Bees Win, Then Fall to Hoover
Glendale Hoover became the only team to hold a complete hex over the Colonist Bees this year when it repeated its earlier Bonita tournament pasting by bouncing Anaheim out of the Santa Monica tourney by a 61-40 count in the second round.
The Colonists had earned the second round by whipping Cantwell, co-champ of the Catholic League, in the first game, 48-42.
As it turned out, it was no disgrace for the Colonists to take the bounce from Glendale, for the Hooverites went on to whip Ventura and Alhambra to annex the tournament championship.
The win and loss left Anaheim with a 22-4 record for the year, two of the losses coming at the hands of Hoover. The other defeats were administered by Santa Barbara and Huntington Beach, but Anaheim was able to also turn in victories over those teams. But not so with Hoover.
For a time it looked as though he Colonists might do it as they held to a slim 12-11 quarter lead, but they fell to a 24-20 disadvantage at the half. After that, he Hooverites simply opened up, to blast the Colonists.
The Bees also suffered some of these second-half doldrums in their opening game against Cantwell. Blessed at one time with a 10-point margin, they almost blew it, but they managed to hold on through the final period to pull it out.
Bill Ames became the second Bee to enter the 20-point circle.
‘Grand Slam’ Chances Lost Slim for Field This Year
NEW YORK (ZP)—Chances for another “grand basketball champion this year appears mighty slim.
At least four teams figure to shoot for the elusive get, bullseyeed last season by City College of New York the first time in history.
But things are different this year.
Bruins, Trojans Knotted for Lead
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The UCLA Bruins have pulled abreast of the SC Trojans in the stretch drive for the Pacific Coast conference Southern division cage title. The payoff series between the two, now tied at seven wins and three losses, comes up this weekend.
The slipping Trojans bowed to Stanford 71-73, and had to come from behind to gain a 68-65 win in last week's encounters. The Bruins made hay by mowing down their Berkeley cousins, 75-57 and 62-59. Cal made a great fight of the second game but went down when ace Bill Hagler went out on fouls.
In their previous meetings this season, SC and UCLA divided—53-34 for Troy, 52-44 for UCLA.
UCLA is sitting in a good spot. The final series will be played on the recently - hot Bruins' home court. The winner will have to travel north to play the Northern division winner—either Washington or Oregon — for the PCC.
For one, the NCAA field been increased from eight teams.
Secondly, while CCNY everybody — including them — by sweeping the NCAA NIT titles, it must be point they won all their games Madison Square Garden, and their home floor.
That can't happen this time. The NCAA meet will be in four different cities, with payoff game set for Minnesota March 27. The other sitte New York, Kansas City and Jeigh, N. C.
Lastly, percentages are another "grand slam" per cent.
But that won't discount teams like St. John's of Brooklyn, North Carolina and Brigham Young from these four already have aces for the NIT, March 10 in the Garden.
As Border conference charm Arizona also has qualified an NCAA berth. The chance of the 10 major conferences matically are eligible for NCAA which also will pick independent teams, or "meet at large."

Chances Look at This Year
For another grand slam appears mighty slim.
To shoot for the elusive tarry College of New York for this year.
For one, the NCAA field has been increased from eight to 16 games.
Secondly, while CCNY amazed everybody including themselves by sweeping the NCAA and IT titles, it must be pointed out they won all their games in Madison Square Garden, actually their home floor.
That can't happen this season. The NCAA meet will be staked four different cities, with the yoy game set for Minneapolis, March 27. The other sites are New York, Kansas City and Ragb, N.C.
Lastly, percentages are against other "grand slam" performances.
Talbert Not Yet Out of Davis Cup Spot as He Captures Indoor Title
NEW YORK (UP)—Thirty-two-year-old Bill Talbert, a full-time securities broker and part-time tennis player, today held the National Indoor championship for the second time within the past four years.
In 1948, Bill polished off young Sidney Schwartz for the title. Yesterday, he took on Straight Clark, a 26-year-old comer from Pasadena in the final.

Talbert, who now has won exactly 26 assorted national titles had a light on his hands, but he came through at 6-4, 6-8, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
He said he's going to take a rest until the good neighbor journey in Florida next month. At that time, he'll begin serious work to gain a doubles spot on the Davis Cup team.
"I think I'll team with Tony Trabert, and I don't think we'll have too much trouble making it," he said.
