THREE GOOD REASONS for celebrating in the Harlow home last night. The occasion not only marked St. Valentine's day but was also the observance of Charles Ahlstrom and Roger Harlow's birthdays. Joint Birthdays Observed Last Night Large red hearts mingled with birthday decorations last night when Mrs. Orman Harlow and Miss Dorothy Harlow entertained at a delightful dinner party in honor of Charles Ahlstrom and Roger Harlow who observed their joint birthdays yesterday. A pink net heart filled with red sweetpeas and camellias accented the centerpiece, and pink net rosettes were tied to red crepe paper wound around the candelabra which held white candles. Refreshments of a large heart-shaped cake with white icing and at a delightful dinner party in honor of Charles Ahlstrom and Roger Harlow who observed their joint birthdays yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Bradford Harrison of this city have returned from a fishing trip to Northern California. Serve carrots in different ways: they're good mixed with diced cooked celery and seasoned with butter or margarine, salt and freshly-ground pepper. Or shred the raw carrots and mix them with crumbled crisp-cooked bacon and mayonnaise to serve on greens for a salad or in a sandwich. A delightful luncheon party marked the third observance of the double holiday yesterday afternoon with Mrs. Rankin entertaining a group of Jackie's friends and relatives for the afternoon. Enjoying the day were Sharon and Jennie Dolan, Nancy Hall, Margaret Ann Neighbors, Donnie Loomis, Sherry Lynn Doane, J. C. Reist, Lorene and Lynn Kirkhart, cousins of the honorce; Mrs. Maxine Kirkhart, an aunt; Madge Breeden, grandmother, and Lee White, a close friend of the family. Games and opening of gifts occupied the afternoon. Potluck dinner will be held by the Cassel Sunday school class of the Calvary Baptist church, tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m., in the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Wood, 11151 Cerritos ave. Nelson, long optometrist, was notified today his appointment as member of the Resolutions Committee by Roy M. Swain of Ukiah, president of California Optometric Association. Dr. Nelson will serve in the capacity at the 46th annual convention of the state optometric group to be held in Hollywood on Feb. 22, 23, 24 and 25. Parent-Teachers information course study group meeting will be held tomorrow morning at 9 to 11:30 a.m., in the Benjamin Franklin auditorium. Mrs. Conan W. Gray and M. William B. Rickel will be leade Orange County Symphony chestra will give its first performance for the 1951 season Feb. at 8:15 p.m. in the auditorium of the Newport Harbor Union high school. Admission is free. (Gazette photo by Kreidt) Large Attendance at First P-TA Meeting Held in New Thomas Jefferson School Nearly 170 members and guests of Broadway P-TA gathered in the beautiful new Thomas Jefferson cafetorium yesterday afternoon for the annual Founders' Day meeting and tea with Mrs. Arthur Showalter presiding. Initial reading of the Thomas Jefferson by-laws occupied the brief business meeting. Final reading and adoption by members is expected to take place at the March meeting. Action is required to formally change from Broadway P-TA to Thomas Jefferson P-TA. Past presidents, honored guests of the day, were introduced by Mrs. Raymond Jordon, Founder's Day chairman, assisted by Mrs. Robert Moor. Beautiful white ship to Mrs. E. E. Blankmeyer following a tribute to the ardent P-TA worker of whom she said, "Because this mother has worked tirelessly for the betterment of the children and the school, striving at all times to keep harmonious cooperation between parents and teachers, we are happy to award her a life membership certificate." Mrs. John Wallin was chairman of the life membership committee making the selection. The blue and gold colors of the state P-TA were carried out at the tea table, appointed in silver service. A miniature tree planting group and tiny children playing beneath the sheltering branches were used as centerpieces. Mrs. M. A. Gauer and Mrs. Chester Fowler. Talk on Cancer For B-PW Meet Dr. G. W. Olson of Fullerton principal speaker at the regimental meeting of Business and Professional Women's club last night at Lum's Cafe, took as his subject, "Cancer," followed by showing of a colored film in ways in which women can detect breast cancer and how they keep close watch for symptoms this killer, which is today taking one out of seven lives. The Health and Safety committee, under the chairmanship Beulah Hineman, arranged the program. The speaker was introduced by Eva Gooden, who is associated with the county health association. A round table discussion was held following the sharing of the film. During the business session announcement was made of reciprocity meeting to be held Fullerton on Feb. 23. A nurse from the Anaheim club are planning to attend. The members also assist in the Red Cross due to start in the very near future. A new member, Mrs. Fr Trujillo, of McCoy Drugs, welcomed into the club by 47 members and guests who present. The next dinner meeting commemorate "Girl's Week" will be held on March 14, please be announced later. Each member is to bring a high school girl college student as a guest. League meeting scheduled for Monday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m., will feature an impressive film entitled "A Criminal Is Born," which deals with teenage delinquency and parental responsibility. Mr. Russ Campbell, of the county sheriff's office, will present the film, giving a short talk on the problem as it pertains to Orange county. This will be an evening meeting to accommodate the fathers, as it is a subject of vital interest to both parents. Coffee and doughnuts will be served. Final plans for this meeting were made Wednesday morning at a meeting of the Parent-Teachers League executive board in the school office, Mrs. C. W. Mauerhan, presiding. A discussion of future meetings and programs followed, with definite plans to be announced later. Enthusiastic reports of the pot luck held Jan. 19, were heard. McBratney is still chair of the blood bank to be sponsored by Mrs. Gautschy, Anaheim or Mrs. Allen at Anaheim. Members present were: Louise Martin, Callie Florence Muraoka and Rube. CHEESE ROLL 2 oz. (4 tablespoons) butter 2 oz. cream cheese (½ small package) ¼ lb. Swiss cheese, finely grated ¼ lb. Swiss cheese, diced 1½ oz. chopped nuts (pistachios or walnuts) 4 to 6 hard (oblong) rolls Cream butter, cream cheese, and grated Swiss cheese, then add diced cheese and nuts. Cut off end of the rolls and scoop out the inside. Fill shells with the mixture; wrap rolls into waxed paper and chill. When ready to serve, use a sharp knife and cut crosswise into thin slices. Instead of chopped nuts, chopped chives, chopped parsley; chopped ham may be used as a flavoring. NATIONAL RUG SHOW is the destination of these original hand-hooked rugs, the work of students in the class of Mrs. Louis Lightfoot. The interesting course is conducted at Anaheim high school. Local Adult Class in Rug Making to Exhibit Work in National Showing Creative ability, a knowledge of color and design and plain old hard work are the winning combination of factors which produced the lovely hand hooked rugs shown by Mrs. Louise Lightfoot. The work of pupils from Excellior Adult Center, Anaheim, Corona and Orange high schools, they will be exhibited by the instructor at the national rug exhibit to be held in Hollywood Masonic Temple Feb. 22, 23 and 24.
