn and to take the Inn's tour. It was a delightful outing, a trip that I heartily recommend.
OUT FOR LUNCH
We left Anaheim at 10:30 in the morning and leisurely covered the 40 miles in an hour. The highway, aside from one small strip under construction, was in exvery light.
Upon our arrival, there was just time before luncheon (the dining room opens at 12 o'clock) to walk around the grounds of the Inn to admire the gorgeous tropical gar
Anaheim Man Wanted to See World From Circus Wagon—Here Tomorrow
The boy that wanted to join a circus and see the world from THE BIG TENT is coming home tomorrow. Sylvester Braun is 35 years old and finally realized his dream as he signed a contract with the Clyde Beatty Circus as trick rider and roper.
Sylvester was born in Oregon and lived in Anaheim at 223 N. Helena st. for 25 years, graduating from AUHS. And almost every day of that 25 years anyone that happened to pass along the street could see him out in his front yard working on his rope tricks. Every Sunday for years people would sit in the park across the street from his home and watch him as he practiced for the whole afternoon.
Now the big break has come for him. He teamed up with Barbara Beebe and Randy Brooks, Lucky in Hop-a-Long Cassidy pictures, and the three are touring the states with a tremendously successful act.
Braun is also co-owner of the Ward Stables on Magnolia ave., in Long Beach, where he is now residing. In the fall he will tour the middlewest with the big rodeos, mostly with Williams and Lee attractions.

OUT FOR LUNCH
We left Anaheim at 10:30 in the morning and leisurely covered the 40 miles in an hour. The highway, aside from one small strip under construction, was in exvery light.
Upon our arrival, there was just time before luncheon (the dining room opens at 12 o'clock) to walk around the grounds of the Inn to admire the gorgeous tropical gardens and to watch a few hardy souls cavort in the outdoor swimming pool.
The hotel offers various types of meal service but it was the buffet which tempted us. The buffet table was set up in the center of the picturesque dining room. Each diner serves himself to an amazing variety of salads, cold cuts, relishes, cheese, breads and hot entrees. Each dish was more attractive than the last, and to our complete satisfaction we found everything to be delicious.
MISSION NOT A MISSION
While the functional purpose of the Mission Inn is the same as that of any other hotel—the providing of meals and lodging—the Inn's fame is based equally on its architectural design and arrangement, its chapels and art galleries, its collections of historical and art objects and its Famous Flyers' Wall.
The Mission Inn was founded by an easterner, Frank A. Miller, more than 75 years ago. He was so taken with the romantic charm of California's Spanish colonial history that he began to construct his hotel along the lines of the historic missions.
The Inn is not a Mission. There has never been a Mission in River-side. But so well was the Mission idea carried out by Frank Miller, that interested travelers have come from all over the world to see it.
The Inn has been host to five presidents. The non-sectarian Mission Inn chapels have been the setting for countless weddings. America's most proficient aviators have left their autographs on the Flyers' Wall.
