KOREAN WAR

expected red offensive.
The strong force which crossed Parallel 38 Tuesday along a 10 mile stretch of the western front withdrew by nightfall under heavy fire.
In the air, American Sabre jets destroyed one Russian-type MIG-15 jet fighter and damaged two others Wednesday in a swirling dogfight near the Manchurian border.
Other Allied planes ripped into communist ground forces and supply lines. They destroyed four tanks, six trucks and five railroad cars in 270 sorties flown by noon.
From the central front came an ominous report that a large group of reds was moving into the communist buildup area north of 38.
Intelligence reports say there are now nearly 500,000 combat troops in this area, primed for the long-expected red offensive. Korea's rainy spring weather and glue-like mud will favor the reds. They may launch their greatest attack of the war any day now.
For the second straight day the big air battle was fought near Sinuiju south of the Yalu river. Twelve F-86 Sabre jets tangled with eight red-nosed MIGs. The Scout Leaders

fires were built and permitted to die down to glowing coals.
In the meantime, the women went to work on preparing meals, biscuits and dessert and wrapping them securely in foil. Then came the cooking operation. The bundles were placed carefully on the scattered coals and permitted to cook, eight minutes on each side.
The results? Hamburger dinners, complete with potatoes, onions and carrots came out of the foli, tehder, juicy and tasty. Bacon and eggs, attempted as an experiment, gave out a tantalizing odor and were delicious, although the bacon was slightly underdone. Biscuits came out a golden grown when properly done, but tended to burn easily if the coals were too hot. One group of women made shish kebabs on sticks, wiener roast style, which were also very successful.
Duties about the camp were allocated in a "Kaper Chart," which directed certain women to take care of the wood-chopping duties, others to peel potatoes, scrape carrots, etc., and others to see that coffee was made—without charring the bottoms of the pots. This bit of outdoor-craft is accomplish-

In Santa Monica, Schaff said McMahan was traveling to Washington for a meeting of the furniture association, but that a doctor ordered him to return home when he became ill at White Sulphur Springs, W. Va.
Schaff said McMahan died at the Home hospital after being taken from the train at Lafayette.

For the second straight day the big air battle was fought near Sinuiju south of the Yalu river. Twelve F-86 Sabre jets tangled with eight red-nosed MIGs. The communists broke off and raced to refuge in their Manchurian sanctuary.
In two days the Sabre jets have knocked down four MIGS and damaged seven others. No Allied losses have been reported. Official pictures raised Tuesday's toll to three destroyed and five damaged.
Fifth Air Force fighters and bombers hammered the red transport network. Preliminary reports Wednesday showed 28 vehicles damaged or destroyed and several direct hits on the Sonchon rail yards.

Chairman, Vinson (Ga.) of the House armed services committee: It would permit drafting of youths at 18½ years of age, toughen the draft and set up machinery for UMT.
Barden said that when the amendment stage is reached, probably next week, he intends to offer a substitute bill.
His bill would retain the present draft age brackets of 19 to 26 years and extend the length of service from the present 21 months to 24. The Vinson bill calls for 26 months.
The Barden bill would retain the same lowered physical and mental standards for induction as provided in the Vinson measure. These are standards used by the military services in January, 1944, when admittingly "scraping the bottom of the barrel" for men.
The Barden move will enable Republicans, among whom there is strong opposition to UMT, to sit back 'and see how the wind blows," as one of them put it, before striking out on their own.

Rep. Short of Missouri, senior Republican member on the armed services committee and one of the three—two Republicans and one Democrat—who voted against the bill in committee, has said he would support Barden's measure.
Administration leaders, although admitting they've got a lot of scraps and much oratory ahead, still are confident the House will accept the UMT features of the Vinson bill.
Cohen
(Continued from Page 1)
"Fill pay this way to Tucson; that would be a good meeting place," Cohen said. "Now let's see whether they really want to ask me questions or whether they're using my name for publicity purposes."
Mededith could not be reached for comment.
Cohen pleaded poverty as the reason he did not appear for the Texas investigation.
He said he could afford to finance Meredith's proposed trip from the $12,000 he received for a swanky armored automobile — which California wouldn't allow on its highways. The custom-built vehicle was purchased by the Texas stock car racing association to be exhibited as an added attraction at race meets.
If Cohen is brought to trial and convicted on the conspirant indictment he could be fined up to $1000 and imprisoned for as much as a year.
