The trapped First Cavalry Division force was about 50 miles to the east. Normally a regiment totals about 5000 men, but the undisclosed number trapped was obviously less than this: Escapes and heavy casualties had reduced the number. Earlier a U.S. First corps spokesman referred to two battalions of the regiment as being surrounded and said they were believed to total the equivalent of one battalion. This would be about 1000 men. Later front line reports spoke of the full regiment being cut off Wednesday night near a dry river bed four miles southwest of Unsan, and still later said the trapped unit represented "a considerable portion" of the regiment.
