54 Called, Seven Leave Games As Colonists Drop to Third
Starting almost immediately, the Anaheim Cubs now commence playing solely for the fun of it.
Any chance that they might have had of walking with the Sunset league crown was booted squarely out of Anaheim gymnasium door yesterday afternoon when Colonists blew in a 56-45 decision to a Santa Ana team was superior only in determination.
It was one of the whistle-tootiest games ever seen hereabouts, and it had to be as both teams went quickly to the task of taking the other apart at the joints. Seven men—four from Anaheim and three from Santa Ana—waved off the floor with five fouls. All told, a total of 54 personalities were tooted against the two teams.
Bennett Clean
Through it all shone the angelic figure of Saint guard Bill Bennett who played the entire 32 minutes without once incurring the disapproval of an official. Bennett scored 12 points to share the leadership of the Saints in that department with forward Rex Babcock.
For the Colonists, it was a sad exhibition for a team that won its first 14 games this year—a team, incidentally, that has been able to win only two of its last six. They were behind from the start.

SAN FRANCISCO (P) — Old Joe Louis, shorn of his heavy-weight title and admittedly "over the hill," is still the biggest boxing attraction in those parts.
Louis meets Andy Walker of San Francisco, holder of the California state title in a 10-rounder at Civic auditorium Feb. 23.
Tickets haven't been printed yet and won't be on sale until Feb. 1. Nevertheless, Promoter Jimmy Murray said he has $8000 in orders.
"Most of the 1700 ringside seat section has been sold out already," he said. "I predict the show will be a sellout. We will accommodate about 9000 fans and receipts should scale over $40,000. They all want to see Joe Louis in his latest comeback fight."
Tickets are priced from $7.50 down.
During the 1950 National League season Cincinnati struck out the fewest times, 497.

ELECTRONIC WHEEL BALANCING
For the Colonists, it was a sad exhibition for a team that won its first 14 games this year—a team, incidentally, that has been able to win only two of its last six. They were behind from the start, rallying only once to open the second half when Sheldon Welch closed the gap to two points.
Welch Hits
Welch, however, proved to be the only Colonist to be able to hit with any consistency. Ron Faulkner made four baskets from close in, but the rest of the team simply couldn't find it. The forward Jim Webber and Jim Ball hit only one long shot between them and Webber added a single drive in for his contribution before he left before the end of the first half.
Actually, this would have been a satisfactory offensive showing had not the Colonists proved so inept on defense Using a man-for-man, they simply failed to keep tight rein on their assignments, frequently letting a man loose for an easy lay-in.
Babcock Held
Once again, Welch was the leader here. Handed the assignment of watching Babcock, one of the loop's leading scorers, the Grape limited him to two baskets from the floor. Babcock added another with Dennis Denny watching him and made the rest of his points on free tosses—none of them coming on fouls inflicted by Welch.
It was a hectic one from the start. Both teams made their first two points from the free throw line and before three and one-half minutes were gone. guard Dick Cruze already had four fouls. He was promptly pulled out of the game, but he did come back later to play almost all of the third quarter before fouling again.
Each team could make but two field goals in the opening period. Monte Davis making both for the Saints and Webber and Faulkner counting for Anaheim. But the Saints dropped seven free throws to four to take an 11-8 quarter lead.

Saints Roll
Then panic struck at the Colonists as the Saints rattled off 10 straight points before Welch could hit the basket after four and one-half minutes of play in the second period. It was 21-8 when he started firing, and he hit three straight to bring it to 21-14. Anaheim was able to pick up two more points before they left with a halftime deficit of 26-21.
It was expensive, however, as Webber was nailed for his fifth foul with only five seconds left in the period.
Welch's two baskets, two free throws by Denny, and a bucket by Ball quickly whittled at the lead to make it 29-31 to start the third quarter, but it turned out to be a dying man's gasp.
Babcock put a basket and two was promptly pulled out of the game, but he did come back later to play almost all of the third quarter before fouling again.

'Use Golden Rule,' Says Coach, Then NC State Swamps Foe 114-66
NEW YORK (AP) — When he isn't preaching the "Golden Rule" Coach Everett Case is applying the "Iron Rod."
Before his North Carolina State basketball five took the floor against Virginia Tech last night, Case admonished the 8000 spectators present to follow the Golden Rule in their behavior.
"Do unto others as we would have them do unto us." Case quoted.
Then his N.C. State athletes proceeded to swamp an outclassed Virginia Tech team, 114-66. Case couldn't hold the score down and the Wolfpack set two Southern conference scoring marks.
Sam Banzino poured through 47 points to better the record of 45 set by George Glamack of North Carolina in 1941. The team total of 114 topped N.C. State's previous mark of 103 set earlier this season against Furman.
N.C. State (18-2) ranked eighth nationally in this week's Associated Press poll, has a 9-0 mark in the conference.
Lawrence Tech, nearly buried among its better known Big Ten neighbors, kept alive one of the few remaining winning streaks. The Detroit school edged by DePaul, 65-63, for No. 12.
Lanky Dave Kardokus dropped in a free throw in the last three seconds to give Vanderbilt a 58-57 victory over Tennessee. The victors now have a 7-0 mark at the top of the Southeastern conference standings.

