For Results and Quick 7 Anaheim Gazette MONDAY, APRIL 23, 1981 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA. Test Wells Would be Drilled Above Prado Dam to Save Water Proposal to drill test wells in the marshes along the Santa Ana river above Prado dam was under study today by Orange county water officials and leaders of water interests in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. An engineering report by Thomas H. Moans, consulting engineer on water reclamation, and Engineer George Osborne of the Orange County flood control district, recommended the test water wells as the next step of saving water in the Prado basin. They proposed the wells be drilled about 1000 feet northeast of Rlncon rd. and not less than 1000 feet from the river's main channel. The report is an analysis of studies which were made in connection with the recent construction by Orange county of the second unit of a pipeline upstream from the dam. While the 1000-ft long pipeline was being laid it was necessary to remove the water from the work site and the flood control district test holes to determine effects of "unwatering." "It is possible to drain the land beyond the river by pumping on Big River Still On Rampage in Iowa, Illinois By The Associated Press The swollen Mississippi, on a springtime spree, plagued Iowa and Illinois towns along its upper reaches today after spreading havoc in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Eighty square blocks of Dubuque, Ia. were under water Sunday as the big river crested at 22.7 feet to top the 1880 record of 21.5 feet. Downstream from Dubuque, patrol labored through the night sandbagging dikes. Highway 30 on both sides of the Clinton, Ia.-Fulton, Ill., bridge were water covered. Floodwater surrounded Sabula, Ia., and authorities there said that if either of two dikes should give way the town will be submerged by 12 feet of water. The Mississippi is expected to crest at 19.5 feet at Sabula today. Golden Citrus Pays Growers $1,700,000 Final payment and accounting to growers has been completed for Valencia oranges processed by Golden Citrus Juices, Inc., according to Dr. J. L. Heid, general manager of the Fullerton company. With the issue of these checks and statements, the total payments for fruit will be nearly $1,700,000 for all districts. The overall average payout for Valencia oranges processed by Golden Citrus Juices is in excess of $46.00 a ton. Handling juice fruit for growers shipping through American Fruit Growers Incorporated owned and affiliated packing houses, Golden Citrus Juices is the first major processing plant to make complete returns to growers for their 1950 fruit. The prompt payout and accounting is in keeping with firm's policy of utilizing processing grade fruit to the best advantage in order to make the highest possible cash return for such fruit. In addition to being the first plant to make final settlement for fruit, Golden Citrus Juices also rung up several notable accomplishments during this, the plant's first year of operation. While the 1000-ft. long pipeline was being laid it was necessary to remove the water from the work site and the flood control district test holes to determine effects of "unwatering." "It is possible to drain the land beyond the river by pumping on the north side," Flood Control Engineer J. A. Bradley said. "The result, however, will be an increased loss of water from the stream." The next step of sinking test wells in the swampy area would provide definite data on whether the pumping would have an adverse effect on underground water supplies of Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Water users in those two counties, particularly in the Chino basin, had objected to the Orange county plan to drain the swamps because they feared loss of their own water supplies. An agreement was signed some months ago to permit tests while engineers from all parties studied the results. The agreement forestalled threatened law suits over water rights. Orange county engineers for years have said that from 8000 to 12,000-acre feet of water are lost each year in the swampy area from evaporation and transpiration. They advocated draining the marshes to bring the water to Orange county by pipeline. Fremont Open House will be held Tuesday for Public Schools Week. All class rooms will be open for inspection. Highway 30 on both sides of the Clinton, Ia-Fulton, Ill., bridge were water covered. Floodwater surrounded Sabula, Ia., and authorities there said that if either of two dikes should give way the town will be submerged by 12 feet of water. The Mississippi is expected to crest at 19.5 feet at Sabula today and at 20.7 feet at Clinton Wednesday. Police Chief Ed Loftus of Fulton, Ill., said there was little chance of holding the dike south of Fulton." He said if it goes, 40 families will be forced from their homes. Illinois communities on the river builtressed levees. Rock Island set up an arc-shaped flood wall to protect the city of 49,000. Drury and New Boston, Ill., called for more men to help strengthen levees. High winds hampered workers at Drury, as well as in Muscatine Ia. Muscatine is expecting a crest of 21.5 feet Wednesday. The water temporarily dropped 1 of a foot there Sunday after the Mississippi washed a 700-foot break in the levee at Port Luisia, Ia. sending water over 700 acres of rich farmland and a government game preserve. At Davenport, Ia., across the river from Rock Island, Ill., flood waters forced 1200 persons from their homes. In Wisconsin, at Prairie Du Chien and La Cross, there was still plenty of water to cope with although the Mississippi crested last week. Red Cross officials said it will take up to two weeks to get all of hundreds of evacuees back into their homes. Calendar Monday, April 23 20:30 Club—5 p.m. Knights of Columbus—5 p.m., at 215 E. The high quality of our finished product enabled our sales department to gain premium prices for all grades of juice products." As one of Orange county's newest industrial concerns, Golden Citrus Juices employs 50 regularly. Work Pushed on Housing Project With the laying of sewer and water mains, curb installations are now under way at the new 104 home project of the Lifetime Co. at 721 E. Chapman in Fullerton. Rapid advancement is being made with grading and paving in preparation for the home site's formal opening slated for an early date. Chosen for its scenic backdrop, the home site is also ideal because of its nearness to Fullerton Junior college and high school as well as market centers. The Lifetime Co. developed special plans for the choice location with each plan featuring three bedrooms, two-car garages, and fireplace. Agents are at tract daily and the public is invited to inspect these homes at any time, according to officials. The other quality features included in the 1000 homes built by the company in Orange county last year are also present at the Fullerton home site, the builders assured. Quick Action Always Use Go MARGARET IN FILMLAND HOLLYWOOD OR — Margaret Truman, here to embark on a new phase of her career—acting—said today that she does not exclude romance from her future. "But there is nothing in the air, so don't start another rumor," the president's daughter hastily added. She did exclude politics from the press conference, held in a typical Hollywood setting next to a hotel swimming pool. She dodged virtually all political questions, particularly those referring to General MacArthur. "I'm just a singer," she said. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. Anaheim Gazette, April 9, 16, 22, 30, 1951.)
