Mrs. Held is one of Anaheim's clever young homemakers. The mother of three little ones, she has planned her new home with the needs of her family very definitely in mind. The childrens' rooms have corner windows to permit ample wall space for furniture arrangement, the closets are numerous and spacious, and the floor plan is designed to keep housekeeping steps at a minimum. Mrs. Held, tall and most attractive, persuaded the builders to install her kitchen sink and surrounding counters at the height most convenient for her 39 inches from the floor. Working surface of proper height for the person who is to use it eliminates fatigue—an important point often overlooked by home builders. Now about those refreshments; they were unusual because of their simplicity and so in keeping with this pre-Christmas season that I perched on one of Mrs. Held's kitchen stools and jotted down the details. A day or two in advance, Mrs. Held baked three different kinds of rich and heavily fruited quick bread. Kept tightly wrapped in waxed paper or aluminum foil, they became moist and spicy upon standing a bit. Just before the party, Mrs. Held sliced the bread into thin slices and sored them with butter or cream cheese for delightful sandwiches which she served with large cups of steaming coffee. HARRIET HELD'S NUT BREAD 2 cups flour 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1¼ cup milk 3 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 egg 2 tablespoons melted fat 1 cup nuts 1 cup dates or raisins Mix and sift dry ingredients. Peat eggs and add milk. Stir the eggs and milk into the dry ingredients. Add nuts, dates and fat. Let stand one-half hour in a warm place to raise. Bake in a moderate oven for one hour. ORANGE NUT BREAD 1 medium sized orange 1 cup chopped dates 2 tablespoons melted shortening 1 teaspoon vanilla (Continued on Page 6) QR STORE ANAHEIM'S OWN CHOOSE Gift Hosiery America's Finest Lines!
