Copyright 1881, The LeBlanc Corporation (Adv.) This was Liberal's second bid for the international title, and the second time it has failed to top Olney. Last year, in the first competition between the two cities, Olney's Florence Callow won in one minute 10.4 seconds. Liberal's 1950 winner was Mrs. Dale Warden, who completed the distance in one minute 18 seconds, flat. Mrs. Dix was six skillet lengths ahead as she finished the 415-yard course from parish pump to church door. The race, ancient feature of Shrove Tuesday observances in Efgland, dates back to 1445. One of the rules of the contest is that the girls have to flip a baked pancake into the air three times and catch it in a skillet. All the competing women here were clad in housedresses aprons and scarves. According to the rules, dropping their pancakes did not disqualify the runners and by the time the field neared the end of the course, most of the pancakes were sadly the worse for wear. COUNTRY HAM The dark firm surface of Kentucky and Virginia style ham, due to a special curing process, must be scrubbed off with soap-suds and brushed before cooking. It should then be washed well in hot water, using a knife to scrape off any mold. Soak 12-36 hours in cold water; drain. Older hams require longer soaking, as well as more thorough soap and water scrubbings. William Shakespeare was born in April, 1564.
