RECENTLY DO DEFEATED THE GREAT STEE WALSH, TWO-TIME OLYMPIC WINNER, AND SET A NATIONAL SPRINT RECORD! 11-21-50 (Released by The Bull Syndicate, Inc.) Nurserymen say... by Orange County Nurserymen's Association One of the finest perennials for the mixed border is Columbine. The long-tailed glaucous green leaves have a fern-like appearance that makes the plant attractive at other times than when actually blooming. Flowers may be yellow, white, pink, red or blue and the spurs (there is one on each of the five petals) may be short and straight or long and curving. Species are found around the world and numerous hybrids have been developed which are very fine. The plants grow for a number of years, giving a desirable permanency to the border. In immediate coastal areas full sun may be all right, but in most places, and for most species, partial shade is needed. A well-trained, loose soil, with fairly constant moisture is best. Ample leaf mold or well rotted manure should be added to overcome the lack of drainage in heavy soils. Although classed as a hardy perennial columbine may live only two or three years, especially if drainage is poor or moisture is lacking much of the year. Seed may be sown from August to March, or plants set out then. Early fall planting gives bloom the following spring. If started AUGH? ROCK MY ER LOVE YOU? DO GEE! CARLO IS A MAN/AC I'D BETTER COOL HIM DOWN! NO-NO, CARLO! I WAS NEVER SURE YOU CARED! BUT WE MUST GET SCORCHY UP TO THE HOUSE... CE MORE THE SLACK TAKEN UP...THE IP GIVES A KIND SHUDDER... Positions in 14 different trainee shipfitter, boatbuilder, electrician, painter, radio mechanic, electronics mechanic, inside man whistle, shipwright, telephone electrician, helper shipfitter, combination welder, sandblaster and operator, and gasoline distribution system—are open. The mechanics are needed to repair Navy ships and equipment. Persons who have had experience in any of these trades should apply for further information. In San Diego, the employment office is located at 1608 Fourth Ave. If the plants in the border should be twelve to eighteen inches. Growth in poor soils may be improved with a good mulch of wellotted manure. Aphis usually gather on the undersides of the leaves and mealy bugs sometimes attack near the soil surface. For the aphis a good pyrethrum or nicotine spray is best. A refined oil spray will keep the mealy bugs under control. Even washing the plants with a sharp spray from the garden hose does much to control these pests. Mildew can be controlled with sulphur or carbamate sprays. A virus disease attacks columbine, if serious the plants are host destroyed and replaced.
