Hornets Stage Late Rally To Deadlock Santa Ana Don
Fullerton Junior college's football team yesterday broke the rules of good faith on two counts.
First, the once-humbug Hornets scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to tie Santa Ana, mighty Eastern conference champions, 18-18, in a Turkey day meeting at Fullerton stadium. The ever-trusting Dons, who hadn't lost a league game, were no doubt mortified that the Fullertons should forget their underdog rating.
In the second instance, the donors of a new perpetual trophy for this annual battle—Santa Ana's Second Guessers club and the Quarterback club of Fuller ton—were offended.
Spoil Presentation
That the Hornets should spoil the inaugural presentation of their trophy was plain bad manners. Suggestions as to solving the problem ranged from putting it in cold storage to sawing the nomeno in two.
Coach Tex Oliver's hearties sent the partisan crowd of more than 6000 plumb out of its mind with a second-half comeback that won't soon be forgotten.
On the tag end of an 18-6 score halfback Bob Umphress fumbled. Jack King recovered on the Santa Ana 30 for Fullerton—and the drive was on.
Late Drive
With a third down on the 28 quarterback Don Ames, former Anaheim gridder, fired a strike down the middle to back Tom Wylie, moving the ball to the 14. Ames threw another to end Dick Welles for 11 yards to set up the score.
Award of Trophy Stymies Officials
Officials of the Santa Ana Second Guessers club and the Quarterback club of Fullerton co-sponsors of the new perpetual trophy for the Fullerton JC—Santa Ana college game—were stymied yesterday.
The tie contest baffled them as to what to do about the infant award. It might have been a "moral victory" for the Hornets, but that didn't aid matters.
Immediately after the game, the public address announcer boomed out to the fast dwindling crowd:
"The question of the trophy"
The tense Fullerton groaned loudly when Collie tra point attempt was blocked Charley Sitton.
Halfback Bob Ferguson ought to receive a citation kind for the brilliant game played, kept the Dons at bay last frantic moments with booming punts.
Ferguson Fearless!
The man Ferguson, who kicks averaged 42.4 yards, the main reason the Santa Ana didn't score 15 TDs in the half.
While Don left halfback Brancato was supposed to whole show, Ferguson made and his accomplices work for scores.
After a 68-yard punt to half-foot line by Ferguson Dons came back immediately first. Quarterback Ray scey took a full spinner to the center of the Hornet line lowing an intercepted pass traveled 59 yards to paydio Searcie's kick was blocked, all other of his efforts.

Herb Collier then scrambled over from three yards out for the touchdown. Fullback Collier's kick for the point was wide, however, and the count stood at 18-12.
After halting the Dons near midfield, the Hornets roared back minutes later to stun the populace even more. Halfback Charles Holloway gathered in Floyd Strain's kick on the 7 and rammed back 33 yards to the 40.
Almost Halted
An opposing penalty almost stopped the Fullertons there. Ames accurate passing pitched through his connected Hollaway over the middle and speedy halfback cut across to left sidelines down to the San Antonio.
Collier dove over a mass of bodies from the 2 for the game, doing so.

Traditional Tilts on Tap
As the 1950 football season draws to a close, traditional rivalries and showdown battles fill tomorrow's grid card.
Top game in the country will be played in Knoxville, Tenn., where the Wildcats of Kentucky attempt overpower Coach Col. Bob Neyland's Tennessee Volunteers.
The undefeated Cats, sparked by all-American candidate quarterback Vito "Baba" Parilli, are favored to halt the Vols.
From past performances the California-Stanford game in Memorial stadium in Berkeley doesn't figure as main attraction. But in this annual duel the past means nothing, and stunning upsets have come about in this yearly classic.
Bears Favored
Coach Lynn Waldorf's Rose Bowl-bound Bears close out their season against the Indians—with hopes for their third straight PCC title and Pasadena jaunt in the offering. The Golden Bears are two-touchdown favorites to down Stanford.
Although lost in the Pacific Coast conference standings, Southern California's Trojans and the Bruins of UCLA will put on their usual wing-ding fight in the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Outmanned completely by California two weeks ago, Red Sanders' Bruins will come back at Troy with all their fury to win possession of the coveted Victory Bell.
Midlands Thriller
Jeff Cravath's team, 7-point underdogs, throw the running of Al "Hoagy" Carmichael and Jim Sears, who looked great against Washington last week, at the Westwood crew.
A thriller in the Midlands lodges as the surprising Nebraska Cornhuskers take on the mighty Oklahoma home team of Bud Wilkinson.
The Sooners have a 29-game winning streak at stake in this contest in which they are picked to win. However, Bobby Reynolds, leading scorer in the nation with 134 points, may well pit punch enough into the Husker attack to upset the all-conquering Okla. Hornets.
Reynolds has scored in every Nebraska game—including three where the Grand Island, New Sophomore, scored every single point registered by his team. He kicks extra points too.
Ike Williams
Whips Miceli
MILWAUKEE (P)—Lightweight champion Ike Williams won a split decision over Joe Miceli of New York last night in a non-title bout that lacked most of the luster of their last meeting when Micelli upset his Trenton, N.J., opponent.
The 10-round bout in Milwaukee's Arena before 5728 fans saw Miceli and Williams fall far below expectations. A slow right from the outset, the pair was content to make it a clutching and holding affair through the first four rounds.
Williams, who weighed 146 pounds, did most of the leading but his punches either curled around Miceli's body or went over his shoulders.
Lions Wallop Yanks, 49-14 As Bobby Layne Runs Wild
DETROIT (P)—The Detroit Lions stuffed themselves with seven touchdowns today as they whipped the New York Yanks, 49-14, before a turnout of 30,206 fans.
The one-sided decision just about ended the Yanks hopes of winning a division title in the National Football league.
It was the highest score run up by the Lions this year, and the largest total they ever scored in Briggs stadium.
Quarterback Bobby Layne, former No. 1 man in the Yanks' attack, made the holiday an unhappy one for his old teammates. He threw two touchdown passes and scored a TD himself.
Won Earlier
The Yanks beat the Detroiters, 44-21, earlier this season, and were a 7-point favorite today.
The most spectacular Towntail hes came on a 36-yard run from scrimmage by halfback Bob Hoerlischemyer and a 65-yard pass play by Layne to end Cloye Box.
The Lions not only played their best all-around game of the season, but they also capitalized on the mistakes of the Yanks—and there were many of those.
Worst Showing
Ace passer George Batterman of the Yanks, who threw four touchdown passes against Detroit in their earlier meeting, had to settle for only one today—a 26-yard toss to halfback George Taliaferro.
