There is every indication that the war in Korea will not result in decisive victory for either side. A stalemate somewhere in the vicinity of the 38th Parallel is anticipated. The enemy cannot drive us off the peninsula and we are not likely to again risk disaster by advancing close to the Manchurian border (if we can) where our supply lines would be long and exposed. At first glance then, the Korean experience may appear to have gained us nothing while resulting in a substantial loss of men, machines and money. But the battle over there has not been without gain. Our original purpose in taking part in the fight was to prevent Korea from becoming the We figured that if we fought this time instead of sitting back as we did when the Jap invaded Manchuria or when Mussolini marched on Ethiopia or when Hitler seized the Rhineland, we could preserve some measure of peace. As yet, we cannot be sure that we have succeeded, but the cost paid by the enemy must have convinced the Kremlin that there will be no cheap and easy victories from now on—if indeed, any victories at all. HENRY KUCHEL 75 Years Ago The frost of Friday night does not appear to have done any considerable damage. This, the critical season of the year in that regard, and if any injury be done it will probably take place during the present cold snap. A building is going up near the airport. There are four separate lines of street railway in Los Angeles. Col. Frank Ganahl, the prominent attorney, was in town yesterday. Cayce and three children of Santa Barbara are spending some time in Miraflores, visiting with her mother, Mrs. Pohlbemis. The building of an office for the Water Company has been discussed during the week, and liberal offers will be made the company by citizens who will assist in the enterprise. Mr. Barborka's new brick block, as well as Mr. Spoerl's new block, which he now has under consideration, will also add to the appearance of Center street. Mr. and Mrs. George Hunter went to Los Angeles yesterday and expect to spend the remainder of the week there. The city falers held a short session Tuesday evening. There were present Trustees Helmsen, Dickel, Schneider and Weisel. Mr. Athearn of the high school appeared before the board and requested free lights for the public library which is comfortably located in the Metz building. Request granted. When this is in operation, it is probable that there will be something of a falling off in the numate. Are we to be without organ come to this place empty and go back full. The navel, or seedless, orange is now being introduced into Los Angeles. Doh Vincente Yorba was in town yesterday and reported his unfavorable brother's condition as somewhat improved. It seems now that he may save his affectionate brother-in-law serious trouble by recovering from the wound entirely. 50 Years Ago Fritz Ruhman is erecting a building on Los Angeles st., north of Chartres, which will be used by C. M. Albrecht as a boot and shoe shop. Henry Albrecht has the contract and lumber is already on the ground. Major Robert Wankowski was in town on Thursday night, March 21, to inspect Company E. The inspection was a surprise to the boys, as no information whatever had been given as to the major's coming. The company was equal to the task. The Major expressed himself as well pleased with the city fathers held a short session Tuesday evening. There were present Trustees Helmsen, Dickel, Schneider and Weisel. Mr. Athearn of the high school appeared before the board and requested free lights for the public library which is comfortably located in the Meitz building. Request granted. The erection of a new $12,000 high school building will add a conspicuous ornament to the architecture of the city. 25 Years Ago E. S. Gregory, who has built a total of 300 homes here in the past 10 years, has taken out permits for seven new five and six room bungalows; according to building inspector Grever C. Waters. The permits amounted to approximately $21,000. All of the houses will be of the latest type. Building activity has increased to a great extent during the last few months, and are selling faster than ever before according to builders. New telephone directories, 2500 copies to supply Anaheim's 2100 telephones during the next six months are now being distributed. This issue according to Manager E. A. Perhaps the allied tween Moscow and Pelip working as well as the Indicate. WASHINGTON—Here are a few facts not brought out during the crime committee probe of the glamor girl of the underworld, Virginia Hill: Miss Hill first broke into prominence among the gangsters when she lived in the Chicago boardinghouse where Chicago's Joe Epstein, then a student in accountancy, also lived. Virginia, a restaurant waitress at that time, frequently brought coffee and cakes to the hungry Epstein. Later, when Epstein got out of school, he became an accountant for the underworld, also began helping Miss Hill. She became a runner for the underworld, carrying money between racketeers in different cities. This was a precarious job. But Virginia was smart enough to keep an intimate diary locked in a vault with a record of the various financial transactions, and instructions that the files were to be made public if anything happened to her. Mobsters on the lam trusted their money to her—a doubly dangerous assignment; for not only was it illegal, but it put Miss Hill's life in jeopardy inside the underworld. The underworld, which lives by a code of its own, knew every time Virginia had a large chunk of cash. The mobsters also knew that if they robbed her, she couldn't report it to the cops. OBLONG VIEWS FROM AN EGG-SHAPED HEAD BY WALDO HUNTER Travelogue... SOUTHERN CALIFORNIANS are fortunate to have within an easy and pleasant Sunday drive the Mexican territory of Baja California, for should they tire of the hustle and bustle of things up on this side of the border, they can, for a day or two, without the bother of passports or visas, step into another land where language, customs, and the way of life are strikingly different, and where the people refuse to heed to the stern dictates of time and, as a result, suffer fewer ulcers and heart attacks than their pale-faced brothers. According to the U.S. consul in Tijuana, about 60,000 U.S. tourists cross the border at San Yutro annually. The sad thing about it is, probably 90 per cent of this number never get any farther into the territory than Tijuana, the lone border town which is about as representative of the Mexican way of life as Hollywood is of life in the United States. Tijuana is essentially a man-trap for befogged