Colonist Cagers to Colonist
AUHS Favored in First Outing;
Bees in Prelim Tilt Tomorrow
Just in the nick of time—just when it's getting so that it’s impossible to do something outdoors—Anaheim’s athletes move indoors, inaugurating their basketball season tomorrow afternoon against Valencia high school.
Varsity game time is set for approximately 4 p.m., with a Bee game to precede it at 3.
Colonist Coach Sam Keith has been singled out by many as the Sunset League coach with the team to beat for the title, and thus winds up on the same spot that he enjoyed earlier this year while directing a B football team that was a defending champion.
Team Has Plenty
Actually, there is plenty of reason why Keith should be designated. His team has just about everything that could be desired. It has experience, it has speed, it has shooting ability, it has height, and it has confidence.
If there is any one detrimental factor, it is probably an overabundance of this latter quality. Although the team is not composed of a group of egomaniacs, there are those among its members who are apparently awed by their own ability.
Three High Ones
The other attributes, however, still remain. Keith will probably start three men, back from last year's team, who tower well above the 6 foot mark—Ronnie Faulkner, Dennis Denny and Sheldon "Grape" Welch.
The other two spots are still being contested and appear to be between Ira Webber, Jim Ball, and Raul Schmidt. In contrast to the skyscrapers, neither Webber nor Ball reach 5 feet 8 inches while Schmidt is somewhere between these two marks.
Valencia Smaller
Valencia Coach John Tynes will bring a somewhat smaller squad to face the Colonist tomorrow. Center Willard Danker is

Valencia Smaller
Valencia Coach John Tynes will bring a somewhat smaller squad to face the Colonist tomorrow. Center Willard Danker is the tall man on the team, and he is 6 feet 1 inch, not a great height in basketball. Danker and guards Rudy Cassillas and Daron House make up the experience of the team, those being the returning lettermen from last year's team which had a record, according to Tynes, that was "not too good."
For forwards, Tynes brings up Kelly Hester and Joe Campos, both from last year's Orange League championship B team. Neither are strangers to Tynes who coached the Bees last season.
Following tomorrow's game, the Colonists will have a one-day respite before facing Tustin in the first local night game in the AUHS gym on Friday.
Navy Publicist Mourns Popularity
ANNAPOLIS, MD. (P) — Try putting three pounds of something into a one-pound bag.
It'll give you an idea of the squeezing to get in the press box at the Army-Navy football game.
Navy is host for next Saturday's game in Philadelphia. So it's John Cox, publicity man for Middle sports, who's buried under the requests for passes.
They pile in from newspapers no bigger than the circular from your corner grocery, sharpsters, would-be scalpers, non-existent news agencies and long-lost friends.
"Dear John" even is asked to help Cupid. One correspondent has promised his bride-to-be attendance at the Army-Navy game as part of their honeymoon.
"Should I tell the one and only that she is about to marry a nobody who can't get tickets?" he writes. "You wouldn't want to see a happy home broken up before..."
Grace Lutheran led all the piling up a 21-2 lead in the quarter and leading 51-20 at three-quarter mark.
In a city league practice game Dr. Struve MD's erased a point half-time deficit and 66-52 over Bob Williams Spor Goods.

Should I tell the one and only that she is about to marry a nobody who can't get tickets?" he writes. "You wouldn't want to see a happy home broken up before it's established, would you?"
Besides the "please rush tickets," Cox is asked to get a hotel reservation for the couple, too.
From August 8 to Sept. 1 Jim Konstanty, Phillies relief star, appeared in 11 straight games in which his mates either won or tied.

QUINTET OF SIX—From this half dozen, Colonist Coach Sam Keith will choose his starting lineup for tomorrow's season at Valencia high school. The five will come from Ira Webber, Ronnie Faulkner, Raul Schmidt, Dennis Denny, Jim Ball, and "Grape" Welch. Faulkner, Denny and Welch are lettermen, while Webber, Schmidt and Ball come up from last year's B team.

NEW YORK (AP) — Princeton, champion of the Ivy league four-time winner of Big Three all honors, placed four men in 1950 all-star team selected by Associated Press by concise coaches, officials, and men.
Innslyvania, a contender for spoop title until the final day, three men.
The four remaining players on first team come from as many recent colleges.

