Local Guardsmen Conduct Special Christmas Party
CAMP COOKE — Anaheim's own Company K of the 224th Regiment had an extra special Christmas celebration when last Tuesday evening became Anaheim night in the 40th Division. Money for the Christmas party came from a special fund donated by the people of Anaheim.
Beginning with the tops in a buffet dinner, the Santa shin-dig was livened by the presence of more than 100 girls from nearby towns who lent the feminine touch to the party.
Ret. James L. Appell of 6268 Del Valle dr., Los Angeles, worked closely with other Company K men to produce the biggest and best Christmas party this side of the Rockies. Other recruits from far away places were able to enjoy the Christmas spirit, and forgot that they were so far from home.
The 224th Regimental Band provided the music and members of the Company provided the entertainment for a distinguished audience which included Colonel J. L. Richardson, Jr., Commanding Officer of the 224th, and Mayor Charles Pearson of Anaheim.
Company K has already used some of the funds given by Anaheim, to brighten the spirits of its GI's with phonograph records, books, a public address system, and a photo lab for the camera.

Pork Chops May Be Braised in Oven, Too
In a covered frying-pan or in a casserole, versatile pork chops may be cooked either way. However, whether cooked on the range or in the oven, pork chops are prepared by the same method—by braising, according to home economist Reba Staggs.
And whether cooking chops over a sweet potato and apple combination casserole, apple dressing or over scalloped corn or potatoes, they are first browned slowly in a frying-pan. Next, the chops are arranged over the casserole, the cover of the utensil closely fitted and the dish cooked in a 350 degree oven.
The correct top-of-range method is an identical procedure. When the chops are browned, the utensil is tightly covered so the chops can cook in moist heat for 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending upon their thickness.
As well as various cookery possibilities, there are various chops from which to choose. There are the popular center cut loin chops which many homemakers are sure to purchase. But according to Miss Staggs, for equally as flavorsome a choice as the center chops, homemakers may choose rib chops or the shoulder arm and blade slices which are actually steaks. These are all prepared by the braising method and may be used interchangeably for range top or oven cooking.

Vishinsky Snubs British Newsmen
PLYMOUTH, England (JP) — Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Y. Vishinsky arrived here today on the French liner Liberte on route home from the United Nations Assembly meeting in New York.
Neither Vishinsky nor members of his party of 14 would talk to reporters during the vessel's one-hour stop here.
A guard with a revolver bulging from one pocket guarded Vishinsky's luxury suite. He replied "da"—Russian for "yes"—when asked whether the foreign minister was asleep.
Other passengers among the 715 on board said Vishinsky kept to his suite for most of the Atlantic crossing. He did come out, however, for a movie in the ship's theater, a game of cards in the smoking room and a cocktail party given by the ship's captain.
In each case Vishinsky was accompanied by four bodyguards.

Camels to Grace Riverside Fair
INDIO—Wise men on camels weren't traveling over the desert here this Christmas as they did in the Holy Land 1950 years ago but, in less than two months from now, wise men may travel to Indio to see the camels.
A caravan of these desert animals will be one of the feature attractions at the 1951 Riverside county Fair and National Date Festival scheduled for the county fairgrounds here, Feb. 16-22, inclusive.
This week the Riverside county board of supervisors approved a contract for rental of the camels from the World Jungle Compound at Thousand Oaks, according to Manager Bob Fullenwider.
The Bactrian beasts, which have appeared in many Hollywood film productions, will be featured in the sensational camel races staged each afternoon during the final six days of the fair and will at other times be quartered about the colorful fairgrounds for benefit of camera fans.

Christmas is a time when people express their feelings of goodwill toward each other. A corporation has feelings, too. Because it is people—just people.
In the oil business, it takes a lot of people working together as a team, to do all the jobs necessary to find oil, refine it into useful products, and deliver it where it's needed.
This Christmas season, for example, will find men and women of Standard Oil Company of California working in many different places...all over the world. They'll be exploring for oil in wilderness areas...riding tankers in rolling seas...keeping watch on desert pipelines. You'll find them, also, working in refineries, in offices, in our research laboratories.
And all through the year, the people of Standard everywhere work at the big job of helping provide you and our nation with the oil we must have to remain strong. It's the best way all of us know of saying "Merry Christmas" 365 days a year.