U.S. sailors, a garth collection of market stores, saloons, flesh-pots and bawdy houses. U.S. TOURISTS along the main drag in Tijuana think they are dealing with Mexican merchants, but most of the hawkers and storekeepers are Arabs and Hindus. If you happen to collide with a Mexican's automobile in Tijuana, you are "in the soup." Advances are you will find yourself in that fair city's flea-traden jail demanding in vain a U.S. lawyer. If you happen to have a nice wad of Yankee dollars in your wallet, however, you can swap it for liberty. The U.S. consul there once told me that he makes regular weekly trips to the jail to "spring" U.S. sailors and soldiers and check up on any tourists who have run afoul of the peculiar Mexican justice (Tijuana variety). TO SEE THE real Mexican citizen in his normal habitat, one must drive on down the peninsula, at least to Ensenada, a fishing and resort town cradled by what is described as one of the world's most beautiful bays. On the way to Ensenada, about 75 miles below San Diego, many historical points are passed, including the funnel of an adobe mission more ancient than San Juan Capitulano. Lacking the perspicacity and exploitive qualities of the Yankees, however, the Mobsters on the lam trusted their money to her—a doubly dangerous assignment; for not only was it illegal, but it put Miss Hill's life in jeopardy inside the underworld. The underworld, which lives by a code of its own, knew every time Virginia had a large chunk of cash. The mobsters also knew that if they robbed her, she couldn't report it to the cops. At least half a dozen times, therefore, Virginia was beaten black and blue, and her apartment rassacked in attempts by the underworld to steal foot from itself. In addition, Miss Hill ran the risk of being bumped off by her own pals to whom she could never prove she had actually been robbed. Some televiewers thought Virginia Hill's life was a bed of roses. But it wain't. Slow Arms Shipments Britain's new foreign minister Herbert Morrison has complained to the American Embassy that U.S. arms shipments are slow in arriving in Britain. Morrison told Ambassador Walter Gifford, former head of American Telephone and Telegraph, that shipments are so far behind schedule that it is jeopardizing British plans to expand its army. Wherry is Willing Genial Senator Wherry of Nebraska secretly tried to launch a Wherry-for-President boom the other day. But it has boomeranged. Wherry arranged to send a form letter to GOP National committee recommending himself "as the party's presidential candidate." The letter went out under the signature of Republican state chairman David Martin of Kearney, Nebraska — supposedly without Wherry's knowledge, but actually upon Wherry's orders. The letter also included a copy of a speech, plugging Wherry, which was delivered at the Nebraska GOP convention by Delegate George Tunison. What the letter neglected to mention, however, is that Tunison is Wherry's campaign manager. The great presidential boom now seems to TO SEE THE real Mexican citizen in his normal habitat, one must drive on down the peninsula, at least to Ensenada, a fishing and resort town cradled by what is described as one of the world's most beautiful bays. On the way to Ensenada, about 75 miles below San Diego, many historical points are passed, including the forms of an adobe mission more ancient than San Juan Capistrano. Lacking the perspicacity and exploitive qualities of the Yankees, however, the Mexicans have not reconstructed the edifice, and it has been reduced by time and the elements to mere heaps of sun-baked mud. Between Tijuana and Ensenada, too, the tourist may take a side trip of a few miles to a Russian colony where fair-haired people speak Spanish and try to eke out a meagre existence in an arid valley. They are descendants of a group which came to Baja California before the first World War to escape religious persecution in Russia. There is a lot to see down there if the motorist isn't afraid to get off the beaten path. The people, once you get away from the border area, are as nice as you will find anywhere, and down there they don't seem to be so avaricious for that U.S. dollar. In fact, they resent the fact that too many tourists flish their money around as if that were the only thing needed to cement international goodwill. THIS CHARMING land is politically a republic, but you could by no means correctly term it a democracy. A territory of Mexico, it may be likened politically to our Alaska. The governor of Baja California is appointed by the President of Mexico, and he in turn appoints the mayors of the towns and cities. The people have no choice in the matter. All police officers are members of the army, and corruption in officialdom is taken as a matter of course. You can't get anywhere down there unless you know an army officer. IT IS A LAND of stark contrast, with vast wealth and opulence on the one hand, and almost unbelievable poverty and misery on the other and as such it would be a fertile field for communism were it not for the fact that persons suspected of that ideology would most likely be shot or eliminated by other means. For all its shortcomings, Baja California is a nice place to visit, and your trip will be enjoyable if you make an attempt to acquaint with the people and if you make up your mind not to act superior to them merely because you drive a shiny automobile and have more cash than they do. The great presidential boom now seems to have fizzled and the Senator from Nebraska has gone back to his job of herding the GOP flock on the Senate floor, which he does well. Inside the Korean War Here's a brief round-up on recent unpublished facts in the Korean war: We expected to cut off 60,000 enemy troops by dropping paratroopers behind the lines, but significantly the paratroopers ran into little opposition... Until last week, very few communist Chinese had been spotted crossing the Yalu river into Korea. However, last week, large Chinese troop movements were observed crossing the Yalu. Troop trains are now rolling toward the front, and the Air Force is shooting them up at the rate of eight to 10 per day. Some have been loaded with high explosives that have shot 5000 feet into the air... The most interesting report cabled by Gen. Charles Willoughby, chief of MacArthur's intelligence, is that the North Koreans seemed to be getting plenty of Russian arms, including field artillery, but the Chinese are getting nothing. The heaviest Chinese weapon is still the mortar, and Willoughby reports that no Russian weapons have been captured from Chinese units...
