Oster Home Demonstrates Green Thumb Effect in Small Home Landscaping
By JOAN S. WHITE
The residence of 1st Lt. Eugene Oster, USMC and his mother, Mrs. Vera Oster at 11661 S. Walnut, typifies the beauty that landscaping can bring to a small home.
The home and 55x130 lot was purchased without landscaping in the spring of 1950. Adroit use of shrubbery, flowers and ground cover achieves an orderly, pleasant vista which softens the square lines of the house and provides a constant supply of cut flowers.
GREEN THUMB
While her son was stationed in Korea this past year, Mrs. Oster busied herself in the garden and has coaxed along an amazing profusion of plants in a short time.
Her first step was to draw the plot plan on paper, taking into consideration the final effect she wanted to achieve. Fortified with knowledge of horticulture gleaned from the local nurseries and periodicals, she went with her plans.
The house faces north-east, the few hours of sunshine able at the front are curtailed a large walnut tree. There offered the perfect place shade bed of acid-loving plant.
The focal point of this shade is a tree fern surrounded primulas, fuchsias, camellia anurelia japonica. Lobelia a colorful border.
Lawn space is kept at an imum, contoured with covers of rose geranium, gated ivy and lantana.

In announcing the Senate Aided Services committee's invitation to MacArthur, Russell he feels "the American people entitled to know all of the involved, except those which cannot be released for reasons security" about the Truman-MacArthur clash of policies.
No date was set for the committee to hear MacArthur.
On the point of how public hearings would be, Russell pointed out that MacArthur would heard as one witness in general hearings on Far Eastern policy.
He said the hearings generally will be behind closed doors, that "if MacArthur requests public hearing, it is my opinion that the committee will grant."
Hearings on Wednesday
Russell said the hearings will start Wednesday with Secretary of Defense Marshall as the first witness.

Draft Tests Unfair Say Anaheim Citizens
Most Anaheim citizens believe that the use of intelligence tests as a basis of draft deferment for college students are unfair and not representative of the democratic way Americans do things. That is, if the answers they gave a Gazette inquiring reporter mean anything.
In answer to the question "Do you believe that college students should be deferred from the draft on the basis of grades in intelligence tests?" Men and women of the Anaheim area expressed a majority of "no" answers.
Mrs. Anna Duncan, registered nurse working at the Community hospital, said that she didn't think it was a very good idea. "A lot of people can make a high grade if they are asked the right questions," Mrs. Duncan said. "I don't think one student should be deferred just because he knew taken behind closed doors, but Russell said that as much as possible of it will be made public later, without violating security.
Martin told newsmen he thinks "the proper procedure" would be for MacArthur to make his first speech to Congress.
Asked if Republicans would arrange for a public speech elsewhere if Congress doesn't send an invitation, Martin said:
"We haven't the slightest doubt that General MacArthur can take care of himself."
If MacArthur doesn't address Congress, Martin said, the general will fly directly to New York from San Francisco, bypassing the capital and putting up at the Waldorf Astoria hotel. Martin said he has not contacted MacArthur.

Building Permits
Anaheim building operations dropped to a new low last week with only $21,200 issued by the city Building department. Orange County, on the other hand, maintained a respectable total of permits issued, with $533,331 in permits registered in the county Building Inspector's office.
The Anaheim total was the result of five applications. Permits were issued to Robert C. Loomis, 426 N. Resh st. for a $2000 land; to Leslie Matula, 319 S. Citron, for an $8500 house at 866 S. Claudina; to Ed Dembinski, 611 S. Palm for a $200 porch; E. W. Maher, 733 N. Topeka, for a $500 bedroom addition to an existing structure; and to Williams and Vary, 809 E. Broadway, for a $10,000 house and garage at 552 Grove st.
Sole permit issued for the Anaheim area in the county was to M. A. Peter, 11036 Cerritos ave., for a $10,500 residence.—A.O.
