... Whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be the servant of all—Mark 10:24.
TIME—Ten years may not be a long time in a man's lifetime, but believe you me, friend, a lot of water has run under the bridge since March 1941 when Herr Hitler was blitzing London ... Most of us still remember how these big bombers—with the British bull's eye ensigns—flew over Anaheim with their noses pointed Eastward ... Uncle Sam was girding himself for what was to come just as he is how doing ... War plants were tooling up ...
WEATHER—It rained that year! 1941 was a wet year. Actually, 86.24 inches was recorded passing the 24.84 inch-record of 1889-90, but falling short of the 38.18-inch mark recorded in 1883-84, the year of the big flood.
PROGRESS—A decade has passed since Anaheim dedicated a new Santa Fe depot. It replaced the original station built in 1888 when a line was built to Anaheim on gunds subscribed by families of the Colonists ... Thomas Kuchel was serving Anaheim and California 10 years ago as a state senator. He was on five important committees ... Work on the $3-million Los Alamitos Naval Air station was begun with WPA labor ... C. J. Mauerhan acted as
Santa Fe depot. It replaced the original station built in 1888 when a line was built to Anaheim on Linda subscribed by families of the Colonists... Thomas Kuchel was serving Anaheim and California 10 years ago as a state senator. He was on five important committees... Work on the $3-million Los Alamitos Naval Air station was begun with WPA labor... C. J. Mannerhan acted as Chairman of the Citrus institute held at Valencia Hi that year.
NOSTALGIC—You may not remember that Robert Murphy, 31, died of a heart attack while working on the roof of a Fullerton house... nor that Brea-Olinda's Stewart S. (Shorty) Smith was appointed manager of the Orange Lionettes... nor that the Santa Ana river had water in it—50,000 acre feet of water raced under the Anaheim-Olive bridge daily. Santiago dam was spilling over at the rate of $50 acre feet a day.
PROSPERITY—Douglas aircraft officials were looking for housing in Anaheim for their Long Beach plant employees. And George McCormick tried to interest Anaheimers up to 55 years of age into going to work on the (Southern Pacific) Railroad.
PASSING: PARADE—Alvarado Martinez, Worth Connor, Nelis Rammussen, Lloyd Gruber, Adna Moore, Julian Garcia, John Belter, Wesley Collier, Paul Barraza, Edward Wells, Joe Ogus and Ynacio Maziel were Anaheimers who'll never forget March, 1941. It was the month they entered the service through Local Board 174... The first combat unit of the 160th Infantry detrained at San Luis Obispo. Two weeks later 20,000 men were in the new barracks... Joe Mene gave up his baseball career... Franklin D. Roosevelt took to the airplanes to discuss Lend Lease in a fire-side chat, March 15... L. O. Culp, one-time Anaheim coach, lost out as head of the commercial department at Fullerton jaysee... Val Vita (now Hunt Foods, Inc.) was being picketed... A "twister" blew through Newport. Trees were blown down; homes were damaged... Ed Mitchell, an Anaheimer, narrowly escaped.

MEMORIES — Jerry Timbrook and Carol Lehr may not remember what transpired, but they'll always remember March 1941 as the month and the year they were born. A cloudburst shattered rainfall records in Fullerton; 2.51 inches fell in less than 45 minutes. Both Brea and Fullerton dams proved a blessing. And 10 years ago California "good until expired" drivers licenses expired. Red Smith of the Philadelphia Record was in town with Cornellins McGillicuddy and the Athletics. 10 years! A lot of Anaheimers have been born; Some died; some grew up, got married and are rearing families of their own; some went to war, fought and won; some lost all they had to give. 10 years have come and gone—the brighter tomorrow of 10 years ago is today.
