2 Anaheim Gazette FRIDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1950 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA BEYERLINES by Ernie Beyer Having seen all or most of them in action, this ink-smeared lackey now steps forth to venture some predictions on the three local basketball races that will begin next month. Shall we proceed? Do. Let us first consider the matter closest at hand—the Sunset league. These teams are grouped this way: Probable winner — Anaheim or Newport Harbor; Contender — Hunting Beach; Outside chance — Fullerton; Also playing games—Orange and Santa Ana. Anaheim, by BEYER piling up a dozen straight wins, has certainly earned the right to be eyed as the "team to beat this year." They have height, shooting ability, and savvy, and are well coached. Newport is the only team in the league that can contest the height of Anaheim, and they have one of the loop's top players in forward Armond Nettles. The Colonists barely won in their only meeting and the remaining two should be dillies. Huntington Beach has a young untested team and could Chaffey jaysee tournament, but that was on the Chaffey floor. Both teams are filthy with material and their games against each other should decide the title. Fullerton has been like the little girl — when the Hornets have been good, they've been very, very good, but when they've been bad, they've really stunk up the place. They'll have to be good all the time to repeat as EC champs this year. Mt. SAC appears to be the best of the remaining teams, although Orange Coast could move up if anyone at all is found to give some assistance to Bob Yardley. And the Orange league—Probable winner:—Tustin; Contender—None; Outside chance—Laguna and Valencia; Also playing games—Garden Grove, Brea, and Capistrano. Tustin, as indicated, is in a class by itself in this league. It has beaten many of the larger teams of the county and demonstrated its class by going to the finals in the recent Huntington Beach tournament. Actually, all of the remaining schools should be lumped together, but since Laguna and Valencia have looked slightly stronger this year a concession is made for them. While the predicting mood is Huntington Beach has a young untested team and could surprise if it "gets hot." Fullerton is rated as an outsider because little is known about it. It was very weak in the games played this year, but most of its personnel was still missing at that time because of the drawn-out football schedule this year at Fullerton. On to the Eastern conference. Probable winner—San Bernardino or Chaffey; Contender — Fullerton; Outside chance — Orange Coast, Mt. San Antonio and Riverside; Also playing games—Santa Ana. Chaffey whipped the Indians by two points in the finals of the stable of Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloane has won $646,224 this year, and the Calumet horses have earned $838,330 for the late wealthy owner Warren Wright. Today's feature purse, slated to be run off before an opening day throng of more than 25,000 fans, is small change compared to the purses awaiting the horsemen during the remainder of Santa Anita's 14th season. Stakes aggregating $750,000 are on tap from now until the season ends with the $50,000 San Juan Capistrano handicap March 10. Calumet Fires Two Barrels in Effort. To Cop Money Winning Title for 1950 ARCADIA (AP)—The fabulous Calumet racing stable throws a double barreled shot at the nation's money winning title for 1950 today when Santa Anita opens its gates for its 50-day winter meeting. Trainer Jimmy Jones named Wistful and Bewitch to race in the $15,000 Anita Chiquita purse, and victory will send the Calumets ahead in the annual race for the money winning title among the owners. As of today, the Brookmeade stable of Mrs. Baer Resigns Detroit Post DETROIT (AP) — Charles B. (Chuck) Baer has resigned as head football coach at University of Detroit. Baer, who has held the post for six seasons, ascribed his surprising resignation last night to "personal reasons." His contract was due to run out Feb. 28. A usually well-informed source said Baer was negotiating for a Southwestern college coaching job. Baer's 1950 team had a fairly successful season with six wins three losses and a tie. His 1949 team won the Missouri Valley conference crown. EASTER IN NEW JOB NEW YORK (AP) — Big Luky Easter, Cleveland's rookie first baseman who hit 28 homers and drove in 107 runs last season, had a new job. Luke, who batted .280 for the Indians, has been signed by Promoter Abe Saperstein as traveling secretary and official greeter for the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team. It was Saperstein who signed Easter to an Indian contract. HAPPY NEW YEAR 1951 OPEN SUNDAY and MONDAY ALL DAY NEW YEAR SPECIALS! Rose officials, gleeful that the weatherman has predicted good weather for the Michigan-California football game New Year's Day, expected several thousand to sit in on today's box lunch gabfest. Generally, the kickoff affair is held in Pasadena's mammoth Civic auditorium, sponsored by the Kiwanis club here, but the thing attracted so many people it was decided to throw it in the big bowl itself this year. Listed as star orators of the day, of course, were the rival coaches, Lynn Waldorf of California and Bennie Oosterbaan of the invading Wolverines. Numerous other sports celebrities are on the honored guest list but the real stars of the Rose Bowl show, the players, won't be on hand. California's Golden Bears, champions of the Pacific Coast conference, are still hard at work at nearby San Bernardino and Michigan's title winners from the Big Ten remain