A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones—Prov. 17:22. CALIFORNIANA—On July 23, 1769, Don Gaspar de Portola, the conquistador, and his small band camped at the site of San Juan Capistrano. Father Juan Crespi called it the valley of Santa Maria Magdalena. They were the first white men to visit what is now Orange county. Kiwanis Hear Mayor Pearson Two fine speakers enlightened Tuesday's Kiwanis meeting at the Elk's club. President Shipkey introduced Mayor Charles Pearson to the club and he brought a message about current legislation backed by the California League of Cities which is designed to put the burden of keeping up unincorporated towns on their own shoulders. Mayor Pearson also told of contemplated legislation which would protect the underground water basin of cities which had imported water to take care of their inhabitants and conserve the underground supply. The chairman of the day, past Lt. Gov. Harry Horn, then introduced Joseph Brannon, manager of the Sears, Roebuck store in Pico, who gave the club a most interesting talk on shoplifting. Father John O'Sullivan who served at San Juan Capistrano from 1910 until his death in 1933. He was honored by the church for his work in restoring City Outlines Cleanup Rules. The month of April has designated as the "Clean-up, up and Paint-up" time for Anaheim. The city street, garbage trash crews will join in this movement by making a general thorough clean-up of all areas and streets within the city. For the benefit of the newers in Anaheim and for the timers" too, the following details from Ordinance No. 553 given: ORDINANCE Ordinance Number 553 is an ordinance regulating the keen collection and disposal of garbage rubbish and waste material in City of Anaheim. An interpretation of the ordinance follows: DEFINITIONS "Garbage" means any house waste resulting from the preparation of food or any waste material that attends the preparation food for human consumption. "Rubbish" means tree shrubbery trimmings, grass weeds, leaves, papers, magazines and all other kinds of combustible trash or waste material which dinarily accumulates in the orientation of a household or business. It does NOT include manure waste from any poultry stable, kennel or rabbit hutch, the removal of trees, or hay yard cleanups. "Waste Material" means brockery or glass bottles, tin cans or other non-combustible materials. The chairman of the day, past Lt. Gov. Harry Horn, then introduced Joseph Brannon, manager of the Sears, Roebuck store in Pico, who gave the club a most interesting talk on shoplifting. He broke shoplifters down into three groups, profesisonals, semi-pros and children. Aside from the professionals the women and children from five to nine years old are hardest to detect, he said. The children who do the shoplifting come from good homes, like those of good Kiwanis, he said, and added that the average American child was being brought up very poorly in his own home. Allen Compton, Sears manager in Fullerton, and Al Missildine who holds the same Sears position in Santa Ana were guests at the luncheon. Toastmasters Open Speech Workshop The Anaheim Toastmasters club will present an eight-week speech craft course starting April 23, it was announced by Louis Taylor, president of the local group, at last night's dinner meeting. The course, informal but systematic, will be under the direction of Page Vincent, educational chairman, assisted by Dr. Joseph P. Ersek, and will follow the outline of Toastmasters International. The course will be a workshop in the art of effective speech and is designed for executives, business managers, superintendents, salesmen, and others who are in contact with their fellow employees or the public. It offers leadership training, business and conference technique and personal development, and has met with success each time it has been presented. The course, Taylor explained, is open to men outside the membership of the club so that the community at large may benefit by it. Father John O'Sullivan who served at San Juan Capistrano from 1910 until his death in 1933. He was honored by the church for his work in restoring the historic Orange county landmark. MISSION — Fathers Junipero Serra and Gregorio Amurrio established Mission San Juan Capistrano Nov. 1, 1776. It was the seventh mission in Alta California. Previously it had been founded on Oct. 30, 1775, by Father Francisco Fermin de Lasuen and Lieut. Jose Francisco Ortega. But was abandoned Nov. 7, 1775, when news reached the new establishment that Father Luis Jaume was seized by 800 wild Indians at San Diego, stripped and beaten to death. A carpenter was slain and six others seriously injured in the uprising. HISTORIC—In 1797 a great sandstone church was begun. It was completed in 1806, but was destroyed by an earthquake, Dec. 8, 1812. Forty neophytes were killed . . . Hypolyte Bouchard, commanding two frigates flying the revolutionary flag of Buenos Aires, raided the mission town for supplies. He and his buccaneers burned a few Indian huts, but otherwise left the mission town untouched . . . The French privateer, however, had previously raided and sacked Monterey and plundered the Refugio Rancho north of Santa Barbara. He anchored at Santa Barbara but did not attack the town. ROMANTIC PAST—San Juan Capistrano is the oldest town in Orange county, and is rich in California lore. In 1843, the mission was sold to Pio Pico; but in 1865 President Abraham Lincoln returned the mission property to the church. RESTORATION—First attempts to restore the old mission were made in 1860, when the church weeds, leaves, papers, magazine and all other kinds of combustible trash or waste material which dinarily accumulates in the operation of a household or business. It does NOT include manure waste from any poultry stable, knennel or rabbit