When a food market celebrates its anniversary by marking down quality meat as much as 14 cents per pound, it is something to shout about, and that is just what Alpha Beta Markets have done to celebrate 40 years of service to the Southland. I was in the west side Alpha Beta store yesterday as the sale started and saw Barney Rold, meat market manager, put those low, low price tags on the juicy red meat in the case. The center cut pot roast caught my eye because it was so squarely cut with so little bone or fat. The rib steaks were cut from the small end of the prime rib, an excellent way to serve this favorite part of the beef to a small family or to a larger one on the day your cooking time is limited. As usual, I could not resist buttonholing the boss for a story. Barney tells me that meat comes almost daily to the two Anaheim Alpha Beta Markets from their packing house in Huntington Beach. Steers are scientifically fattened for top flavor on 3600 acres of pasture land in Santa Ana Canyon. Because Alpha Beta is in the most business right from to buy another this week. Pork continues to be plentiful and a good buy whether it be a roast, chop or spare rib. To accompany your meat course, there is a surprising assortment of squash on the market. Choose among banana, hubbard, summer, zucchini or chyote. A chyote resembles a big green pear but is a very tasty version of squash. If you have never tackled a chyote, peel and slice it, and simmer slowly until tender. Ahy-body have a special recipe using chyote? It grows in Anaheim gardens and deserves more notice than it gets. A pan-ready fryer sounds good to me. Fresh local chickens have helped build a business for the Day and Night Market at the corner of Lincoln and Stanton. You can depend on them. I have raved about Day and Night hamburger before—a superior product and definitely a good buy. I always save the dessert till last even when doing my weekly shopping. Could not choose between pie and cake so I bought them both at Hadley's Bakery. Fruit pies are all made from the fresh frozen fruit at Hadley's and As usual, I could not resist buttonholing the boss for a story. Barney tells me that meat comes almost daily to the two Anaheim Alpha Beta Markets from their packing house in Huntington Beach. Steers are scientifically fattened for top flavor on 3000 acres of pasture land in Santa Ana Canyon. Because Alpha Beta is in the meat business right from the producer to the consumer, it is an economical process and the economy is passed on to the housewife as she buys Alpha Beta meat. If you have a deep freeze, you will be interested to know that you can buy a half or a quarter of beef at either of the two Anaheim Alpha Beta Markets at packing house prices. The butchers will cut and wrap it as you like. There is no charge for cutting, just a small charge to cover the wrapping involved. Alpha Beta's big anniversary sale will continue for the next 10 days. With the holidays so close at hand, it is a good opportunity to stock up on pumpkin, mince meat, cranberry sauce and the like. Look for cans bearing the "Food Club" brand. Food bearing this label is packed by a cooperative organization in which the workers share in the profits and so are right on their toes through every operation. "Food Club" workers go from harvest to harvest throughout the country in order to pack only the choicest fruits and vegetables at the highest peak of perfection. The "Food Club" label on canned goods at Alpha Beta stores means top quality at a low price. A new shipment of candied fruits is just being unpacked at Safeway; a timely reminder that it is just about fruit cake time once more. You can buy these candied fruits separately in budget packs or in packages containing mixed and chopped fruits. Combine them with Safeway's fresh fall nuts for all sorts of treats from the kitchen. And speaking of Safeway, when I had a guest at dinner one night last week, I served one of Safeway's sirloin stegaks. There were three generous servings at a cost of $1.30 and was that steak delicious! I have orders from hubby helped build a business for the Day and Night Market at the corner of Lincoln and Stanton. You can depend on them. I have raved about Day and Night hamburger before—a superior product and definitely a good buy. I always save the dessert till last even when doing my weekly shopping. Could not choose between pie and cake so I bought them both at Hadley's Bakery. Fruit pies are all made from the fresh frozen fruit at Hadley's and there is no charge or deposit on the tins that come with them. The cake that won me was a high snowy white angel food. Made predominately of eggs, they are easy on the waist line and a nutritious sweet for the kiddies. District Chest Meeting Held Royal Marten, 9761 S.