Talbert is largely responsible for Trabert's success as a doubles player. Longpants Bill took the University of Cincinnati ace under his wing last year and brought him along fast that he's recorded as one of the best doubles players in the country.
Nancy Chaffee of Ventura, dedicated her warming up for the broadcaster and she was shut out, but he ed the high jump where he more valuable points.

As Border conference champion, Zippon also has qualified for NCAA berth. The champions of the 10 major conferences automatically are eligible for the NCAA, which also will pick six dependent teams or "members large."
St. John's is considered a strong possibility for one of these "member at large" positions.
Up for NC State and Brigham Young, they need only win their respective conference to make NCAA, the official college championship.
NC State must take the South conference journey, which will hold at Kailua Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Brigham Young cement a bid by defeating coming top for the Skyline at any rate. BYU is asked of a deal for the conference.
Kentucky, the national leader, the only other team with a moment bid in its pocket. The decals, by winning the Southern conference, are in the AIA.
To doubt, they will receive an bid, but whether they'll accept another question, Coach Bob Hupp has indicated a reance to play in two tournaiters.
Two other teams are expected from Kentucky and Arizona in NCAA told at any time now. Are Oklahoma A&M, Kansas, Cincinnati, LaSalle, Ford Murray (Ky.), Seton Hall, eton, Holy Cross, Connecticut, Colgate, Washington Jefferson, Dayton, Baldwinace, Toledo, Lawrence Tech, nine, Beloit, Southern California and Washington.
Furgol New Face Among Winners
HOUSTON (AP) — Golf's winter tournament tour has provided a new addition among the top money winners.
Marty Furgol picked up a $2000 first place check yesterday in the Houston Open to run his season's take to $3880.
Just two weeks ago the 33-year-old Long Beach pm was in a three-way for thirty-first place with $430.
He began lattending his pocket-book a week ago with a second place of $400 from the Hartinger Open. Furgol posted a three-under par 59 yesterday in winning his first major golf championship with a 72-hole 277.
That was 11 strokes under par for the 6967-yard Memorial Park course and matched the total that Great Britain's Bobby Locke needed in winning the 1947 Houston Open also at Memorial.
A strong finish by Jack Burke, a Houston native almost overtook the Californian but troubles on the treacherous sixteenth hole forced Burke to settle for a 278 and second place money $1400.
This jumped Burke into second place among the money winners, his $4116 being topped only by Lloyd Mangrum, Chicago.
Ventura Favored In JC Tourney
COMPTON (AP)—Ventura junior college's Pirates are favored to win the seventh Western Regional JC basketball tourney starting tonight. Sixteen teams are entered.
Jockey Mike Gonzalez, who will ride this winter at Hialeah, is an expert player of the Spanish national game of Jai Alai.
Trabert, and I don't think we'll have too much trouble making it," he said.
Talbert is largely responsible for Trabert's success as a doubles player. Longpants Bill took the University of Cincinnati ace under his wing last year and brought him along rap fast that he's regarded as one of the best doubles players in the country.
Narry Chaffee of Ventura, deceased Beverly Baker of Santa Monica, in the final of the women's doubles, 6-4, 6-4. Miss Baker then teamed with Clark to gain some measure of consolation by whipping Miss Chaffee and Talbert in the mixed doubles final, 6-8, 6-3, 9-7.
In the men's doubles, Talbert and Don McNeill polished off Vic Seixas of Philadelphia and Eddie Myler of Treason, NL., 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, in one of those endless age-youth battles.
Talbert did an opponent who was not disclosed to give up. But Clark was unfettered in that he elected to play to Talbert forte—his backhand. Time and again Talbert left and rightside of the court completely unprotected so confident was he that the ball would come to his backhand.
He rarely was disappointed. This, combined with his superior service. Enabled him to win the last two sets with ease. Still, Clark, for one who is rated no better than Lord nationally, showed some fine strokes especially in his volleying. However, his service must improve. He is to be real threat.
Miss Chaffee, who will fly back over Hollywood television job tomorrowwon the title last year, so this was just a repetition. She had her baseline savvy outwit Miss Baker whenever she needed a crucial point. With a little more experience, she sambidexterous Miss Baker will be ready to make a serious bid for the title.

Button Snares Fourth in Row
MILAN, IL — Men figure skaters from the United States, headed by Dick Button, dominated the men's division of the world figure skating championships which ended yesterday.
