2 Anaheim Gazette FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1950 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Army, Sooner Win Streaks Once Again Placed on Line NEW YORK (AP)—Oklahoma and Army, ranked as the nation’s two top college football teams, lay their unbeaten streaks on the line again tomorrow. Oklahoma, seeking its 31st straight victory, tangles with its arch rival, Oklahoma A&M, before 40,000 at Stillwater, Okla. Army, seeking to extend its unbeaten string to 29 straight, meets Navy in the annual service classic before 100,-000 at Philadelphia’s Municipal stadium. Sparse Program These two games highlight a spare national program that includes such traditional tilts as the Tennessee-Vanderbilt fray at Memphis and the Notre Dame-Southern California clash at Los Angeles. The Maimi (Fla.), vs. Missouri game tonight at Miami starts off the weekend activities following Texas’ 17-0 victory over the Texas Aggies yesterday. Oklahoma, already tapped for the Sugar Bowl, and Army, which prefers not to play post-season games, are heavy favorites. But Sooner Coach Bud Wilkinson and Earl Blaik of West Point are taking nothing for granted. Right now both would probably settle for one-point victories. Eye All-Time Mark A. victory for Oklahoma over the Aggies, followed by a Sugar Bowl triumph over Kentucky. BEYERLINES by Ernie Bryan Memo to AUHS Principal Paul Demaree who commented at last night’s football banquet, “I still don’t see why they call him (Sanders) ‘Red.’ His hair looks just about the same color as mine.” The truth is that the grey-thatched UCLA mentor never has had red hair. The nickname apparently comes from a sweater of obvious hue that Sanders was fond of wearing in his youth. Est-ce que c’est OK? But Sooner Coach Bud Wilkinson and Earl Blaik of West Point are taking nothing for granted. Right now both would probably settle for one-point victories. Eye All-Time Mark A victory for Oklahoma over the Aggies, followed by a Sugar Bowl triumph over Kentucky, would give the Sooners 32 straight, within hailing distance of the all-time streak of 34 set by Pennsylvania back in the gas-light era of the 1890's. Tennessee won 35 straight regular season games back in the 1930's, but lost two post-season games. Nothing would delight the Aggies better than to shatter the Sooners' streak. That goes double for Navy against Army. Under similar circumstances two years ago the underdog Midshipmen tied the Cadets, 21-21, and five years ago dropped a 21-18 thriller. As a rule past records mean nothing in an Army-Navy struggle. BEYER Sanders spoke very briefly at last night's gathering, relinquishing most of the time to the matter of dishing out monogram awards to the lettermen on this year's teams. He did, however, express the opinion that the utmost quality to be desired in a football player is the desire to play. He linked it to his own team. "We exceeded expectations," he said. "Some players came through whom we were not counting upon. The notable one was Ted Narsheim who wasn't even eligible to come out to spring practice this year. We weren't planning on him at all, but I don't know what we would have done without him at the end of the year and now it's going to be hard to get him out of there." Sanders made no secret of the fact that he would like to entice some football players Westwoodward on his current speaking tour. "We had the smallest freshman team in the country," he joshed, but it might have been no joke. The roster numbered 23 this year. "We didn't have anyone from Anaheim this year," Sanders said, "and I guess the closest thing to it is Santa Ana's Donn Moomaw. Of him, all I can say is that I wish I had more of the same. I would say he's as good a sophomore as I've ever seen and he's going to get better." Sanders, who did most of his coaching in the free-proselyting South, took a passing shot at the PCC's "Purity Code." "The code is ridiculous. There are many clauses, but about the only one I really remember is that a boy must seek out the coach. So all that I do is wait in my office for the mail. Two weeks before the open game of the year, a rumor got out into print that Carmichael was ineligible for PCC competition because of a tryout with Los Angeles Rams during his rine hitch. I know, for example, that there are several seniors here in Anaheim and I haven’t received any letters from them yet.” Ever since UCLA’s resounding 39-0 thrashing of SC last week, Sanders has become one of the most popular of the grid banquet speakers, and he’s currently working at a two-per-day clip. “I’ll admit I’m trying to round up some boys,” he said. “This year I’ve made more speeches in California than anyone except Jimmy Roosevelt and Helen Gahagan Douglas. The talented Santa Anan is by far Troy's leading ground gainer and has averaged better than five yards per carry this year. Maxwell Stiles of the Los Angeles Daily Mirror called Carmichael "the best back on the Pacific Coast." And he wondered out loud about just why Hoagy's talents weren't being used. Following all those wails, Cravath installed his soph whiz in the starting left halfback position, moving veteran Johnny Williams to safety. The moans didn't bring about the switch, but rather the steady improvement of Carmichael as a ball-packer. The man who said "They hit harder in this league" started to hit with more force himself. Gradually, he's come along until, now at the close of the season, Al Carmichael is a tough customer to stop. The Tally Sheet Example of this is last week's UCLA slaughter in which the Trojans suffered their worst PCC loss, 39-0. Carmichael's total-yards-gained figure looked mighty slim at 31. That is, until you glance at the rushing statistics for the remainder of the backs. They totaled a healthy minus one. Groom and halfback Billy Gay are both on the injured list and may join Coach Frank Leahy among the non-participants. SC, Irish Clash in Finale LOS ANGELES (P)—The well trampled Trojans of Southern California and Notre Dame's embarrassed Irish come to the end of a melancholy fall tomorrow. They meet on the gridiron for the 22nd time, and if fair weather prevails, some 65,000 of the more faithful followers of their current fortunes will assemble in Memorial Coliseum for the game. It's been a long and interesting series and in hand tomorrow will be a scattering of fans who saw it start back in 1928 in the days of the late Knute Rockne and Howard Jones. The encounter this time, however, is blessed with more past prestige than prevailing glory, and some have even earned it the most unimportant finale of the nation's 1950 grid wars. Notre Dame, its great undeniable streak of 39 games broken by Purdue early last October, its bright Green then forehead to bow to Indiana and Michigan State, and even curtsure in a tie with Iowa could use a win over the Trojans to end the season. The Trojans could use anything. The record shows but one triumph in eight games, over a weak Oregon eleven. And just seven days ago they watched themselves — which is about as good a way as any to say it—get drubbed by UCLA, 39-0. It was their worst display since Michigan taught them a 49-0 lesson in the 1948 Rose Bowl game. The sad past does not mean a dull game; however, it could be a good one. Frank Leahy, boss of the Irish, is not adverse to belaboring the Trojans, quite soundly if possible, and it appears he has the weapons to do it with such men as Bobby Williams, Bill Gay, Jack Landry, Bill Barrett, and John Pelbom operating in the backfield. The Projan coach, Jeff Cravath is badly in need of a win. His alumni are grousing loudly about the defeats to California UCLA and the others. The toll putting might subside considerably should beat Notre Dame or Boston. We are in the worst physical shape of the season. Cravath reported, and apparently he can produce evidence to prove his pessimism. Leahy, who convulsed grid circles early this fall with the deadpan observation that Notre Dame just "doesn't have the folks this year," may have limited use for a couple of the folks tomorrow. That is, if his 60-minute center, Capt. Jerry Groom and halfback Bill Gay are as racked up as reported. DON'T Get Caught Twice!!
