Utah Scientists Proffer New Concept In Medical Battle Against Disease
SALT LAKE CITY (AP)—A new concept of disease was described at the college of medicine of the University of Utah today.
Some dramatic experiments show disease to be a battle between the body's connective tissues and germs or other causes of illness.
State Governing Costs Boosted by Building Boom
SACRAMENTO (AP)—Post-war building pushed California’s state government costs over the billion dollar mark in the 1949-50 budget year.
State Controller Thomas H. Kuchel reported the total today as $1,049,993,161.
Part of that figure is an estimate. Kuchel figures $14,000,000 will be needed to pay bills which were not filed with his office before last June 30.
The 1949-50 cost is about $183,000,000 more than 1948-49. And 25 years ago, Kuchel added, governmental costs amounted to $73,796,621. The state had a population of 4,750,000 then compared with better than 10,500,000 now.
The 1949-50 state revenues totalled $839,172,144—about $51,500,000 more than the previous year.

In this new concept, connective tissues even take part in healing cuts and bruises.
Connective tissue is the largest single material forming our bodies. Without it we would be jelly. This tissue takes many forms, from ligaments, membranes and the walls of blood vessels to the binding threads in fat, muscle and bone. Only hair and nails contain no connective tissue.
The experiments were done by Dr. T. F. Dougherty, professor of anatomy. He stopped inflammation of all sorts by giving extra amounts of the hormone cortisone. Cuts failed to swell or inflame. Redness of hives disappeared. Inflammation due to allergies disappeared.
This stopping of inflammation, Dr. Dougherty said, is not necessarily a good thing, and in fact may be very bad. He used large amounts of hormone to find out what was going on. Inflammation, he explained, is the body's first reaction to protect itself. Red and swollen tissues are the sign that white blood cells have rushed to the sites of trouble to phagocytize, or swallow, the germs and other rains caused business to pick for the Walker Brothers—of Anaheim and Delbert of Lerton. Most of the difference between income and outgo was made up by the use of $172,000,000 from post-war reserve funds. This money was used for public works and bond interest.
Nearly half the money spent was in the form of grants to local governments. These allocations accounted for $492,445,355. State operations cost $331,116,637, and capital outlay $227,040,473.
The local grants were split up like this:
Education $238,249,296.
Shared revenues $131,792,746.
Social welfare and public health grants: $91,309,971.
Public works $31,279,279.

This stopping of inflammation, Dr. Dougherty said, is not necessarily a good thing, and in fact may be very bad. He used large amounts of hormone to find out what was going on. Inflammation, he explained, is the body's first reaction to protect itself. Red and swollen tissues are the sign that white blood cells have rushed to the sites of trouble to phagocytize, or swallow, the germs and other substances causing trouble. This swelling is caused by the connective tissues. Cortisone stops the inflammation by acting directly on connective tissues.
The important discovery is this fact of direct action by cortisone on connective tissues. That changes the picture of body defense. It has been supposed that cortisone directly attacked the causes of the diseases for which this hormone is a remedy. But under the new concept cortisone goes to connective tissues to help those tissues minimize the strain on them by disease.

Retail Food Prices Change Little
By The Associated Press
Retail food prices showed very little change this week.
Eggs turned lower after rising as much as 10 cents a dozen last week, and were marked down two to six cents in many stores. Some beef cuts were boosted a few cents a pound.
Even in produce departments, changes were mostly minor. Cabbage, potatoes and tomatoes were a little higher most places. Brussels sprouts, carrots, cucumbers, iceberg lettuce, peppers and sweet potatoes a trifle lower.
The week-end storms which disrupted transportation and closed stores in several states had only slight effect on food supplies or prices, agriculture department markets analysts in New York reported.
"Trading in perishable foods slowed almost to a stop in many marketing centers as housewives apparently stayed home and fed their families from stocks on their shelves and in home freezers," one said.
A spokesman for the federal-state frost warning service in Florida—important source of the nation's citrus and winter vegetable supplies—said considerable damage was reported to tomatoes and some damage to pole beans and eggplant on the lower west coast. But otherwise, high winds, dry air and smudgepots kept freezing temperatures from doing widespread harm, he said. Damage to citrus "probably was very light, generally confined to tangerines."
Prospects are good for adequate meat supplies in the months ahead. R.C. Pollock, general manager of the national livestock and meat board, reported. Discussing the situation at the international livestock exposition in Chicago, he said increased supplies in the last three months of this year should boost the 1950 meat output to around 22,400,000 pounds, or about 700,000,000 more than last year.
Here are the foods headlined on the agriculture department's national list of plentifuls for December: hens, broilers, fryers, turkeys, pork, fresh and frozen fish, cheese, cabbage, carrots, onions, Irish potatoes and sweet potatoes.
Also apples, cranberries, oranges, grapefruit, eggs, honey and peanut butter.

Riverside Pitches For AAF Academy
Themed to the idea that future Air Force leaders can be trained best in a fully rounded community, plans for a citizens' appeal to the Air Force Academy Site Selection Board to locate a proposed military flying academy at the March Field-Camp Hahn area, near Riverside, were nearing completion today.
Oscar A. Trippet, vice-president of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Air Force Academy Committee of Southern California, announced that the site selection board on Dec. 13 would visit the March Field-Camp Hahn area, one of 29 "finalist locations" out of more than 300 originally proposed by every state in the Union.
The citizens' committee, organized by the Chamber and composed of representatives of the entire Southland, plans to invite key officials of aviation, educational and civic institutions to meet with the selection board and "demonstrate the magnitude of Southern California interest in Air Force development," Trippet said.
