SC Symposium To Hear Anaheim Composers Work
Student composers from nine western colleges and universities will meet at the University of Southern California April 12-14 to present their musical works in a unique three-day symposium, the first of its kind ever held in the West. Compositions will be performed in a series of seven programs in Hancock auditorium and discussed at an open forum.
The SC School of Music will be host to student composers, performers and faculty members from the Universities of Arizona, California, UCLA, Redlands, Utah, Brigham Young, and Occidental and Pomona Colleges. Between 150 and 200 musicians are expected to attend.
About 65 compositions by more than 40 students will be played and sung, according to a program arranged by Halsey Stevens, associate professor of music at SC and chairman of the SC composition department.
Climaxing the symposium, the SC symphony orchestra conductor
Savitt Foresees US Davis Cup Win
By FRANK ECK
AP New features Sports Editor
NEW YORK—Just before showing off for a European tennis tour, Richard Savitt took time out to say America "has a good chance to regain the Davis Cup."
Savitt, who has come a long way in tennis during the past six months, feels that Sweden will win the European zone and that America will beat the Swedes in the interzone match, thus gaining the right to face Australia in the challenge match at Sydney next December.
If America meets Australia "you can bet either way," says Savitt. "Personally, I'd bet on the United States to win."
The big, curly-haired netman from Orange, N.J., feels that America's team will include Art Larsen, Herbie Flam, Budge Patty, Vic Seixas and himself.
Larsen, national single champion who conquered Savitt in the semi-finals of the nationals at Forest Hills last September, and Flam are ranked one, two, respectively, in the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association ratings. Savitt is No. 6 and Seixas No. 8. Patty, ranked

the sheriff's office that Thomas had taken her and their three young children to Letbetter's house to "have it out."
He had told her on the way that he did not intend to harm Letbetter, but he wanted to know whether she was in love with Letbetter.
She then admitted to him that she was in love with Letbetter, her reported statement said.
The stabbing took place in the front yard of the Letbetter home when Letbetter came out in his bathrobe and slippers to see what Thomas wanted. Mrs. Thomas and the children witnessed the stabbing from the car.
Letbetter's two children were asleep in the house.
SA Schedules Five Artists
Five concerts will be presented by the Santa Ana Community Concert association next season.
Artists who will appear in Santa Ana are Giuseppe Valdengo, Metropolitan opera baritone; Sascha Gorodnitzki, pianist; Virtuosi di Roma, ensemble of 14 soloists; Mata and Hari, comedy dancers and Pierretta Alaric.
About 65 compositions by more than 40 students will be played and sung, according to a program arranged by Halsey Stevens, associate professor of music at SC and chairman of the SC composition department.
Climaxing the symposium, the SC symphony orchestra conducted by Ingoll Dahl, associate professor of music, will play a concert in Bovard auditorium for the visitors and the public.
Andante from "String Quartet" by James Friis, 600 N. Clementine, Anaheim, composer at Pomona College, will be played on the symposium program:

road through the narrow Pukhan river gorge. They were putting the squeeze on 200-300 reds who had been driven back into a narrow neck of land between the western end, of the dam and the river.
On a 15-mile front to the east, Allied infantrymen ran into diehard communist forces. The reds opened up with mortar, machine gun and artillery fire.
About 800 reds dug in south of the reservoir threw a heavy mortar barrage at advancing American troops. Other red units attacked French troops driving on the reservoir's eastern tip.
Farther east strong and stubborn communist forces bitterly resisted an American advance in the Yanggu area.
American and South Korean patrols thrust inside communist lines on the western front Tuesday against strong resistance from dug-in red troops.
American patrols pushing north from Yonggong withdrew under heavy mortar and machine gun fire. Artillery pounded the red positions.
General MacArthur's communiques reported the reds were trying to build up their forces all along this frpnt.
The communist jet fighter shot down Tuesday was the sixth destroyed by the Sabre lets this from Orange, NJ., feels that America's team will include Art Larsen, Herbie Flam, Budge Patty, Vic Seixas and himself.
Larsen, national single champion who conquered Savitt in the semi-finals of the nationals at Forest Hills last September, and Flam are ranked one, two, respectively, in the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association ratings. Savitt is No. 6 and Seixas No. 8. Patty, ranked third in December, is now unrated by the tennis fathers since most of his activity was on European courts.
Savitt, a former Cornell University star, is one of America's steadily improving racquet men. Three years ago he was ranked No. 26, Seixas was No. 11 and Flam No. 20. But since Savitt has passed both young stars.
Recently in Australia, Savitt succeeded where Larsen had failed. Larsen lost in the Sydney championship to Ken McGregor in the semi-finals but Savitt stormed through to top three Aussies. Besides McGregor, whom he beat in four sets in the final, he conquered Frank Sedgman, considered the best tennis player in the world in a five-set semi-final. Before that he turned back John Bromwich, the two-handed veteran.
Savitt's Australian victories definitely put him well up on the list of names for the Davis Cup team. Ted Schroeder is in the running, too, but Gardnar Mulloy and Tom Brown, who with Schroeder lost to Australia in the cup matches last year, seem to have lost favor with the tennis fathers.
Savitt blamed the Australian press method of writing tennis for the untoward incidents that occurred in the recent matches down under.