in semi-conclusion here. Oosterbaan continues to keep the gates barred to Western football writers at the Wolverine practices, permitting the Mid-Western delegation in, while Waldorf takes a counter view. "Never in my 26 years in football have I ever closed a practice, or any part of a practice, to football writers and I don't see any reason for starting it now," said Waldorf. Michigan's backers got a scare yesterday when the star tailback, Chuck Ortmann, came up with a stiff shoulder and neck muscle. But soon the ailing muscles responded to treatment and Ortmann appeared hale and hearty. Both East, West Ready to Score In Shrine Game SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—College football's great contribution to the welfare of crippled children—the Shrine East-West classic—is primed for what may be its most spectacular show. The 26th of these famed intersectional games, which annually provide more than $100,000 for the Shrine charity, brings together tomorrow two all-star teams that really are loaded. The East, with name players such as Michigan State's Everett Grandelius, Purdue's John Kerestes, Navy's Bill Powers and many another of that caliber, is favored by six points. But many fans look at the West's Kyle Rote and a flock of other dangerous backs and say this game is a toss-up if one ever was. "We'll give them a ball game," said Rote, hard-hitting Southern Methodist back, who can do everything well. The 62,000 fans who will jam-pack Kezar stadium were promised dry, crisp, 50-degree weather. To West Coaches Jess Neely (Rice), Marchie Schwartz (Stanford) and Howie Odell (Washington) the forecast was welcome news; they probably will try to pass the East dizzy. And with passers like quarterback on the Long Beach or will they repeat the same suit that they followed Santa Barbara series by sad in the first game and romping in the return match. Compton Tourney After tonight the Colonii have only one more scheduled game left before open conference play here 12 against Huntington Beaver they return next year will play in the Compton ment, opening on Wednesday against Long Beach Will lone contest with Pomoran then stand between the C and Huntington Beach. Anaheim's Bees also boo for the year tonight, hoping hance their 11-2 record—and should do it if form prevail dan hardly had a handhold ing to the Colonists here by 31 count on Wednesday, t making favorite and un roles fairly well establish tonight. To West Coaches Jess Neely (Rice), Marchie Schwartz (Stanford) and Howie Odell (Washington) the forecast was welcome news; they probably will try to pass the East dizzy. And with passers like quarterbacks Bill Weeks of Iowa State and Fran Nagle of Nebraska and Rote they might do just that. The West's two starting half-backs, Wilford "Whizzer" White of Arizona State and Brad Rowland of McMurry College (Texas) are dangerous ball carriers. White was good for 1502 yards this season, averaging 7.55 yards every time he packed the ball. But it isn't going to be easy running through that big East line pivoted on center Jerry Groom of Notre Dame. One observer, a pro-footballer, commented: “This kid can write his own ticket if he wants to turn pro... He blocks out guards as if he owns them.” East Coaches Bernie Bierman, Tuss McLaughry and Andy Kerr haven't been talking much but they have the players to really go to town. Grandellus, an All-America, is only one of several capable of running up a score. GOOD OMEN EAST LANSING (AP)—Michigan State's swimming coach Charles McCaffree, Jr., hopes that the good "omen" for the 1951 Spartan tank team will be Al Omans, a powerful breast-stroker. Colonists Seek 13th Straight Victory in 1950 Finale with Long Beach Jordan Minus most of the frills that accompany it—paper streamers, cellophane hats, and jugs of champagne—New Year's eve will be attempted to be celebrated two days early tonight by Anaheim's Colonists when they face Long Beach Jordan in the 1950 finale. More than just a bowing out for Anaheim, it will also give them a chance to retire unfeated in this portion of their schedule. A win tonight would give them 13 in a row for their sports. Slight Edge For this year-end tussle, the colonists will probably be rated right favorites over the Panthers. Much of this will stem from the fact that the Anaheimers won Wednesday night's game here from Jordan by a 47-36 count. It was undoubtedly the tough trial of the year that the Colonists underwent for the first three quarters before they downed the pesky Panthers on Wednesday. The question is thus put squarely before the Colonists tonight—will they fold up against Jordan on the Long Beach floor, will they repeat the same circuit that they followed in the Santa Barbara series by looking in the first game and then jumping in the return match? Compton Tourney After tonight the Colonists will have only one more regularly scheduled game left before they then conference play here on Jan. against Huntington Beach. After they return next year, they After tonight the Colonists will have only one more regularly scheduled game left before they then conference play here on Jan. against Huntington Beach. After they return next year, they will play in the Compton tournament, opening on Wednesday against Long Beach Wilson. A contest with Pomona will stand between the Colonists and Huntington Beach. Anaheim's Bees also bow out of the year tonight, hoping to enforce their 11-2 record—and they would do it if form prevails. Joran hardly had a handhold in fall to the Colonists here by a 67-count on Wednesday, thereby taking favorite and underdog ties fairly well established for night.
