NOSTALGIA—Somebody mentioned Earl (Dyna) Curtis t'other day. The personable Anaheim Citrus Fruit ass'n foreman played a lot of baseball for Stewart S. (Shorty) Smith including a 21-inning game which Fullerton Hi lost to Pomona college, 4-3. In fact five mebers of that Southern California championship baseball team are Anaheimers now. There's ace pitcher Homer Hurst, the gasoline tester . . Frank Del Giorgio, the Buena Park farmer . . Floyd (Chisel) Hatfield, the machinist . . Vincent (Mutt) Dauser, the poultryman . . The late Willard Hershberger was also a member of the team . . So was Kenneth Vaughan, the Union Oil
Wife of IOOF Leader Killed
One killed and another critically injured was the report received by the Anaheim IOOF Encampment Sunday.
Major General Charles H. Davis, Department Commander of the Patriarch Militant IOOF of California and his wife, Lady Marie Davis, Past President of the Department Association of Ladies Auxiliary, were returning home from a reception in Pasadena Saturday night when an accident occurred at Mountain View, Calif., and Lady Davis was instantly killed. General Davis is at Palo Alto hospital in critical condition.
Brother Otis Cooper of Anaheim Encampment No. 195, died Saturday. Funeral services were conducted from McCauley and Sutter funeral home at 2 p.m., today.
SOUTHERN COUNTY BANK GIVES CHRISTMAS BONUS
The Board of Directors of the Southern County Bank have declared the regular Christmas bonus of one-half of a month's salary for all employees who have completed one full year's service it was announced today by R. Foster Lamm, president.
In fact five mebers of that Southern California championship baseball team are Anaheimers now... There's ace pitcher Homer Hurst, the gasoline tester ... Frank Del Giorgio, the Buena Park farmer ... Floyd (Chisel) Hatfield, the machinist ... Vincent (Mutt) Dauser, the poultryman ... The late Willard Hershberger was also a member of the team ... So was Kenneth Vaughan, the Union Oil company executive ... And his little brother, Floyd (Afky) Vaughn who made baseball history with Pittsburgh and Brooklyn in the National league. Arky was the National League's leading hitter in 1935 with a .385 average ... Thomas McElhaney who grew up in Anaheim but transferred to Fullerton in his sophomore year was an outfielder ... Oakie Adams, Fullerton's all-around star, and Larry Hemus, one-time Anaheim softball star, were the other members of that team—a team, incidentally, which dropped only one league game. That was to Anaheim, a course, by a 4-3 count ... Theo Quarton, the lumberman, Herman Lenz, the agriculturist, and Wray Pomeroy, the plucky little whirrwind, were members of the Colonist nine that knocked 'em over.
AT LAST—It looks like motorists will get a break at last. The state is going to put signals along Manslaughter avenue, making it possible to get across without getting wrecked.
VIGNETTE — Herman (Eric) Lenz was quite a baseballer in his day. He was a better than average pitcher and when he didn't pitch he patrolled the pastures for Arthur L. (Lucky) Nunn. One day about 20 years ago at Los Angeles, Eric was way out in field. The going was rather rough as LAJC scored rather freely, Eric leaned against the wire fence in the shade of a tree. Suddenly, Coach Nunn bellowed: "Eric, put on a cap and look like a ball player!" ... That was just an incident in a ball game. Eric graduated and joined the highway patrol. One New Year's Day while directing traffic at the Rose Bowl, Verne Wilkinson, the druggist, shouted: "Eric, put on a cap and look like an officer."

