GLAMOUR GALS HOLD ROYAL FLUSH By BETTY CLARKE AP Newsfeatures Beauty Editor The glamour world is taking playing cards to its bosom this fall. Brooke Cadwallader designed a series of scarfs with antique playing card motifs, Ceil Chapman did a dress in "high-stakes gold" and a new "red trey" lipstick takes its color straight from the Canasta deck. A real lipstick red should be popular this year. Red without a tinge of blue or yellow should be high card on the lady's charm score pad. This high potency red will give a lift to your dark gray flannels or dramatize glowing plaids. The biggest make-up headache, come chilly weather, is the problem of keeping lip rouge intact throughout the day. A girl must be a stickler for lip grooming even when she isn't wearing lipstick. To keep lips smooth she must remove lip rouge before applying a new application, cream her lips at every opportunity, and when lips feel unusually dry, apply a coat of vegetable oil or a dry skin mixture to them before going to bed. It takes just a few more seconds to do a good lip makeup and it certainly is more attractive than a red smear of lip rouge applied on the run. When applying lipstick that you want to last an entire day, first be sure that your lips are dry. If moist, the rouge will cake and roll. Powder your lips slightly. Then, with a lip brush, etch the outline of your upper lip. Avoid the Cupid's bow or a too-thin lip line which tends to make the mouth look harsh. Minimize an upper lip that is too full. After outlining the upper lip, working from the center out, fill in generously. Then gently and allow the previous application entirely and start over. Personal Items Kirk Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Allen of 937 S. Olive st., was brought home suddenly Tuesday morning after becoming extremely ill. He was attending UCLA where he is a junior. He is expected to remain out of school for about a semester. Visitors are allowed and will be welcome. Jane Macloghlin, buyer for the Millerick Shop, recently returned to Anaheim after spending some time at the Fashion Preview at Palm Springs. Mrs. Frank Doretti, 327 S. Olive st., is at home following a third operation on her arm which was seriously injured in an automobile accident last Thanksgiving day. She was confined in Queen of Angels hospital, Los Angeles. Relatives report that she is recovering successfully. CLEAN UPHOLSTERY Rayon upholstery fabrics may be safely cleaned at home by using soapless lathers as directed on the container. Clean a small area at a time, rubbing suds well into fabric, then wipe the fabric with a clean cloth or sponge. a well-defined imprint. Fill in this lower outline. Tip the corners slightly to give the illusion of a smile and a more youthful look. Gently press the lips on a sheet of cleansing tissue, powder lightly, and apply more lipstick. Blot until no trace of rouge appears on the tissue. This not only insures against leaving a red smear on cigarettes, glasses and linens. It will keep lips fresh and alive looking throughout the day. If you feel that lipstick needs re-doing, remove the previous application entirely and start over. Stanton Items Joe Manning, 9352 Chapman ave., member of the Stanton Lion's club, which is now building a new clubhouse with volunteer labor at Chestnut near Cerritos ave., proposed to the Orange county board of supervisors, Tuesday, that the club will make an offer to the board Oct. 31, for a low rent lease to the county on land adjoining the clubhouse to be used as a recreation center for the youth of the community. The members of the Lions club would supervise the recreation. Manning said that for 10 miles around the area there are no parks or recreation facilities of any kind. For a prophetic portrayal of old age see the SILVER WHISTLE, one of the Broadway hits written by Robert McEnroe. On Stage Jay Hern as Oliver Erwenter, a great, but lazy lover and Elizabeth Robbins as Miss Tripp, his beloved, are the leading characters who make life interesting again for the old folks. Members of the supporting cast include: Elden Buck, Mike Casey, Bette Bolton, Frank Mortensen, Bob Petigo, James Krueger, Dan Swift, Ronald Johnson and Dennis Turner. Anaheim Night Zena Bloomfield, Pat Sullivan, Wes Bose and Janice Schamp are the four Anaheimers appearing in the production, and all four will be remembered for their dramatic abilities in high school. Who could forget the women with all the children in the 1948 junior play Old Doc? Not many, for Zena practically stole the show. Giving her competition however, was Pat Sullivan with her portrayal of an Irish woman. Wes Bose was another of the many who took part in this outstanding play. Janice Schamp can be remembered for her leading role in the 1948 junior class play "June Mad." Several members of Anaheim VFW Auxiliary attended Buena Park Inspection night Wednesday. Representing the social club were Opal Walters, department junior vice-president. Florence Carroll, Elmo Richards, Minnie Harvey, Vingon Gamble, Adelaide Schroeder, Emma Danield, Helen Maas, Dorothy Mallonee and Martha Russell. My flower garden always goes to pot at this time of the year and from the looks of some of my neighbor's yards, I see I am not alone with my troubles. According to Sunset Magazine, you can work from one end of the garden to the other, cleaning up, replanting and planting. From the looks of my garden, this is good advice. Since I am an amateur gardener with more enthusiasm than skill, I decided to get some help from those in the know around town. The plants at Lee's Nursery always look so vigorous and green as I go by, that I made Lee's my first stop. The Lee family are all gardening experts. Son David is in his second year at Cal. Poly. in San Dimas where he is studying ornamental horticulture. Bill Gieger is head of the department which includes indoor planters, camillias, fuschias and bedding plants. Sure it was a woman gardener, but her method worked—so there! Actually, the prongs on a ranunculus claw do point down while the fuzzy crown should be on top. You will decide ranunculus are worth this little trouble when you see their large double blossoms abloom with gorgeous coloring this spring. Cinararias, coral bells and primroses do well in that shady spot you have been wondering what to do with. Tulips can stand part shade, too. Pansies and violas do well during winter months. Know what makes for big blooms? Blood-meal. Yes sir, dig a little blood-meal into the soil and watch for lots of enormous pansies with happy expressions on their faces. While you are debating about what to plant, you can be getting your garden ready. Pull out the dead annuals of summer and cut back the perennials which have Neat Daytimer The Lee family are all gardening experts. Son David is in his second year at Cal. Mrs. Forest Lee, an experienced gardener herself, loaded me up with all sorts of free booklets: a pocket garden guide, a newsy brochure called "Garden Chats" and the monthly garden magazine that is free to all customers. "These will answer all my questions, I am sure, but give me a thumb nail sketch of what can be planted now", I asked. This is what Mrs. Lee told me. If you have not already planted your sweet peas, do it now so that you will have blooms by Christmas. Seeds of allyssum, sweet William, linaria, forget-me-not, Iceland poppy, lupine and calendula can be planted now as well as stock and snapdragons. In order to save gardening time, you can buy seedling plants, a good selection of which is now available at Lee's Nursery. And another thing—when you see the fine bulbs and visualize the spectacular blooms they will produce, you will waste no time in preparing the soil for fall bulb planting.
