HOMES TONING DOWN BRICKS A red brick fireplace often can be given a softer, lighter color by rubbing down the surface with a carburundum block available at paint stores. LEE'S GAL FRIDAY Garden Gossip How the seasons do roll around! Here it is Spring Clean-up and Brighten up Time again. To get you off to a good start, we have an Enticing Special Offer on Large Camellia Plants Nurserymen say... by Orange County Nurserymen's Association Heathers are a comparatively neglected portion of our plantings, mainly because of soil and water difficulties encountered. However, when planted properly in the right place and given the right care, they flourish mightily, forming graceful shrubs and giving delicate color to the garden. Acid-Loving Like camellias, they require a slightly acid soil—but in the sun rather than shade. They dislike lime, which explains one of our troubles, for most of our soils have too much lime already. In most of our soils it is best to prepare a special place for them. Good drainage may be achieved by actually laying a length of tile drain a couple of feet below the surface and using considerable quantities of the perlite rock product now sold or coarse sand in the soil mixture. A good mixture is equal parts of soil, peat moss or leaf mold, and sand or perlite. If not practical to lay a drain, planting on a slightly raised mound and watering more carefully will accomplish about the same end. Heathers, or Ericas, all have fine needle-like foliage ranging from light to dark green. The unusual hybrid clivia with its strap-shaped drooping leaves may be seen in the immediate foreground. It is about to burst into spectacular reddish orange lily-like blooms. The stone covered well at the right provides the water fall which feeds the outdoor pool. French doors connect the conservatory with a sun room. (Gazette) photo by Kreidt Dahlman Home Combines Indoor-Outdoor Living in Best California Tradition By JOAN S. WHITE There is no place more enjoyable than home when it is designed for outdoor living. Anaheim’s superb climate entices young and old alike to spend uncounted hours in the sun and so the garden becomes living room, dining room and playroom nearly the year round. One of the loveliest backgrounds for this pleasant way of life is the house and garden of Mrs. Louis Dahlman, 14611 E. Anaheim-Olive road. Her low L-shaped house, approached by a winding drive, is nestled amid tall evergreen and palms. Across the broad green lawn, the visitor first glimpses a delightful lily pool surrounded by all manner of semi-tropical shrubbery and flowers. The pool is fed by a sparkling water fall which, amazingly enough, seems to come from the house itself! As if inviting the visitor to lie made a permanent structure. Across the broad green lawn, the visitor first glimpses a delightful lily pool surrounded by all manner of semi-tropical shrubbery and flowers. The pool is fed by a sparkling water fall which, amazingly enough, seems to come from the house itself! As if inviting the visitor to linger, a comfortable bench waits some distance from the pool and it affords an excellent view of the rose garden, the colorful blooms of the camellia bushes which line the front porch, and the first flowers of jonquil and stock peeping from among the low-growing shrubs. This lovely scene is a far cry from the sight which first greeted the Dahlman's when they came to Anaheim in 1903. They bought the land from the old Stearns Ranch Co. and it was 20 acres of land covered with nothing but cactus. But the young people went to work with vision and determination and had built the barn in which they lived until their house was finished. Meanwhile they were busy growing orange trees from seed. These original trees which Louis and Louise budded themselves are still bearing fruit in the surrounding grove. Striving to make indoor and outdoor living blend, the Dahlman's later added to the house a light and airy sunroom and being enthusiastic gardeners soon tacked on a lath house. Eventually the lath house was glassed in and made a permanent structure. Now part of the house and accessible from the sunroom through French doors, it has become the conservatory where all manner of exotic, shade loving plants are grown. An interesting feature of the conservatory is the original old well which is most attractive now with its coat of irregular stonework. A perfect demonstration of harmony between indoors and out-doors, the well supplies water for the plants sheltered in the conservatory Landscaping Is Our Business WE MAKE A SPECIALTY OF IT!