Taxable County Property Totals $400 Million
Assessed value of property subject to local taxes in Orange county reached $437,193,110 for 1950-51, compared with $211,832,-190 for 1944-45 and $439,154,190 for 1949-50. California Taxpayers association reported today.
Included in the total taxable valuation in the county for the current year were $228,584,150 of land,$194,590,575 of improvements on land,$49,009,855 of personal property and money. Assessed value of property exempt from taxation in the county during this year amounts to $32,061,-470; this figure does not include government-owned property, etc., on which no assessed valuation is made.
Total valuation of taxable property in California reached a record high of $13,618,914,537 for 1950-51, the association said. For 1944-45, taxable value of property was $8,967,098,388. For 1949-50 it was $18,287,731,114.
The $18,618,914,587 total property subject to local tax rates in 1950-51 included.$5,009,589,761 valuation of land.$6,552,265,290 in improvements.$9,737,018,837 in personal property and money. Exemptions, statewide, amounted to $679,009,350, and included exemptions granted to householders, veterans, charitable institutions, churches, colleges, etc.
Red Witch Denies Cruelty Charges At Buchenwald
AUGUSBURG. Germany (AP)—Ilse Koch denied in court today that she had ever heard of the "singing horses" of Buchenwald concentration camp.
According to charges against the widow of the camp's former commander—the "singing horses" were teams of Jewish prisoners required to sing as they pulled heavy wagons at running speed.
The plump, red-haired woman—who said yesterday she was "merely a housewife" in the camp—insisted she had nothing to do with any of the cruel punishments at Buchenwald.
She admitted to the German court that she saw prisoners forced to carry heavy building stones but claimed she had nothing to do with the camp administration and "no influence" on the way her husband ran it.
Frau Koch is charged with inciting 45 murders and 135 attempted murders of camp inmates—Germans and Austrians, and with responsibility for scores of other cruelties. She already has served four years of a life sentence, now commuted, given her by U. S. war crimes court for acts against Allied Nationals.
The woman whom Buchenwald prisoners called the "Red Witch" defended herself in a soft voice before the Germany court. German spectators snickered in derision at some of her denials.
Yesterday her countrymen shouted "kill her" as she was led from the courtroom at the end of the first day of her trial, which is expected to last at least six weeks.
Eric leaned against the wire fence in the shade of a tree. Suddenly, Coach Nunn bellowed: "Eric, put on a cap and look like a ball player!" That was just an incident in a ball game. Eric graduated and joined the highway patrol. One New Year's Day while directing traffic at the Rose Bowl, Verne Wilkinson, the druggist, shouted: "Eric, put on a cap and look like an officer." Since then on numerous occasions someone will remind the horticulturist of his baseball - playing days by shouting: "Eric, put on a cap."
IMPRESSARIO—Steve Luther, the Cypress rancher, must be given a lot of credit for having run a ball team at a time when ball teams were few and far between, because many of the leading players of the county would never have gotten a break otherwise.
CUFFNOTES—Santa Monica's the Rev. Fred M. Judson told the Anaheim Rotary Club that "mixed emotions" could be defined as "watching your mother-in-law drive your new Cadillac off a cliff". The good reverend also said Los Angeles could be defined as "17 suburbs in search of a city". Hugo Schultz, that genial, good natured Anaheimer who knows furniture, might tell you that last definition sounds like a crack originating with the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. Dale Sellon is one Anaheimer who knows it pays to get in on the ground floor. His hep-y'self gas station 'tween Anaheim and Fullerton was one of the first in the county. Artur Plyter is one Anaheimer who really appreciates beauty. Any artist would... David Perry Maynard, one-time Anaheim newspaperman, is now secretary of the Santa Ana Ikes... Gerard Munoz who is a Texan has a big job with the railroad: keeping the track between Orange and La Mirada in A-1 first class shape. That he does. But railroading in California isn't nothing like it used to be in the Panhandle... It is as Fay Miller and Jim from Texas, feller, and mighty proud to be away from thar."

VA Urges Care In Home Buying
Home-seeking veterans were cautioned today by the Veterans Administration to be sure they fully understand any contract or document they are asked to sign, before they risk a deposit or down payment on a house.
Inquiries to VA from veterans in several parts of the country indicate they have experienced a variety of difficulties in attempting to buy homes with the aid of VA-guaranteed loans.
In most cases, VA said, the difficulty arose from the veterans' failure to read and understand the sale contracts and other papers which they signed.
The bulk of complaints center upon documents which veterans find later are only reservations to purchase, and not firm sale contracts, or upon "escalator" and "hostility" clauses included in sales agreements.
While there's nothing illegal in the action of the seller, VA explained, complaining veterans are convinced they have been cheated, and have requested VA to protect them.

Taft is Favored In Santa Ana Play
Santa Ana city champion Wally Taft proved his right to the favorite's role in the Willowick golf club's President's Cup tournament last week when he defeated Bob Bissett, two-and-one to go into the second round.
In all, six flights wound up their opening round play at the Santa Ana links. Next week's top flight pairings match Taft with Walt Bell Doug Wheeler with Hal Gregg, Mark Hendricks with Walt Loescher; and Dave Djvre with Chuck Hargrove.
In the hectic fifth flight competition last week, three of four matches went into extra holes with George Oatman, Charles Honchons, and Clyde Newton all winning on the 20th carpet.
