Colonists Lose at Laguna, But Shifts Win for Bees
Anaheim was loaded yesterday—at least the Bees were—as Coach Sam Keith did some wholesale juggling of his track personnel in an effort to come home without drawing a complete blank in the Colonist-Newport-Laguna triangular meet at Laguna Beach.
Overwhelmingly convinced that he had no chance whatsoever to take the varsity meet, Keith dropped several of his varsity performers—who are actually Bees—to the B'squad in an effort to take that meet. The strategy proved successful, the Colonists prevailing with 51-4/5 points to 39-1/10 for Laguna and 28-1/10 for Newport.
The Colonists, who were doped to score somewhere in the 20s with a full squad, did almost that well with its token representation. Larry Kirchman picked up his expected 10 points with victories in the two sprints and the rest of the squad equalled his point total.
Kirchmann lofted a 10.5 in the 100 and almost walked across in scoring his 220 victory in 23.3. But when a leg muscle, which he graviated in practice last week, started twitching again after the 220, Keith kept him out of the relay.

LOS ANGELES — Whether pitcher Frank Shea ever will gain the keen form he display as a rookie for the New York Yankees...
Reserve Clause Threatened Again
NEW YORK (P)—Jack Corbott, former owner of the El Paso club in the Arizona-Texas League, is considering filing a suit attacking the reserve clause in organized baseball.
Frederick A. Johnson, attorney for Danny Gardella, the former New York Giant player whose suit over the reserve clause was settled out of court, said today that Corbett had discussed the matter with him a week ago.
Mr. Corbett asked my opinion," Johnson said. "I gave it to him. I have not heard from him since. It is entirely up to him."
Johnson did not say what Corbett's complaint was, but a year ago George M. Trautman, president of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues (the minors), suspended Corbett and fined him $1000 for his actions.

Bell Offers NFL Schedule
PHILADELPHIA (UP)—National Football league owners view the outcome today of 400 hours of moving dominoes.
And if the operators of the play-for-pay circuit don't like the results obtained by Commissioner Jeff Bell they can play with the dominoes themselves.
The owners or their representatives are in town to adopt a 1951 schedule.
Bell made it clear he has no intention of forcing his ideas on the owners; although he considers three of the schedules as fair as possible.
He figures he has overcome the objection of George Halas, Chicago Bears, to making an annual trek to play the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 89ers.
He's done this by arranging for each club to play every other team in the opposite division at least once every four years.
For example, the Bears will drop Los Angeles and San Francisco next year and will play the Cleveland Browns and Washington Redskins. That is the one thing Halas wanted short of a transfer from the National to the American conference.
The following year, however, the Rams and 49ers will be back on the Bears' schedule but in 1953 they'll be off again, with probably the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles playing the Bears.
But Bell cited there are many physical problems. NFL clubs use baseball parks and stadia in which college teams also play. San Francisco has been trimmed to 168 games from last season, this year, happily, the quiff when everybody else does.
The schedule has been shortened to three games.

