Wharton Coach Eyes Rose Bowl
WHARTON, Tex., (UF) — Coach Johnny Frankie of Wharton county junior college, which has one of the finest football records in the country, says he wants his team to play in the Little Rose Bowl at Pasadena in December.
Frankie has had his team in three bowl games in the past two years, winning all of them. But he's shooting for the top this time.
In three years as head coach, Frankie has won 30 games and lost only three. The team now has a string of 16 straight victories and has played teams in junior college conferences in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. It has been champion of the South Texas junior college conference the past two years. The year before it won the Texas junior college conference crown.
"My team this year is the best balanced club I've ever coached," he says. "It has fine teamwork and the will to win."
Wharton has two games to play — Victoria junior college and University of Houston freshmen. "If we get past those two and wind up with an unbeaten record, I'd sure like to see the kids play in the Little Rose Bowl," he declares.
