Most Anaheim Water Passes Over 300 Miles Ninety-five per cent of the water Anaheim people drink, bathe in and spray on their lawns and gardens, travels more than 300 miles by pipeline, tunnel and canal from the Colorado river before it reaches them. It is lifted over five mountain barriers and passes through four reservoirs, not counting Lake Havasu, behind Parker dam, where it gets its start. It flows through 92 miles of tunnels, 29 miles of inverted siphons, 63 miles of concrete lined canals and 54 miles of concrete covered conduits before it reaches the end of the main aqueduct at Lake Mathiews, where the distributing system begins. From there it travels by gravity another 70 miles or so through pressure pipeline to Anaheim, passing through the La Verne water softening and filtration plant on the way. The Orange county feeder line takes off from the main distribution line at La Verne. The city of Anaheim, at latest report from the Metropolitan Water district, pumps only five per cent of its water from the local underground basin, makes the best showing of Orange county city in its co-operation toward conservation of local water supply. The man-made system which transports the bulk of Anaheim water supply from the Colorado river is regarded as one of the gincering marvels of the age, great $220,000,000 gamble years ago, which has paid richly. A man-made system which supplies the bulk of Anaheim's supply from the Colorado is regarded as one of the ending marvels of the age, a $220,000,000 gamble 23 ago, which has paid off under dam, a few miles above town of Parker, Ariz., is the keystone of the big system. It stores 717,000 acre feet of water in Lake Havasu, which backs 47 miles up the Colorado river. From Lake Havasu, as a starting point, Anaheim's water first is lifted up out of the Colorado gorge through three great conduits and dumped into Gene Wash reservoir, close by the river. From there it is raised by the Gene pump lift a little higher to Copper basin reservoir, passing through Copper basin tunnels at an elevation of a little above 1000 feet. From Copper basin it goes through Whipple mountain tunnels, across a stretch of desert in conduits. S ANAHEIM'S WATER—Parker dam, above, on the Coloriver, a few miles above Parker, Ariz., is the keystone of the aqueduct system which supplies 95 per cent of water used in the city of Anaheim 300 miles away. Behind it is Lake Havasu, rising point of the aqueduct. Passing through Iron Mountain tunnel, Coxcomb wash siphon, Coxcomb mountain tunnel and Pinto wash siphon, the line comes to Eagle Mountain pump lift, which boosts the water 438 feet to an elevation of 1404 feet, where it takes off through Eagle Mountain tunnel to Hayfield reservoir, 125 miles from Parker dam. Here the Hayfield pump lift boosts the water another 441 feet to 1807 feet elevation, high point of the entire system. It loses elevation very gradually from that point, while passing through Hayfield tunnel. No Name, Shaver's and Cottonwood Springs siphons, Cottonwood tunnel, End wash Just Out! After a few miles more in the open, including two more siphons, the line hits Whitewater tunnel, nearly 200 miles from the river, now. The buried aqueduct crosses Imperial Valley highway at Cabazon and plunges into the huge side of San Jacinto mountain for the 13-mile bore through that peak, emerging 20 miles from Lake Mathews. Those 20 miles include the San Diego line cutoff, Casa Loma and Lakeview siphons, the short Bernasconi tunnel, Perris Valley siphon and the Val Verde tunnel, at the end of which is Lake Mathews, its surface at capacity storage 1407 feet above sea level. Lake Mathews has a storage capacity of 107,000 acre feet, and the big aqueduct could, if necessary, fill it at the rate of 1655 cubic feet per second, or more than a billion gallons a day. The distribution line from Lake Mathews crosses the Santa Ana river 10 miles away, near Arlington, and the line has a release valve there which is now pouring surplus water into the Santa Ana river channel at the rate of 60 (Continued on Page 9) serve a good purpose in keeping a boy busy and out of trouble during the day. He hasn't made up his mind what he'll do after school days are over, but is satisfied, for the present, to stick around Anaheim and work his paper route. When school and the paper leave him some spare time, Jimmy spends his leisure on a YMCA membership and in his woodworking hobby. He learned woodworking at school and has turned out a broom-holder for his mother's closet and a handy note-roll holder. Orange County's Greatest Home Buy!
