Million-Dollar Stolen Car Racket May Be Offshoot of Pink Slip Theft SACRAMENTO (AP)—State sleuths have uncovered evidence of what may be a large scale auto registration "pink slip" theft from the Motor Vehicles department. A suspect picked up in connection with the theft said there are a rumored 1500 of the stolen slips being sold. This could mean a stolen car racket worth several millions of dollars. A detail of investigators, headed by Highway Patrol Sergeant Coy M. Long, after two months of probing, has traced the theft to two men hired for one day in 1949 to move supplies of the Motor Vehicles department. Long said he doubted if as many as 1500 of the slips—which are LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. Anaheim Gazette, Feb. 15, 22, 1951.) "We doubt very much there are that many out," he declared, "however, at that time the slips were not numbered and there could be a considerable quantity." First real lead in the case came in December, Long recounted. He said a man attempted to sell a 1949 Cadillac to a San Francisco used car dealer for $2000. Although the registration certificate appeared genuine, the dealer became suspicious at the low asking price and called police. Under questioning, Long continued, the man who tried to sell the car acknowledged the pink slip to be false and told officers he bought two of them for $75. Information secured from this man, Long went on, led the investigators to a bar maid in the San Francisco Tenderloin who had been offering the slips for sale.