Button captured his fourth consecutive world title with a brilliant exhibition, but the U.S. heavily favored for team honors, did little else, losing out in the women's division, the pairs and international ice dancing events.
Button, the 21-year-old Harvard student from Englewood, N.J., was followed in the standings by James Grogan, 19, from Colorado Springs, Colo.
Grogan beat out Austria's Helmut Selbt, European champion.
Hayes Alan Jenkins of Akron, Ohio, was fourth and Dudley Richards, Boston, U.S. junior champion, took fifth.
Jeanette Allwegg of England won the women's HUCIOHORAS as the U.S. champion, Sonya Klopper of Brooklyn, N.Y., finished third.
In the world pairs competition, Rita Barban and Paul Falk of West German team edged out the defending champions, Karol Peter and John Schmidt three-tenths of a point.
Beverly Wins
LOS ANGELES UP — The Beverly Hills Rough Riders defeated the Rivière Rainchelos 9 to 6 yesterday in the opening game of the Troy Miller memorial polo tournament.
Giant Spectacle Marks Opening Of First Pan American Olympics
BUENOS AIRES (P)—A magnificent sports spectacle such as Latin America never saw before formally opened the Pan American games last night in huge Presidente Peron stadium.
The 2000 athletes from 18 nations, including the United States, took it easy or practiced today for the start of athletic competition tomorrow.
More than 100,000 Argentines almost filled the 130,000 capacity stadium for the opening ceremonies. By the time President Peron Juan Domingo Peron addressed "brother sportsmen of America" and declared "the first Pan American games open," there were only a few scattered patches in the vast circular stadium unoccupied.
Beside Peron stood his dazzling wife, blonde Dyn Peron. Cheers for her almost matched those for her husband as she smiled at the throng.
The roar of cannon and fanfare of drums and bugles from a 500-piece band signalled the arrival of Peron and his wife in a shining black hoosine. The stadium stands, brilliantly floodlighted, became a sea of waving white handkerchiefs as the crowd used this typical form of demonstration to greet the chief executive and first lady.
The military band struck up a medley of marches as the parade of athletes in colorful uniforms began. The delegations marched into the stadium in alphabetical order, but Argentina as host took the last place and Brazil's big squad opened the procession.
Big Ten Grants Wilson Sole Rule
CHICAGO (P)—A recommendation granting police power to Commissioner K. L. (Tago) Wilson to enforce the Big Ten conference's "sanity code," has been adopted by athletic directors.
Their proposal, drawn up yesterday as a four-day conference meeting closed, will be submitted at a later date to faculty representatives meeting jointly with the directors.
Despite the action of the NCAA at its January meeting in abolishing the "sanity code" as such, the Big Ten will stand firm in its fight against recruiting and subsidizing athletes.
Wilson is to be given power to make rulings, assess penalties and interpret the code.
Any penalty imposed by Wilson can be appealed, either to a supreme court consisting of three faculty-men and three athletic directors, or an appellate court, made up of three directors. The severity of the penalty determines which body regains the authority.
Lindy Remigami spent the entire week in bed with a virus infection, and lost by a nose to Seton Hall's Andy Stanfield in the 60-ard dash. It was no wonder that the 45 other competing coaches did not begrudge Manhattan its first title since 1939 and initial one under Eastment.
Don Gehrmann beat Fred Wilt a special mile, but he had to grow everything he had into a finishing kick to win by about three inches in 4:08.6 Wilt was so nose that he was caught in the time.
Anita Handicap Finds 15 Ready
ARCADIA — The fourteenth running of the Santa Anita Derby a major of turf history, with handsome Kentucky colt named tough in Tumble the winner, and now comes the third of Santa Anita's hundred grand attractions. That would be the famed Santa Anita Handicap, which will be used for the fourteenth time Saturday, and a lively contest it promises to be.
The casualty list of erstwhile contenders for the big pot is long and illustrious—Hill Prince, Your best, Bolero, Bed O'Roses and others — but sufficient fireworks and suitable betting odds are in prospect for "the mile-and-one quarter extravaganza."
There are some 15 eligible still to get around Santa Anita's power bedecked course, but the rest of one or two of these is not faithful pending later word from stable area.
Regarded as probable starters, however, are such name horses as Calumet stables' famed Coalyn and his stablemate, Allie; Mr. and Mrs. John De Blois' great Circle; Alfred G. Underbelt's game fifty. Next
