For Results and Quick 7 Angheim Gazette TUESDAY, JANUARY 26, 1931 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA California Will Wait to Build Community Bomb Shelters - Warren SACRAMENTO (UP)—For the time being, Governor Warren said today, California is going to hold off on the building of community bomb shelters. He told a news conference that the parley of governors on civil defense held in Chicago last week felt that there wasn’t enough time to build such shelters. Ralph Schaiff Stricken in Car Ralph Schaiff, 54, died last evening as he was returning home from his work. His son was with him in the car when he was suddenly stricken. The Crane ambulance was called and he was brought to the Anaheim Community hospital where a doctor pronounced him dead upon arrival. He came to California 32 years ago from Arkansas, and has lived in Anaheim for 30 years. Surviving him are his wife, Viola R. Schaiff, at the family home at 12711 Trask ave., southwest of Anaheim; one daughter, Mrs. Louise Price of Garden Grove; one son, Malbern R. of Garden Grove. The idea of special community shelter may be dropped completely, he said. Millard Caldwell, federal civil defense chief, told the governors that the overall federal plan was speeded up, so that the timetable calls for effective air raid protection by July, 1952, instead of October, 1954. Shelving of the community shelter plans has the effect of postponing the time when California will have to find ways of raising about $100,000,000 as the state and local share of building the structures. Warren said he will not recommend to the legislature that money for this purpose be appropriated. He said he will wait until Congress and federal officials not only define the plan, but also provide the federal share of the KOREAN WAR Continued from Page 1 only a few hundred yards on the sixth day of their northward limited offensive. A regimental officer told Associated Press correspondent Jim Becker: "I think we've hit their main defense line." On the flank, however, gains up to six miles were recorded. An enemy division may be manning the red defense line on the western half of the 40-mile front. They’re well dug in and determined to stay." Lt. Col. Bernard Peeters of Park Falls, Wis., executive officer of a spearhead regiment, told Becker. Advance Allied units, he added, were suffering their heaviest casualties of the offensive, but these were far below the "terrific losses being inflicted on the enemy." For the second straight day Chinese artillery pounded away at U.N. positions nine miles northwest of Suwon. About 100 rounds were fired Tuesday. Seven miles northwest of Suwon American units were fired on by reds in well-hidden caves and made only a small advance. "Air and artillery is pouring in there," said Peeters, "but the Doughboys still have to go in there and dig them out one by one." Maj. Gen. Edward M. Almond, munity hospital where a doctor pronounced him dead upon arrival. He came to California 32 years ago from Arkansas, and has lived in Anaheim for 30 years. Surviving him are his wife, Viola R. Schaiff, at the family home at 12711 Trask ave., southwest of Anaheim; one daughter, Mrs. Louise Price of Garden Grove; one son, Malbern R. of Garden Grove; one brother, Connie Schaiff of Missouri; four sisters, Mrs. Eunice Heinze of Anaheim, Mrs. Elizabeth Martin of Orange, Mrs. Elon Owens of Arizona and Mrs. Syble Gasper of Chula Vista, and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted from the Hilgenfeld chapel Thursday at 2 p.m. Rev. Virgil K. Ledbetter, former pastor of the Calvary Baptist church, will officiate. Burial will be made in the Anaheim cemetery. School Board Continued from Page 1 was too close not warrant an investigation into the merits of unification costing from $500 to $1000, and the submission of the question to the people. He recommended, and the suggestion was adopted, that the boards meet separately, decide what they wanted, and let the county know their decision. Meeting after the combined assembly had adjourned the trustees unanimously voted a desire to form a Junior High School district, and almost unanimously turned down a Katella district motion to ask the county committee to cease any further investigation in the unification plan. Frank L. Bowman, chairman of the county committee, presided over the combined meeting. James A. Baker, chairman of the Anaheim Union High School District board, presided over the rump session of school district boards. John 'Branigan' of the State Division of Schoolhouse Planning appeared at the meeting to explain the pros and cons of unification. Also present was Clyde A. Watson state senator from Orange county who gave a short Rotarians Hear Own Members During Meeting Rotary club had an exceptional program yesterday noon, despite the absence of the scheduled speaker. The guest speaker was to have been a person in the television industry. He notified the club that he would be unable to make the appearance because of an unavoidable delay on his return from the north. Several Rotarians offered their services as pinch-hit speakers and the meeting was successful. Walter Taylor of the Taylor Lumber co., and George Owens, operator of the Cranford Flying Instruction field, both spoke for a few minutes on their respective trade interests. Mel Gauer, superintendent of schools, reported on the current issue of the "Rotarian," a monthly publication. Charles Young, local building contractor, followed Gauer with a report on his recent trip to Chicago. Charles Sisk, sales manager for Winckler and Smith Citrus Produce co., ended the speakers list with a resume of his travels around the U.S., in the interests of citrus by-products. Switchmen 'Sick', Hamper Freight Movement on Rails Warren said he will not recommend to the legislature that money for this purpose be appropriated. He said he will wait until Congress and federal officials not only define the plan, but also provide the federal share of the money. However, Warren went on, this will not in any way slow down the selection and designation of air raid shelters in existing buildings. Homemaker (Continued from Page 1) kinds of soup. Serve it clear as bouillon to pep up the appetite for the rest of the meal or add noodles or vegetables for more hearty fare. You may even become famous for your French onion soup! FRENCH ONION SOUP 2 tablespoons fat 3 large onions, sliced very thin 1 qt. soup stock 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Salt and pepper to taste Brown the onions in the fat and combine with the other ingredients. Serve it piping hot with grated parmesan cheese and crispy French bread. And then comes the day when you have on hand a beautiful bone from a ham. That calls for soup made with split peas, navy beans or lentils. SPLIT PEA SOUP 2 cups split peas 3 qts. water ½ cup chopped onions 1 cup chopped celery (leaves and all) ½ cup grated carrots Soak the peas over night in enough water to cover them to a depth of two or three inches. Put the peas, water and all into a soup kettle and add enough water and left-over vegetable juices to make about three quarts. Cover the kettle tightly and simmer gently for three hours. Add the Switchmen 'Sick', Hamper Freight Movement on Rails By The Associated Press Railroad switchmen reported sick today on at least six railroads in the Chicago and Detroit areas, hampering movement of vital freight. A spokesman for the Army, which is running the railroads, said freight traffic in the Chicago area is "definitely hampered" and that "the situation is building up rapidly." The spokesman, who declined use of his name, said about 80 per cent of the switchmen failed to report at the Santa Fe railroad in Chicago, and about 90 per cent at the Bolt Railway company of Chicago. The small Chicago and Illinois Western railroad was 100 per cent affected, he said. He added that the walkout had spread to the Baltimore and Ohio railroad in Chicago, with an estimated 20 per cent of the switchmen staying home. Railroads affected in Detroit were the Chesapeake and Ohio and the Wabash. A C & O spokesman said 53 of 89 switchmen in the Detroit area failed to show up on the early shifts, and that freight service there was "pretty well tied up." Passenger service apparently was not affected immediately. Quick Action Always Use Gaze LEGAL NOTICES Ouk.