BEYERLINES by Ernie Beyer
Today will mark not only the opening of the Pacific Coast
league, but also the farewell to this area by all of the major
league teams training here this year.
Quite fortunately, I found myself lucky enough to attend one of the major loop tailors that year with game being yesterdays between the New York Neighborhood and the University of South Carolina California. It wasn't much of a gaga after the first two fields of my playing, but there were certain factors which proved quite interesting.
The principal one, of course, was her hailed Yankee outfielder, Mickey Mantle, who collected a single, triple, and two home runs in five trips. His infield gave him look like a miniature Jackie Jensen and that's just about the way he looks in person until he starts swinging a bat.
Mantle, who is not yet 18 years old, is a 4-9 because of a bone condition in one leg that almost a sure cinch to stick if he can hold his fielding average at 30 points. A switch hitter, he's apparently pretty potent from both sides. Last year, he poled 12 homers against left-handers and hit 14 as a lefty, himself.
With the Yankees already having DiMaggio, Barnes, Mapes,
and Woodling in the outfield, Mantle would pretty much fill up this portion of the poster. San Francisco, believably, could yet get Jensen.
The Quarterback club of Orange county honored Fullerton's Eastern conference basketball champions last night, and also took the opportunity to do a little coaxing of high school talent from surrounding territory.
Ronnie Franklin, Sholdon Welch, and Donna Doyle all from this year's Sunset League conference from the National to the American conference.
San Francisco, playing in Kezar stadium, presents one of the big problems, said Bell, adding "and it's no fault of the owners (Tony and Victor Morabito)."
The 49ers cannot play in the stadium Oct. 14, Nov. 24 or Thanksgiving Day because college teams have the stadium tied.
"And since there always must be two Eastern teams on the West Coast to play the Rams and 49ers that also throws things out of killer at Los Angeles," the commissioner added.
Satterfield, Maxim To Meet for Title
CHICAGO — Joe Maxim has signed to make the first defense of the light heavyweight championship he won 14 months ago.
On June 27—the Cleveland Italian is to meet Bob Satterfield in a 15-round title bout in Chicago Stadium.
Maxim signed for the Satterfield bout yesterday.
But the light heavyweight champ reportedly is to meet heavyweight titleholder Ezzard Charles in the Stadium on May 30.
The Illinois commission said there is nothing before it on a Charles-Maxim bout on May 30.
The International Boxing club, which is promoting the Maxim-Satterfield bout, made no comment on such a fight.
But Commission Chairman Joe Trier said that if Maxim fights—and Charles before his June 27 bout with Satterfield he will automatically lose his lightweight title under the National Boxing association's rules.
Another city was heard from for a proposed Maxim-Charles bout. Matchmaker Benny Ford of San Francisco said he was told of new players embellishing rosters, the Pacific Coast Leagues into its 49th campaign day.
The Coasters traditionally try to open salute in the basement wars. This year, happily, they quilt everybody else does.
The schedule has been trimmed to 168 games from last season; wearisome 200; the series has been shortened to three games; steadied-up program seems forecast one of the league's most interesting seasons.
The weather man promised keep the sides reasonably close up and down the line for openers today and tonight; an afternoon and three arclight game on the menu.
As of now, predictions for new pennant winner tend to Hollywood, scourge of the ex-tion circuit, and Oakland, the winner last year. Seattle, San Diego and San Francisco are expected to offer strong contention.
The new managers all noted major league performers in this day are Mel Olt at Oakland Rogers Hornsby at Seattle Gordon at Sacramento and S-Hack at Los Angeles.
The holdover headmen are Fainey, piloting the season Hollywood Stars; Del Baker; San Diego; funnyman; Sweoney at Portland and the Dean himself; Lefty O'Doul, stiring his 17th campaign with San Francisco.
Gone are the personalities who brightened the scene last season: Jim Wilson, Seattle's pitch sensation; Suitcase Simpson; San Diego powerhouse; Frank Baumholtz; George Metkovich and Luis Marquez. In their place are a flock of newcomers, plus who ever the majors decide to see out here during the season.
A. B. Chandler, baseball's last duck commissioner will toss off the first ball tonight at Los Angeles. Clarence Rowland, league president, was to attend the opening game at Sacramento today, then hustle over to Oakland for the night game.
A double header launched in season at Oakland, with the Ollie hosting the Portland Beavers a day contest and another un
The Quarterback club of Orange county honored Fullerton's Eastern conference basketball champions last night, and also took the opportunity to do a little coaxing of high school talent from surrounding territory.
Ronnie Sanilner, Sholdon Welch, and Donna Danny all from this year's Sunset league co-championship. A nine-team were at the banquet, together with players from Excelsior and Montebello high schools.
Somehow, it is not too far from the truth to be believed when the organization's president said, "The Quarterback club is no longer solely for Fullerton, but for all of Orange county as well. As a matter of fact, we would like it to extend into parts of Los Angeles and Riverside counties and maybe even as far as Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana."
Alox Omalev, who has scored two straight victories in the EC flag chase, also scored as an after dinner speaker. The Hornet coach recounted his early season doubts when he started with a squad with only two returning lettermen and traced the development of the squad all the way through to the Compton tournament.
It looks as though he's going to start from scratch again next year. According to his rundown, this year a team took this: Dick Maltzberger and then Thomas graduation; Pink Thompson and Jerry Phillips, moving onto Launenberg; Paul Hoolig going to south Carolina State College.
But Commission Chairman Joe Trier said that if Maxim fights—and boats—Charles before his June 27 bout with Satterfield he will automatically lose his lightweight title under the National Boxing association's rules.
Another city was heard from for a proposed Maxim-Charles bout. Matchmaker Benny Ford of San Francisco said he was telegraphing managers of both fighters a $150,000 offer by William P. Kyne, Bay Meadows race track operator, for a May 4 title scrap in San Francisco.
Maxim has had seven non-title fights since he won the light heavy title from Freddie Mills of England on Jan. 24, 1950, in London.
Satterfield, 27-year-old Chicago Negro, lost a 10-round decision to Maxim in Chicago three years ago. The champ will get 45 per cent of the net gate and 45 per cent of any possible radio-television fees. Satterfield will get 15 per cent of the gate and 15 per cent of the radio-TV gate. The IBC did not announce whether the fight will be televised.
Howay, probably dranked.
No wonder the Quarterbacks were out in force to help him recruit some talent. Omalev, however, denied any inference to proselytizing.
Of course we want Ronnie Falkner over here next year," he said, "but that's only because Fullerton junior college is going to produce a Midsummer Night's banum and we've heard that he's great Shakespearean actor."
A double header launched a season at Oakland, with the Out hosting the Portland Beavers in a day contest and another under the arcs, Hollywood at Sacramento also was a day game.
The clubs also hoped for an hour provement financially. Televisi contracts are more restrained. Hollywood, Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco and Seattle have signed agreements whereby each will retain all gate receipts while playing one another at home.
Here are the probably pitched for the openers:
Hollywood (Gordy Maltzberge) at Sacramento (Orval Grove) Seattle (Vern Kindsfather) Los Angeles (Ralph Hammer).
Portland (Marino Pieretti) at Red Lynn) at Oakland (Clyde Shoun and Charlie Gassaway).
San Francisco (Chet Johnson) at San Diego (Red Embree Sam Jones).