hutch; the removal of trees; or yard cleanups. It NOT include automobile or body or other heavy or bulky jects nor waste material or resulting from any manufacturing building, construction or demolition operations. CONTAINERS Garbage—Garbage should be placed in water-tight galvanized metal receptacles with tightening galvanized metal covers suitable handles for lifting rooftops and its contents. Gross Weight of the receptacle not to exceed 100 pounds filled. Do Not Wrap Garbage, or paper or other waste materials in the garbage receptacle. Garbage Receptacles shall washed and cleaned at least once each week. TRASH and WASTE MATERIALS Suitable containers or reductibles should be provided for accumulation of rubbish and waste material. Metal Containers are preferred for cans, papers, etc. Containers or receptacles should not weigh more than 100 pounds when filled. Shrub and tree trimmings should be piled separately from debris, in lengths and sizes can be easily handled. Lawn clippings, ashes, leaves other light debris which is cult to handle should be placed separate containers. DISPOSAL OF GARBAGE AND TRASH Routes and days have been described for the collection of bage and trash throughout the city. All persons should keep garbage and trash as they may cumulate upon their own premise until such day of collection. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1. MENT yesterday did not give a "passing" grade. The exam is the "intelligence quotient" type, designed to determine the applicant's learning ability rather than his stock of knowledge. The testing centers were chosen on the basis of population, college and school location, and proximity to other centers. Each center is identified by a number. Applicants for the tests must identify the center of their choice by the number and city. Among California centers are: 089 Claremont, Pomona College. 093 Fullerton, Fullerton Junior College. 098 Long Beach, Long Beach City College. 110 Ontario, Chaffey Junior College. 130 Santa Ana, Santa Ana Junior College. 141 Whittier, Whittier College. In 1843, the mission was sold to Pio Pico; but in 1865 President Abraham Lincoln returned the mission property to the church. RESTORATION—First attempts to restore the old mission were made in 1860, when the church restoration was begun. The work was never completed... Actually, it was Father John O'Sullivan, the genial, soft-spoken hard-working priest, who did much to restore the ancient California landmark... Under his guidance and diligent efforts, the Chapel of Fr. Serra; the living quarters; the corridor and the mission gardens were restored... During the 23 years he served San Juan Capistrano, Father O'Sullivan etched himself a lasting place in the annals of Orange county history. NATIVES—The Native California Indian was of the lowest social order of mankind. They were a debased race, only slightly advanced from the anthropoid ape. Archeologists doubt if a more primitive species of man existed anywhere on the face of the world at that time. They comprised the weakest elements of the successive tides of migrants from Asia who swept across the Bering Sea and drifted southward to establish the culture of the Aztec, the Maya and the Inca... It was the favorable California climate that gave them a new lease on life... It was only temporary. They would have vanished from this earthly scene, even if the Spaniards had not taken advantage of them in spreading their new order... The contribution of the Spanish and their missionaries ANAHEIMIMITEM—By the Anaheim came into being for the three or four thousand dians remained. At the time of colonization, Orange county part of the vast Los Angeles city—"the queen of the Cow Cities"... It is a known fact that California Indians used to live in the foothill area and only lived through the lush mud covered plain in search of a name... Now, thank God, they have it on the market here and I have a supply in my house. Not only that, but I'm telling all my friends what HADACOL has done for me. LeBLANC, Whose Tireless Efforts For Relief Of Suffering Have Brought Humanity Today’s Great HADACOL Senator LeBlanc in all of his political activities has always championed the cause of the oppressed, and the poor and underprivileged. He was the first candidate for Governor to advocate a specific Old Age Pension... and today in Louisiana, he is known as the Father of the Old Age Pension. In the course of his long, lone fight he has had his critics, but to those who opposed him he has continually stated, "If you do not believe in Old Age Pensions, remember the mandate of the Lord Himself—Honor thy Father and thy Mother that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee." Senator LeBlanc is known as a friend of the veterans. He introduced and successfully passed the law that created the State Service Commissioner whose duty it is to see that every service man receives his just compensation from both State and Federal governments. His activities in public life in behalf of the working man are too numerous to mention here. It was only natural that in his sincere desire to serve the people, that Senator LeBlanc would seek and find a product that would tend to assist the poor and ailing, that would help them lead a more happy and contented life. His tireless study and effort resulted in today's wonderful HADACOL. Why Walt? Why experiment, why give up, why suffer from a lack of Vitamins B₁, B₂, Iron and Niacin? Why not make up your mind to start taking HADACOL today with the positive assurance that it will help you if you suffer such deficiencies or the Senator will gladly send back your money. You have to be satisfied, and since Senator LeBlance has proven by his past activities that he is your friend, you know you can depend on what he says and what he does. Ask for HADACOL now.