BY AL LOPEZ
CLEVELAND (P)-As is only natural since this is my debut as a major league manager—I am a little handicapped as far as appraising the Cleveland Indians is concerned.
Not being in the American League these past three years, since my playing days with the Indians, I haven't had a chance to watch many of the newer players and so will have to wait until spring training before I can judge our own club, let alone the others.
I do know that Boston is improved by the addition of those two pitchers from Chicago (Bill Wight and Ray Scarborough), but the New York Yankees are still world champions, and as such, are the club to beat.
I understand that the Indians of 1950 were a pretty good club until injuries and a defensive slump caught up with them in late August. I've seen Al Rosen (third baseman) play in the American Association and know he is the kind of an aggressive ball player that I like. I've also seen Ray Boone in spring training and believe he'll settle down and be a real good shortstop this year. Reports on Bob Avila (second baseman) and Luke Easter (first baseman) are encouraging although I haven't seen them play.
Lary Doby, of course, is a great ball player and should be even better in 1951. Then we have Dale Mitchell, Allie Clark, Bob Kennedy and a rookie named Harry Simpson for the rest of our outfield. They tell me Simpson has the natural ability and is ready for the majors so I am also anxious to see him. He led the Pacific Coast League in RBPs and hit over 30 homers so lie must have good power.
We shouldn't have any worries behind the plate with Jim Hegan, Birdie Tebbetts, Ray Murray and a couple of promising youngsters to choose from. Personally, I hope Hegan won't have to work so hard this summer with Tebbetts around. It gets pretty tough in hot weather and he should profit by a little relief.
Our pitching, of course, is the best in the league. Most of our hurlers were here in 1947 so I know them fairly well, particularly Bob Lemon, Bob Feller, Early Wynn and Steve Gromek. Mike Garcia is new to me but his record certainly indicates he has it.
Then there is Sam Zoldak, who might make a good relief man and a kid named Dick Rozek, who is very fast and might help a lot this summer.
As far as the military draft is concerned, we've already lost four players and don't figure to lose more unless the regulations are changed. All of our men are either veterans or were drawn on physical grounds in the war. That is, all but two youngsters who will be reelected to the Indians for the first this spring.
Our main weakness seems a lack of reserve strength particularly in the infield. Weed Lou Klein (formerly Cards) and he might be the answer at second and short we're still looking for a utility man. Then, like everyone else, we need a relief pitcher. But we'll also at a couple new boys this year who did quite a bit of fine for their minor league last season.
All in all, I'll say the Irish will have a real contender in The young fellows in the lineup will be more experienced and prone to make mistakes. We look for a lot of help from kids. Tebbetts should strengthen us behind the plate. If we find a steady reliefer and pin against injury with a little reserve strength, we'll be up the top.

Two Good Quarters Enough For Fourth Bee Win, 57-36
There was nothing odd about the Colonist Bees yesterday.
After going on diets during the "odd" periods, they broke out with scoring binges in the second and fourth quarters to run away from Santa Ana, 57-36, for their fourth straight Sunset league win of the year.
It still left them all alone on top of the standings, and they have a chance to make a clean sweep of the first round when they face Orange on Friday night.
Starts Subs
Coach Bill Hunstock started a predominantly sub lineup, but it failed to produce more than a narrow 7-4 first quarter edge. A few of the regulars managed to increase it to 25-11 at the half. The Saints made a slight dent in this margin to trail at the three-quarter mark, 35-24, but the Colonists began to pour it on in the final session to win in a walk.
Ronnie Bevins, the Colonist's "14-point man" was "held" to 13 yesterday, but he still managed to wind up in his familiar spot as top man in the Anaheim scoring column. Much of the inability of the Colonist's to score in the first three quarters, however, may be traced to Bevins' failure to find the basket. Of his 13, he made seven in a four-minute session of the fourth quarter.

Meade to Appeal To NASRC Board
MIAMI BEACH (UP)—The controversial Don Meade case was due for consideration at the National Association of State Racing Commissioners' convention today.
Meade, one the nation's top jockeys a few years ago, seeks to win back his license which was suspended in 1945 by the Mexican commission following a run-in with a steward.
The Florida commission granted Meade a probationary license last Dec. 10 over objections of Chairman Leo Edwards, who on Monday was elevated to the presidency of the national group.
A storm of protest arose over the Florida commission action and Meade withdrew his application. Meade then announced he would appear before the national convention and ask reinstatement to the sport "which is my whole life."
Spencer J. Drayton, executive secretary of the Thoroughbred racing association, warned commissioners that Congress probably would attempt to place a federal tax on pari-mutuel betting.
Make a Try
Both teams were even at the start, 2-2, and again at 4-4, but Augie Huesca's free throw sent Anaheim ahead to stay. When Hubstock put in his regular five, it quickly became unclose, the Colonists ratling away to a 19-7 edge.
The Saintlets made a gallant bid to open the third period, plunging in six points before Anaheim could score. That narrowed it to 25-17, but it was the best that they could do for the rest of the day. Huesca and Bevins hit baskets, but the Saints came right back with a pair.
Open It Up
Bill Ames then came in with one and Dave Olivas added a quick pair to make it 35-24 at the quarter. But the Saints, with still a faint chance to catch up, blew it in the finale.
