Calif. Manpower May Get Scarce
Manpower problems in Southern California are apt to become acute in the near future according to Edward R. Valentine, regional vice-president of the California State Chamber of Commerce.
Valentine made this statement in announcing that a special meeting of the State Chamber's Southern California council will be held at the Los Angeles Biltmore hotel on Wednesday, Feb. 14, to consider manpower and similar problems.
Citing the all-time California high reached last month of 8,390,-800 wage and salary workers in non-farm employment, Valentine told council members, "This is probably only the beginning of the heavy demands industry and business will make upon the labor force of California."
"Leaders in the business, industrial and agricultural economy of Southern California" Valentine declared, "Should meet the problems of manpower mobilization before they become serious.

Mercury Ready to Open Three-Part Store at New Location Tomorrow
Mercury Stationers and Printers, owned and operated by James Auest and his wife Vera, will hold their formal opening in their new location, 228-230 E. Center st., tomorrow.
For the past week the Auests and their staff have been easy moving store fixtures and stock from the original location at 139 S. Los Angeles st., where the store was first opened Oct. 1, 1948.
Two years of operations have produced a growth sufficient to render the original quarters hopefully inadequate and the services of their single clerk equally insufficient. The new store is divided into three departments: stationery, party supplies and printing. Four full-time employees are kept busy in addition to the Auests.
The Stationery department, which the owners feel now represents one of the largest stocks in Northern Orange county offers personalized and business stationery, including the Eaton line of quality merchandise in open and boxed stock. A complete line of office supplies including every stock printed form for accounting, tabulating, as well as typewriter, adding machine and duplicating machine supplies; textile painting supplies, art and drafting supplies, filing supplies and a larger-than-ever display of greeting cards.
The party department has been set up to handle party arrangements and will deal exclusively in that line, featuring centerpieces for party rentals, favors, tallies, place cards, personalized matches and napkins, decorated candles and many other items to aid the party-giver. Expert gift wrapping will be another feature of this department.
A new Heidelberg press capable of turning out 5000 printed pieces per hour has been added to the print shop. Job printing of all kinds is accepted, with emphasis placed on personalized stationery, greeting invitations, wedding announcements and custom-designed business forms.

Students to Tour Farms on Tuesday
February 13 is the day when high school students from Orange county will find out the practical facts of farming from experts in the field.
Students from high schools in Orange county will tour actual farms from one to four o'clock in the afternoon, examining facilities and finding out the financial details of running a farm. Citrus, avocado, cattle, poultry and rabbit farms will be inspected by the group of agricultural specialists and the high school pupils.
When the students return to the Santa Ana college campus they will be given an examination concerning their knowledge of co-operative marketing, as practiced in Orange county and the nation. The highest scoring students on this examination will be given prizes and will go on to gain higher honors in further competition in regional and state contests. Co-operative men in the farming field have expressed their willingness to aid in this venture and any other individuals employed in this area are invited to attend the event.
Don Anderson of the Sunkist Co-operative Marketing association, and A. J. McFaddin, a past president of the Co-operative Marketing association, and an official of the National Farmers association will address the group.
Radioactive Heat Hits Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles is radioactively "hotter"—but not dangerously so—than it was before the recent atomic explosions near Las Vegas, Nev., 300 miles away.
A survey of Geiger counters in use in industry here showed yesterday a rise of 12 to 25 per cent in "background count."
Dr. C. C. Lauritsen, radiation authority at the California institute of Technology, said normal background counts would have to be raised hundreds of times before radioactivity could be termed dangerous.

it's living! Joe Schultz gets a 'bang' out of the game even if isn't playing for the usual side!
Sgt. Jimmy Hefron outlaw recruits ... That reminds that three Anaheimers—Rich Dunham, Salvadore Prado Eddie Bentjen—have enlisted are at Ft. Ord ... Gumecindo Azales has also joined up to do bit in his country's hour of aid.
AUTION—Mr. and Mrs. Anaimer: Please caution your singers to be careful when they're riding their bicycles. Too many kids have been hurt when they were knocked from their bikes by cars. It isn't the motorists' fault, either. In most instances it has been carelessness on the part of the youngsters—and that of course, really means the parents.
ANAHEIMITEMS — Arthur Hemmerling is an orange grower who is vitally concerned with Anaheim's future. Dr. Brockaway Roberts, they say, is saving a rough time getting over the injuries he sustained in a Man slaughter boulevard crash. A lot of Anaheimers are pulling for the good Doc ... Lloyd Verry, among his other accomplishments is a member of a draft board. He should know when a kid's number is up, but he doesn't. Del Crandall, the ballgamer, actually put off signing his baseball contract until he talked it over with draft booster, a consulting officer, ball reminds us that Bobby Ross, Bobby Adams and Jess Flores, all big leaguers, are ready.
RECOMMENDATION — If the movie is anything like the stage

play, "Harvey" is a moompitcher youghta see. Good entertainment!
DAMIT—The State Water Resources board has reduced its request for $1,500,000 for a $500,000 dam appropriation so that work on the Carbon Canyon dam in Olinda might get started this year. The entire project will cost something like $5,436,000. Incidentally the Olinda dam is one of a number of projected conservation floor control dams. Three have been built. The Prado dam was one; the Fullerton and Brea dams are the others.
NOTATIONS — Tex Middleton, t-auto dealer, relaxes by playing a strenuous game of tennis. How is that possible? Well, Bill Cook, the Elks' bandmaster, says the game keeps you trim. Cook starred when H. Elsworth Vines, C. Gene Make and Jack Tidball dominated the prep tennis picture. Randy Bell also plays a fast game of tennis. Judy LaMori and Melva Williams are two of the best in the woman's division. Lookeel! It says here that she has won outstanding architectural masters at UC. He took time out during the mid-term recess to get married.
NITECAP—Success is almost always assured when a guy marries the boss' daughter.
Marine Biologists Heard by Ikes
Marine biologists Bob Cellyer and Jim Withycombe spoke at the regular Wednesday meeting of the Izask Walton League.
Cellyer spoke on the factors which determine the availability of ocean fish and Withycombe summarized the activities of the Fish and Game Division in the planting of the Salton Sea with fish taken at San Felipe, Baja California.
Both Marine biologists are associated with the State Marine Fisheries Laboratory at Terminal Island. A question and answer session ended the talks.
Work on the La Palma school project will continue next Sunday. If plans proceed according to schedule, installation of the windows will be completed, the building painted and a general cleanup of the inside will all be accomplished. All members and interested parties are invited to don their old clothes and lend a hand.
Building should be ready for Scout use by March 1.
By a general vote of members, the regular meeting night has been changed from the first Wednesday to the first Thursday of every month. Next meeting will be Thursday, March 1 and will be at the La Palma school building.