ORDINARILY there wouldn’t be too much interest in Orange county about the Ventura junior college basketball team. Ordinarily there wouldn’t be—only this isn’t ordinarily.
The gimmick is that Ventura happens to be one of the three teams that were able to beat Fullerton’s Hornets last year (the others being Long Beach city college and the Southern California Freshmen). Off-the-cuff rumors floating out of Fullerton indicate that Alex Omalev is assembling another strong outfit up there.
BEYER So just how strong is this Ventura club that is defending the mythical Southern California jaysee title. (To those who say, “What championship?” it is pointed out that Los Angeles city college, Fullerton and Long Beach were the other strong clubs last year. Ventura beat Fullerton in the only clash between these two teams, won two out of three from Los Angeles, and two out of two from Long Beach.) A little personal scouting was performed on Saturday night when the pirates made their “official” debut in front of the home-folk by hosting Bakersfield Jaysee. The conclusion here is that Ventura, like gas, “has got it.”
The Pirates lost three of their top six players—fireball forward Frank Kerker going to Cal Poly, No. 1 reserve Bob Eck matriculating to Whittier, and Guard Bob Perry merely going to work. It was Perry, incidentally, who made the phantom basket against Fullerton last year that won the Chaffey tournament for Ventura.
Six minus three leaves three—and what a three! There’s forward Ed Millan, all CIF at Ventura high in 1948-49. There’s Charlie Dunn, the sharp-shooting, rebounding guard who is an amazing leaper for his height. And, of course, there is center Ernie Hall who was all-jaysee last year, set a new Western State conference scoring record, twice tallied 36 points in a game, and led all junior college players in the country in scoring.
On the roster are about six new faces, but only one comes up from the high school this year. He is forward Jim Crockom, an all-CIF pick last season. Two more are up from the jayvees, and the rest are imports swiped from Indiana high schools by Coach Elmer McCall.
Well, to get back to Saturday night, the Pirates had a very slow start, but still managed to pile up the points in swamping Bakersfield 83-86. Hall had a pretty good night at center with 29. Previously, they had beaten a Navy team twice by 89-36 and 69-29.
The real interest to Fullerton comes on Dec. 13 when the Chaffey tournament starts its 1950 grind. Ventura is going, Fullerton is going, and the Hornets will have a chance to revenge their college, Fullerton and Long Beach were the other strong clubs last year. Gator Bowl Heads Still on Prowl
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., (AP) — Stunned by losing Clemson to the Orange Bowl, Gator Bowl officials took another look at available teams today to try for one that would pull a big crowd.
When Alabama was here for last Saturday's game with Florida, the unofficial word was that 'Bama was not interested in the Gator Bowl.
Most likely pick is reported to be the Southern conference champion, Washington and Lee (8-2). Wake Forest (6-1-2) entered the picture, too.

Stephens Deal By Bosox Hinted
BOSTON (LP)—With deposed Cleveland Player-Manager Lou Boudreau in their fold and millionaire Owner Tom Yawkey's checkbook wide open, the Boston Red Sox have high hopes of swinging another of their breathtaking baseball deals during next week's major leagues meeting at St. Petersburgh, Fla.
The addition of Boudreau, obtained as a free agent, makes shortstop Vern (Junior) Stephens expendable as trade-bait for much needed pitching strength.
Both General Manager Joe Cronin and Steve O'Neill, his bench pilot, have expressed keen interest in such seasoned pitchers as the Philadelphia Athletics' Lou Brissie and the St. Louis Browns' Ned Garver.
"Now that we have Boudreau, we can afford to give up a regular infielder to get pitchers," O'Neill explained by telephone from his Cleveland home. "As soon as I get to St. Petersburg, I'll find out what Pitchers are on the market. Right now we have no deals on the fire."

NEW YORK (LP)—Here's how the nation's sportswriters and sportscasters, in a preseason poll, thought the top 10 football teams would finish this year:
1. Notre Dame.
2. Army.
3. Michigan.
4. Tennessee.
5. Texas.
6. Oklahoma.
7. Stanford.
8. Illinois.
9. Cornell.
10. Southern Methodist.
State; 9—Michigan; 10—Clemson.
In an Associated Press pre-season poll, Oklahoma was picked to finish sixth, by the nation's experts. Nine straight victories and another Big Seven championship changed their minds, however.
Notre Dame, No. 1 in three of the four previous years, was selected almost unanimously to finish on top. The Irish, however, had one of their poorest camOne Tells Another

Stephens' five-figure salary, however, may be a stumbling block in negotiations with the Athletics or Browns. And it may be necessary to approach much wealthier clubs as the Indians and Detroit Tigers, who also have pitchers the Red Sox envy.
But dickerings with the Indians or Tigers could easily result in just about the most sensational deal in many years, the departure of slugger Ted Williams from the Red Sox.
