KOREAN WAR
Continued from Page 1 of Seoul, red-held former Korean capital.
United Nations troops were massed south of Seoul, just across the Han river from the capital. But a South Korean patrol that had made another probe into Seoul was forced out again late Monday by sharp enemy smallarms fire.
Shortly before midnight Monday, reeds charged south across the ice-clogged Han river and attacked U.S. 25th Division elements in Seoul's industrial suburb, Youngdungpo. AP correspondent William C. Barnards reported from that town that the attack was beaten back in about 15 minutes.
At the same time red artillery subjected the Allies south of the Han to heavy fire from 120-mm guns, presumably Russian-made.
The critical position, however, was on the central front.
At one point on the central front, an American patrol reported Chinese who spoke English came up with white flags, shook hands as if offering to surrender, then cut loose with hand grenades.

SPORTSWEEK — Sportfishermen spend $15.5 million a year in the county according to Harly Welch. Annaheim, by the way, ought to be interested in the fact that live bait boats leave Newport every morning. Good catches of red rock cod have been reported. Three teams—Anaheim, Newport and Santa Ana—are tied for the Sunset league lead. With Ronnie Paulkner contributing 18 points, Sam Keith's Colonists upset Newport, 43-37. Bill Cook's netters took two singles matches from Jordan, to lose 7½-6½ to the Long Beach tennis team. Paul Billow and Ronald Legg were Anaheim's winners. Joe Sandoval, featherweight, and Alfonso Estrada, flyweight, were decided out of the Golden Gloves tourney. Hal Gregg took Anaheim golfing honors. He's the champ.
NITECAP — American economy can produce enough for our needs, but it could never produce enough for our years.

Workers of adults or older who have worked at least one and a half years on social security jobs since 1937 and are not working now, should contact the Santa Ana Social Security office immediately, according to Garrett W. List, local manager.
Application forms were mailed to some 525 elderly people in the Orange county area during September and October. These women and women who had called at the Long Beach office during the past few years, and were told at that time they had not worked long enough to be eligible for federal old-age insurance payments.
Anyone now 65 or over who worked and was paid as little as $50.00 in wages in each of six different calendar quarters since 1937 is insured. The minimum payment is $20 per month for the wage earner and another $10 for his wife if she is age 65.
The local office has not heard from many eligible persons to whom applications were mailed. Moreover, there are many others over-65 now have never inquired at the local office and may be eligible now to a monthly old-age insurance payment.

Pink picketing was expected when Anaheim Elba put on their minstrel show a week ago, but failed to pastorize when Los Angeles comrades were scared off by a few extra Anaheim police reserves, and a pre-show gloff in the Gazette.
Several attempts by elements running from pink to red in color have been made to stop minstrel shows in Oakland, Santa Monica, Alhambra, Long Beach, and other towns on the minstrel circuit. A pink newspaper has supplied the bulk of the hog-wash concerning minstrel shows alleged detratory effect on the Negro race.

Labor Shortage
Southern California will have to find a more effective method of utilizing its available manpower if demands of industry and business are to be met.
Thomas C. Campbell, Los Angeles manager of the California Department of Employment, today made this statement to the Southern California District of the California State Chamber of Commerce and warned of the possibilities of serious labor shortages in both defense industries and agriculture.
"Already a shortage of highly skilled and technically trained workers has developed," Campbell told the State Chamber, whose Industrial Committee will confer on manpower problems during a special session of the entire Southern California Council on Wednesday. Campbell will give a detailed report to the committee, which in turn will offer the result of its deliberations to the entire council.
In an advance statement to the organization, Campbell pointed out recruitment already has been carried on in eastern states in an attempt to meet the requirements of local industries.
Such occupations," he said, "as electronic, chemical and aeronautical engineer; radio technicians, pattern makers, machinists, tool and die makers and turret lathe operators are in particular demand."
Campbell also warned of the need for additional workers in agriculture. It is expected that a shortage of up to 15,000 workers could be anticipated during spring in September unless a supplemental labor supply is developed."