Kentucky Shoots for Third Title Against Rugged K-State Tonight
MINNEAPOLIS (UP)—Kentucky, the nation's No. 1 ranking basketball team, meets Kansas State, the No. 4 team, tonight in the Blue Grass state squad's drive to become the first to win three National Athletic Association championships.
Tonight's final, to follow a preliminary game between Oklahoma, A & M and Illinois for third place, will be Kansas State's first shot at a title. And it appeared Jack Gardner's crew was all primed to make the most of it.
Garden to Continue Hosting Basketball
NEW YORK (UP)—College basketball will continue to be played in Madison Square Garden.
That was decided yesterday when the presidents of Manhattan, New York university and St. John's university announced "it is our firm conviction college basketball can be played in the Garden without our student-players succumbing to corruption as disclosed in the recent scandal."
The college heads, in a joint statement, declared the idea "Madison Square Garden is totally responsible for the present status of intercollegiate basketball in metropolitan New York, and that the college gymnasium is a panacea for this evil is a myth."
In spite of the college gymnasium, in spite even of education permeated with ethical, cultural and religious principles, it is still possible to have corruption, if the individual does not exercise courageously the powers of his own personality."
The statement was issued after a meeting of the Very Rev. John A. Flynn, C. M. president of St. John's University.

Doering Latest First-Time Winner
GREENSBORO, N.C. — (P) The 1951 winter tour of professional golf will be remembered as the one on which three professionals finally crashed through into the Important money for the first time.
Latest to turn the trick was Arthur Doering who came up with a closing one-under par 70 yesterday to win the $10,000 Greensboro Open with 279 by five strokes over Jim Ferrier, the San Francisco husky who had won three straight Florida tournaments before coming here.
Earlier on the tour Texan Chuck Kitin scored his first major victory in the Rio Grande Valley Open at Harlingen, Tex., and Marty Furgol, Long Beach, Calif., came up with his big one at Houston. Thus, of 12 major open tournaments this year, three have gone to first-timers and three to Ferrier.
Ferrier's hot final 67 gave him par 281 and second money of $1400. The check pushed him into first place among the year's money winners with $9662.50. Lloyd Mangrum of Chicago dropped into second place with $8611.33 after finishing tied for 11th at 292, good for $285.
The big charge for the gallery estimated at more than 7000 came from Sammy Snead's 33-33—68, lowest round of the tournament. It gave him third place at 285 and man-farmer-ex-school teacher can be depended on to bring his squad to the floor of Williams archid, on the University of Minnesota campus, in the best shape, both mentally and physically that is possible.
Rupp does feel that his team is tired from extensive travel.
"We haven't played a good game in the last nine times out," he said. "Let's hope that we come up with a good one against Kansas state."
Both teams have reported possibilities that one of their stars might not be available for full duty tonight. Kentucky's ace forward, Cliff Hagan, showed up with a sore throat and a temperature of 99.8 yesterday. He was ordered to bed under a doctor's care and treatment. Whether he can start tonight won't be known until game time. Rupp said.
Kansas State's star guard and captain, Ernie Barrett, has a left shoulder injury suffered in the Western final and may not be up to playing a full game. In that case, a six-foot tall high scoring sophomore, Bob Rousey, will be used by Gardner.
Kansas State apparently on its substantial victory over Oklahoma A & M the No. 2 ranking team, and its walloping of Illinois recently, was made a three- to four-point favorite by local oddsmakers.
