Joe Louis Recast As Top Contender
WASHINGTON (AP)—Joe Louis, the aging Brown Bomber from Detroit, is back where he was 14 years ago in the National Boxing association ratings.
The 47-state boxing body last night rated the former champion as the only logical contender for Ezzard Charles' heavyweight crown.
With Louis back in the logical contender slot, Lee Savold, Jersey Joe Falcon and Rex Layne are listed as outstanding boxers.
Rocky Marclano and Roland La Starza still head the honorable mention list but Argentina's Cesar Prion is missing.
West Coast light-heavyweight Harry Matthews was moved up from the second-ranking outstanding boxer to the No. 2 contender for Joe Maxim's title.
The NBA extended recognition to Maxim as the light-heavy king but noted his rating was only "conditional."
It said the NBA executive committee will announce shortly, probably next week, whether Maxim and lightweight champion Ike Williams will be stripped of their crowns for failure to defend them within the time allotted by the NBA last February. Both men were told then to lay their titles on the line by March 31, 1951.
In an apparent effort to placate the NBA, Maxim has notified it he will go against Chicago's Bob Satterfield in a 15-round title
Rams Announce Six Home Games
LOS ANGELES (AP)—Six home games, opening up against the champion Cleveland Browns, Oct. 7, will be played by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1951 National Football League campaign.
President Dan Reeves, calling it the most attractive schedule since the Rams moved here in 1940, noted that while the Chicago Bears will not visit Los Angeles, their place is being taken by Cleveland, which beat the Rams in the title playoff last December.
The Chicago Cardinals replace the now extinct Baltimore Colts.
The Rams open the season in New York against the New York Yanks.
The home schedule: Oct. 7, Cleveland; Nov. 4, San Francisco; Nov. 11, Cardinals; Nov. 18, New York Yanks; Dec. 9, Detroit; Dec. 16, Green Bay.
JAPAN WANTS PORTUGESE ORE
GOA, Portuguese India (AP)—Japan is trying to negotiate for annual exports from Portuguese Goa of 100,000 tons of iron ore and up to 40,000 tons of manganese ore.
Two Nippon representatives said Japan's yearly import needs were at least 6,000,000 tons of iron ore and 400,000 tons of manganese ore.
