MacArthur
(Continued Page 5)
Jammed sidewalks onto the wide street.
The surging crowds were more than foot police could keep back. But the people were orderly—and enthusiastic.
Cheers were thunderous as MacArthur went slowly by in the open car bearing his five-star insignia.
Balloons, cracker-jacks, MacArthur signs popped up all along the route. It was a holiday crowd.
The cheer was continuous. MacArthur smiled, waved, and occasionally stood in the car to acknowledge the ovation.
His car crept by at a mere three or four miles an hour.
Girls along the route threw roses and kisses at the returned hero.
It was a wide-eyed introduction to the United States for 13-year-old Arthur, riding with his mother in the car behind.
Oddly enough there was really big display of flags Civic Center. Flags hung from of the flag poles—except on reviewing stand was deck in green boughs.
It was not decorated usual bunting.
There were relatively few ice men in the crowd.
About 11:30, 45 minutes the general was supposed to arrived at Civic Center crowd spilled out in front straining steel cables, leaving a single lane in the street.

ANY RIGHT, LET'S GO!
Oddly enough there was no really big display of flags in the Civic Center. Flags hung from all the flag poles—except one. The viewing stand was decorated green boughs.
It was not decorated in the dual bunting.
There were relatively few serve men in the crowd.
About 11:30, 45 minutes after the general was supposed to have arrived at Civic Center, the owl spilled out in front of re-training steel cables, leaving only single lane in the street.
Squads of police moved up to press them back.
Bewildered pigeons fluttered above. Their perches on the city hall and feeding grounds in the plaza had been taken over by MacArthur welcomers.
People were in front of, beside and behind the general's car. Police on three-wheeled motorcycles tried to push them back.
Two blocks were completely filled by surging, cheering humanity.
Others looked down from the tops of buildings. Others perched precariously on ledges.
The general arrived in front of the reviewing stand more than 50 minutes behind schedule. The crowd temporarily held him 100 feet away.
MacArthur used both arms to wave to the crowd on each side.
The crowd responded with thunderous shouts and cheers.
The general stood up in the car, stepped out end began walking toward the stand.
The roars of the crowd rose to a new crescendo as the general stepped into the stand.
He waved and they screamed in frenzy.
Police officers estimated 200,-000 people were massed in the area. They called it the greatest crowd San Francisco's Civic Center has ever seen.
Even greater shouts than greeted the general broke out when Mrs. MacArthur arrived and he leaned down and aided her to step into the stand.
Arthur MacArthur arrived wearing a peaked cap and went up to stand beside his mother.
The crowd was momentarily quiet as the ceremonies began.
Governor Warren, introducing the general, said:
"It's great to have Douglas MacArthur home . . .
For five years Americans in every station in life everywhere have been anxiously looking forward to the celebration of the homecoming of the hero of Bac increased by the waiting is the day."
Replying, MacArthur said the same enthusiasm to the United States.
"Speaking for both Mr. Arthur and myself," he can not tell you how deep appreciation for the well-hospitality with which the city has welcomed us. The ory of it will live in our always."
He dramatically interruptions about how glad for the end of the "dream" in the Western Pacific.
"I whis just asked," quietly, "if I intended politics.
"My reply was no."
The great crowd cheered
"I do not intend to run political office and I hope my name never will be any political way."
"The only politics I contained in a simple known well by all of you Bless America."
On that note he ended the coming ceremony.
After the band had played Bless America, MacArthur for photographers. He both hands above his head a prizefighter.
He shook hands with Mrs. MacArthur went down stairs.
