far to the north to be included in what it terms the "Central Groups of Leagues." Santa Barbara, which is an independent and which is 20 miles north of Ventura is all right, but Ventura is simply much too far to the north.
Since it was the defending champion and since it had won its league, Ventura put up a squawk to the CIF—it wanted in the tourney. The CIF which had not yet devised its asinine method of two teams from each league consented at last—with the slipation that Ventura would be happy to meet El Monte in the first round.
It wasn't much of a game. It probably wouldn't have been anyway, but it did ruin a nice record for Ventura—it had been in the finals of both the Beverly Hills and CIF tournaments for two straight years.
Don't get the idea that Ventura has been booted from the CIF. It's much more subtle than that. The Preps have been exiled to the "Northern Group of Leagues" which has its own "CIF Playoff." The only trouble is that you win it, you still aren't the CIF champion.
Now, the same situation will

endorsed by Ervin. It was set up as a trial to determine if racing information from legitimate news sources is being obtained by bookmakers. The last race each day and the feature on Saturday are not affected.
Frank J. Starzel, general manager of the Associated Press, and J. S. Perlman, publisher of the Daily Racing Form and Morning Telegraph, issued the statements criticizing the order.
"The Florida State Racing commission's decision to embargo transmission of horse racing results from Florida tracks was accompanied by a reported statement of the commission chairman charging 'information over the Associated Press wires for some reason ultimately has been going into illegal hands,' Starzel said."
"This statement is not supported by any evidence submitted to or obtainable by the Associated Press. The commission chairman himself concedes he has no proof."
"The Associated Press repeatedly has offered to cooperate with the Florida attorney general and other Florida authorities to determine if there is the slightest connection between our transmission of racing information and its availability to bookmaking establishments.

in as many customers as Charles. The gate was $167,870.
The Louis-Walker fight is scaled for gate receipts of around $90,000 with a top ticket price of $7.50. It was originally scheduled for the Civic auditorium but was shifted after that 9300-seat enclosure was completely sold out in a few days.
The Louis box office draw is illustrated by a letter received from Jimmy Murray, co-promoter. It is from a Negro minister in a small Texas town and reads:
"I see that you are promoting a Joe Louis fight there in the city and as our church is having a session in Los Angeles during the same week and since I have never had the opportunity of seeing the internationally famous Bomber in action, I am wondering if you would be kind enough to send me two tickets in a registered letter, C.O.D. I do not know how they sell or I would send the money with this letter.
"I am sure sir, that this is a bit unusual, but I do want to see that fight, and it may be my last opportunity to see one of our boys who has attained the top of his profession."
Ed. Note: If the minister arrives on time he will be Louis guest.

FRAGUE (UP)—Dr. Alofs Neuman, minister of posts, has report-
Don't get the idea that Ventura has been booted from the CIF. It's much more subtle than that. The Preps have been exiled to the "Northern Group of Leagues" which has its own "CIF Playoff." The only trouble is that if you win it, you still aren't the CIF champion.
Now, the same situation will hold true here in this county with Garden Grove. The Argonauts are playing in the "Southern Group of Leagues," Suppose they win that tournament. Can they walk up to some one and proclaim, "We're the CIF champs for 1951." I'm afraid they'll only get a laugh for their efforts.
These smaller teams will very seldom have a team of championship caliber. But if they ever do, they should certainly have a chance to fight for that championship. A small school may have the best team in Southern California this year, but unless it is in the "Central Group of Leagues" it will never have a chance to show it. Or a series of upsets could come along to boost an unknown to the title, such as that series which lifted San Francisco in the NIT two years ago.
Is there a solution? It's so ridiculously simple that the CIF wouldn't even consider it. The Central group has nine leagues, the Southern group has eight, and the Northern has six. That's a total of 23. Put in one independent team and you have a pretty good tournament bracket.
Some teams certainly appear to be stronger than others (Alhambra, Compton, Loyola, etc., this year) and eight of these could be seeded for the first round of play. By the time the first round is complete, there would be 16 teams remaining and play could resume on a normal basis.
Meantime, see you in Pocatello on Mar. 10, huh?

cently cracked the metropolitan area's all-time scoring record, watched in light-lined silence as he was booked. His eyes were fixed on the floor and he evaded the glances of his teammates.
Smith stared impassively through dark horn-rimmed glasses throughout the proceedings. He wore a red plaid lumber jacket.
Bigos was the only one of the three who appeared nervous. He shifted uncasually from foot to foot as he was being booked.
White of Englewood, N. J., paced LIU to 16 straight wins earlier this season. Ratod second only to the University of Kentucky in national rankings. LIU virtually dropped out of the championship picture when it lost four games on a recent Western trip. Its season record now stands at 20 wins and four defeats.
Bigos team captain and a forward, and Smith, a guard also have turned in high-scoring performances for LIU. The three are seniors.
Dr. T. W. Motcalfe, LIU president, announced the three players were suspended from school today.
As an aftermath of the new exposure two major basketball teams Bradley and George Washington disclosed they would not schedule future games at Madison Square Garden for the present 40 losers.
Hogan had indicated the fixed games were played in the big New York arena.
City College said it would play out its remaining three games at the Garden. But it left open a decision on whether it would return there next year or in future seasons.
Last night the city's board of higher education adopted a resolution temporarily barring municipal colleges from making any commitments to play next season's games at the Garden. The board instructed the schools to withhold action pending a report from an investigating committee. The resolution applies to City College, Brooklyn college, Queens college and Hunter college.
Brooklyn college expelled five players six years ago after they admitted taking money to throw a game against Akron university.
Hogan said the three LIU athletes admitted they had been entertained by Sollazzo, a jeweler, and his wife last summer while they were playing basketball in the mountain resort area of New York. Many college players compete in a resort hotel league operating during the summer.
Informed that the LIU stars admitted trying to lose their game against Kansas State in the Garden, Krusas State Coach Jack Gardner commented the favored LIU team did look ragged in the game.
But he said the game was the opener for both teams and we didn't think the ragged play was too unusual."
