HOMES - C
Permits Issued
For 23-Home Tract
A permit to build 23 homes for $8000 each was issued this morning by Anaheim Building Inspector Homer Wallace to D. N. Schneider, Long Beach contractor, to wind up a slow building week with a flourish. Total for the week was $225,500, with the $207,000 Schneider permit taking the lion's share.
Schneider's tract, No. 1516, will include a new street, Hampshire ave., which will run east from Palm st. just south of the 800 block. So. Helena st. will dead-end on Hampshire ave. and a right-of-way will be left for the extension of So. Dickel st. into Hampshire.
Three basic floor plans will be used for the 1120 square foot homes which will be placed on 55 by 120 foot lots.

Garden Gossip
Isn't it interesting how common names are attached to plants because of their appearance or characteristics? It seems very natural, for instance, to call the interesting BRUNFEISIA shrub, "YESTERDAY, TODAY, and TOMORROW", because the deep VIOLET fragrant BLOSSOM changes first to LAVENDER, then WHITE in three days' time. This attractive, shiny-foliaged shrub is ideally suited for a spot shaded by a DECIDUOUS TREE to shelter it from the hot summer sun. You should see them now, beginning to flower—also the popular PERSIAN LILAC, SPIREA, CASSIA and other FLOWERING SHRUBS.
As you revamp your PATIO for SUMMER OUTDOOR LIVING, don't overlook the use of CEMENT CURBING to border the FLOWER BEDS. We have both the SCALLOP and PLAIN TOP CURBING and TREE RINGS. REDWOOD TUBS for SPECIEMEN PLANTS are very practical to set here and there. And, of course, nothing makes a garden more inviting than BEAUTIFUL HANGING BASKETS OF FUSCHIAS, TUBEROUS BEGONIAS or some other trailing plant.

Varied Plantings Favored in April
April is an all-out planting month. It's the one season in the year when just about everything goes; and grows. Plants are now eager to start putting on their annual burst of speed. It's Spring again.
Garden subjects are now exerting themselves in rapid growth. To sustain this energy you must feed your plants. This is the time when feeding really pays off.
With all the danger of frosty weather behind we can now sow out in the open. Vegetable and flower seedlings are now available in a wide assortment. They provide an easy and safe method of growing vegetables as well as annual and perennial flowering specimens.
This is the time to go after weeds. They respond quickly to warm weather and are much easier to eradicate when young than after becoming established. Soil cultivation aids in keeping down weed growth and should be started as soon as you can distinguish between weeds and planted subjects.
Make sure that all vines are adequately fastened to a support or framework. The new growth may cause them to become top-heavy. Unless supported properly they may topple over. It is necessary that the leading stems be tied as they grow. This is a job that should be carefully watched.

Building codes are designed to protect the health and safety of the individual as well as of the community. They are like most laws in that regard, but there is the difference that they can be, and are, changed as conditions, materials, etc., are improved.
It was less than a hundred years ago, 1862, that the first code was formulated. It had to do with fire hazards and access to exits in buildings in case of fire. Portland cement had been known as a binding material since 1824, but it was not used in building to any great extent until the advent of the skeleton steel frame reinforced building that appeared for the first time about 1880. As a result of this great stride in construction, tall buildings, central heating systems, improved plumbing installations and, shortly, electrical improvements were necessary.
The early codes, although designed to protect the safety of the people, had to work a good deal by the trial and error method. In the early part of the 20th century there was a def-

New Home Designed to Meet Shirk Family Requirements
New Home Designed to Meet Shirk Family Requirements
By JOAN S. WHITE
A house is home when it meets the needs of its occupants. The perfect way of fulfilling a particular family's requirements is to have the house made to order. That is the story behind the house going up at 407 Parkway in Anaheim, soon to be the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Shirk and their children, four-year-old Margaret, and Marshal, ten.
The children will have one whole wing of the house to themselves. Their separate bedrooms are each to have a dressing room and adjoining bath. Access to the outdoors will be easy.
To insure uninterrupted calm and quiet, the master bedroom is situated at the opposite side of the house and it, too, will have spacious dressing room and lavatory.
Architect's Plan
In a house of this kind, passageways are a problem. Too many hallways are simply excess space. To overcome this problem, the architect's plan calls for a large living room across the front of the house, flanked by the master bedroom unit on one side and the dining room on the other.
Traffic through the house is directed away from the living-dining area by means of a centrally-located den, a most interesting all-purpose room. By means of a large area of plate glass in one wall, it overlooks the protected patio soon to be landscaped in shrubs and flowers.
In the opposite wall, a double fireplace serves both living room and den.
The walls of the den will be paneled in redwood. This redwood paneling will be used to camouflage a seven foot door at one end of the room. The paneling will slide back to reveal a breakfast counter between den and kitchen. The bar, at tables height, will be ideal for quick meals and for informal entertaining.
A great deal of thought has been given the kitchen unit and the latest labor saving devices will be included. An electric dish washing unit will be installed in the kitchen proper. All counter tops will be formica.
A utility room to take the place of the usual service porch will have plenty of storage space and will leave room for a deep freezer, electric sewing machine, automatic washer and ironer.
Ranch Style
The low, rambling, California ranch type house is nearly hidden by the orange trees left standing on the choice 108x190 foot lot, but a hint of its finished beauty is given by the heavy shake shingles on the roof and the rustic chimney of field stone. The exterior walls will be of stucco with field stone trim.

EASTER PLANTS IN GARDEN
Easter plants that are adapted to growing in the garden should be planted out before they become injured by keeping them indoors too long. Azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, gardenias and heathor should be taken outdoors as soon as their flowers fade. All, except gardenias, thrive in the shade garden in rich, moist soil.
Check Moisture for Mold-less House
BERKELEY—If you leave your house closed up tight while away on vacation, don't be surprised to find mold and mildew growing on the interior walls of your house and on your clothing when you return.
Improper ventilation and excessive humidity are the causes of these growths. Harmless as they may appear, they can cause irroparable damage to clothing and may necessitate refinishing or even replastering of walls.
Lasting control of molds and mildews in or under houses can be achieved only by reducing moisture in the air. Hansen says.
Adequate drainage around the foundation outside the house and several large, well-placed vents in the foundation, to insure good cross ventilation under the house, should be provided.
Proper ventilation inside the house is of major consideration. Closets should have vents in the doors and cellings and homes should never be closed up for long periods of time with no provision for ventilation.
Sources of excess moisture within homes should be eliminated if possible. One such source is open gas flames used for heating. Much water is liberated during the combustion of natural gas and, unless it is disposed of through flues or other ventilating mechanisms, it will condense on cooler surfaces and encourage molds to grow.
