Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Wine is a mocker... And whoseover erreth thereby is not wise—Prov. 20:1. TODAY—This is D-Day—deadline day for filing income tax returns; and thirty-five years ago General Pershing crossed into Mexico after Pancho Villa raided New Mexico territory. TOWN TOPIX — R. L. Rust, one-time president of the Anaheim Real Estate Board; Norman Lombard, president of the Fullerton Board of Realtors; and Frank Miller, former Anaheim Chamber of Commerce industrial development director, have incorporated as a reality firm in Fullerton ... C. R. Allen. Fullerton city attorney, isn't even going to bother to file an answer to Anaheim's—Preston Turner's—petition for a rehearing of the shoe-string striptease." The appellate court should hand down a final verdict on the annexation issue in five or six days, Howard Greene, the Anaheim builder, is taking time out to visit the continent and the Holy Land. EXHIBIT — Anaheimers are privileged in seeing a daily photo exhibit in the Gazette window. Wirephotos from where ever the big news stories break are tacked no longer side by side. 4-H Carnival At Fair Grounds The annual 4-H carnival is scheduled for this Saturday at the Orange County Fair Grounds. All club members, leaders, and 4-H friends are invited to attend this event. No admission will be charged, stated Anne Girod, home advisor in charge of 4-H Club work. The evening of square dancing, cake walk, and booths will start at 7:30 and conclude at 10:30. Mrs. H. J. Burton, La Habra; Mrs. L. E. Horal, Midway City; R. E. Rubottom, La Habra and Roy Rosedale, Yorba Linda were named as 4-H council committee to plan this event for 4-H clubs. Each club is entering a booth: fortune telling, do-nuts and coffee, bingo, darts and balloons and just a few. For those who like to square dance, the Senior 4-H Club is having a caller for folk and square dancing for the evening. According to Miss Girod, the funds raised at the carnival will be used to further Orange county 4-H club work. The 1950 4-H carnival funds were used to pay leaders' fees to 4-H summer camp. The annual event is sponsored by the 4-H club county council. HUNGARY EXPORTS BOOKS BUDAPEST (P)—Hungary exported 800,000 books last year, "Magyar Nemzet" reports. Most were sent to the Soviet Union, communist China and other iron curtain countries, the paper reports. But others went to western Europe and both Americas. Israel is said to be an important buyer. The appellate court should hand down a final verdict on the annexation issue in five or six days. Howard Greene, the Anaheim builder, is taking time out to visit the continent and the Holy Land. EXHIBIT — Anaheimers are privileged in seeing a daily photo exhibit in the Gazette window. Wirephotos from where ever the big news stories break are tacked up along side of local views by Myles Bradley, the Gazette ace photographer; Leonard Kreidt, local angle photo snapper; and Ernest Beyer, sport editor and camera ace. It is spotnews coverage together with sparkling features such as lovely Anita Robertson's neighborly "Over the Back Fence" that makes the Gazette Anaheim's reading habit. COMMENTARY — As most sportpage readers know, the Los Angeles Angels are doing their spring training in Fullerton. That's good publicity for any town as newspapermen from near and far converge on the ball diamond. Why, the other afternoon Col. Robert McCormick's Chicago Tribune had a direct wire from the ballpark for a running, play-by-play account of the Angel-Cubs game ... The Chicago Daily News, the Sun Times and the Herald Examiner were represented by staff writers and photographers ... It really wasn't much of a game, mind you; but Fullerton got a lot of publicity money couldn't have bought ... Anaheim should do its level best to have a major or Coast league baseball team in La Palma Park next spring. Now—right now—is the time to start working on that! SIDESHOW — Harry Hemus who played ball for the Tuft-Lions people on the old Anaheim diamond after the turn of the century isn't making Hemus special mitts any more. The late Willard Hershberger caught with a Hemus-special. It was such a popular glove that Old Harry had to work double time to supply the demand ... Larry Hemus, who was a fair country pitcher in his high school days isn't in the glove business. He makes sarapes down Laguna way ... Which reminds us that Melita Forster, the poor little rich HUNGARY EXPORTS BOOKS BUDAPEST (UP)—Hungary exported 800,000 books last year, "Magyar Nemzet" reports. In some cases books sent to the west were destroyed or returned by officials of the western powers, the paper indicates. eight, the 17th of this month." That's St. Patty's day. KEYHOLE NOTES — Paul Grand, like any other Union Oiler, might inform you that contrary to press reports, Alonzo Bell did not discover oil at Santa Fe Springs. Actually, it was the Union Oil company that put down the discovery well on Bell's property and saved him from going bankrupt. Bell whose daughter will become Mrs. Elliott Roosevelt was a poor peach grower who couldn't even borrow enough money from the old timers around Norwalk to pay his taxes before oil made him a multi-millionaire and a distinguished socialite. Why, they say, he even came to Anaheim in an effort to float a loan. His pleas wore for deaf ears, though. NITECAPSULE — Folks who know how to relax don't know when to stop relaxing.
