Colts Seek to End Year-Long Famine LOS ANGELES CO.—The Baltimore Colts arrive here today and the prospects of ending a 17-game losing streak in a game Sunday with the Los Angeles Rams appear bleak. The swing team of the National Football league won its last game Oct. 2, 1949, from Buffalo in the now dead All-America conference. Baltimore dropped the next six in succession and this year, in the National league, has been stopped 11 times. “This is just what worries me,” said Joe Stydahar of the Rams. “The Colts can be tough and they are bound to beat someone someday. It could be us this week after the way they played against Philadelphia last Sunday.” Baltimore stymied the powerful Eagles at 14-14 until, with only eight minutes left in the game, Philadelphia came on to win, 24 to 14: "The Colonists, who have two and lost one so far they will rule slight favorites of Oilers—a condition that may furrowed the brow of Heard Clare Van Hobrebele with "My boys can read the he moaned," and see whereington Beach only beat Hodens 6-0 while we beat them And then their coach wasn't disappointed about loss to Covina last week they were outmanned." Nation’s Best-Army, Okies–Relax on ‘Breather’ Weekend NEW YORK (AP)—This is “breather” week for the two top college football teams in the country—Army and Oklahoma. If either of the powerhouses loses tomorrow, it would be as big a bombshell as Purdue beating Notre Dame two weeks ago. But each figure to triumph almost as it pleases. Top-rated Army, fresh from licking Michigan of the Big Ten, this time invades the Ivy league for a tussle with Harvard, one of the weak sisters of the loop, at Cambridge, Mass. The Oklahoma Sooners, sporting the longest winning streak in college football —24 games—entertains Kansas State of the Big Seven. This, too, should provide easy pickings for Bud Wilkinson’s eleven, for Kansas State has dropped four straight games. No SMU Breather Southern Methodist, the No. 3 outfit, however, could run into trouble. Moanin’ Rusty Russell leads his band to Houston, Texas, for a battle with Rice that could decide the eventual winner of the Southwest conference race. That 56-0 triumph Southern Methodist scored over Oklahoma A. & M. last week apparently isn’t fazing Rice in the least. Rice came out with a 41-27 decision last year. Notre Dame, dumped to the No. 11 spot in the national ranking, takes on Indiana. If Frank Leahy’s band wins impressively, it might regain some of its lost prestige. Score on Clemson The last major untouched goal line was crossed yesterday when Clemson played a 14-14 tie with South Carolina at Columbia, S.C., Carolina, Clemson had won its first three games without yielding a score. Most of the conferences have important frays on tap Saturday. Besides the SMU-Rice affair in the Soutwest, there is Texas-Arkansas at Austin and Texas A. & M.-Texas Christian at College. SPORTS MIRROR By the Associated Press Today a year ago—South Carolina upset Clemson, 27-18. Five years ago—the New York Yankees said there would be night ball in Yankee Stadium in 1946. Ten years ago—the Washington Redskins posted their fifth straight National Football League victory, defeating Philadelphia, 34 to 17. Fifteen years ago—Hank Greenberg of the Detroit Tigers was voted the most valuable player in the American League. In back and front It is also reported, however, that Huntington Beach will not be in the pink of health for tonight's encounter. Four first stringers were injured in the Oilers' game with Downey last week and it is doubtful how much service they will see. No Cinch At any rate, Huntington Beach is not expected to be a pusnover. It is a tough defensive club, Van Hoorebeke says, one that seems to excel in rough crisp tackles—this bit of information coming from the Downey coach. Furthermore, the feeling as they come to Anaheim is that this "is our one chance to win a league game this year." Say, that sounds familiar, doesn't it? Sam Keith's B team, which pulled out a late victory over Bell Gardens and hasn't been able to score since, will play the preliminary at 6 p.m. The lineups: ANAHEIM HUNT BEACH Webb LE Chaney Holve LT Bodine Lamas LG Russell Geselle C Milligan Head RG Penhall Herrera RT W Boswell Cyprian RE Ross Peterson QB Kimball Huesca LH Arevelas Roberts RH R. Carolina, Clemson had won its first three games without yielding a score. Most of the conferences have important frays on tap Saturday. Besides the SMU-Rice affair in the Soutwest, there is Texas-Arkansas at Austin and Texas A. & M.-Texas Christian at College Station. In the Big Ten, Wisconsin, the surprise leader, faces Michigan, which last week bowed to Army. The Wolverines will be out to redeem themselves. Ohio State, No. 9 in the country, and Rose Bowl champion, will play Minnesota at Minneapolis. PCC In East California is favored over Oregon State at Berkeley, while Stanford rates over UCLA at Los Angeles. Two other Coast schools will be involved in intersectional play. Washington, co-leader with California of the PCC, visits Illinois, while Southern California will test Navy. The two leaders of the Ivy league Cornell and Yale—come to grips at Ithica, N. Y. Pennsylvania plays Columbia. Other Stuff In the Southeastern conference, the No. 4 team, Kentucky, choice to head the loop, engages Villa-nova in a non-league game. The big league games will be Tennessee-Alabama, Auburn - Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt - Florida and Georgia-Louisiana State. Maryland, the eighth-ranked team in the country, gets its first taste of league competition when... with Huntington Beach Orange County’s Dozen Football Teams Start Quest for Two Loop Championships With most of them having at least three full-scale practice games behind them, all of the teams of both the Orange and Sunset leagues swing into league action today. All of the Orange games are scheduled for 3 p.m., while the Sunset games will be night tilts at 8. It will be a day of action all throughout the CIF, with 16 other leagues also showing league action involving 48 high school teams. The schedule for Orange county teams: Orange League Garden Grove at Tustin—Tustin’s Tillers are defending league champs, and, as such, are favored to open their quest to retain that title with a victory over Garden Grove. Tustin has won three of its four starts this year and has one very favorable comparative score—Tustin 36, Orange 13, Orange 19, Garden Grove O. Capistrano at Valencia—Although their win over Capistrano in 1948 was the last league victory that they have been able to turn in, Valencia’s Tigers are not expected to do the same when they clash this afternoon. Last week Valencia posted a 31-20 win over California Junior Republic, its first in 13 games. So the Tigers may have found the winning formula—still, they face a Capistrano eleven that has a better record with two wins, a loss, and a tie. Laguna at Brea—Brea, looking for its first win of the season, will more than likely suffer its fourth straight defeat—this time at the hands of the Artists. Laguna Beach has lost only one game (19-0 to Orange) and last year posted a 45-6 triumph over Brea. Moreover, it’s a matter of manpower. Laguna has a 38-man roster. Brea only expected to have 21 for the league opener, but this has now boiled down to 17. Sunset League Orange at Santa Ana—Orange won from Santa Ana last year, the first time that it had been able to do that in over 20 years, and it is wondering if it can do it again. If it does, it will be the first Orange team ever to post two straight victories over a Saint squad. Both schools have had somewhat similar seasons thus far, losing first, and then winning. Orange’s three wins have been more impressive, pointwise, but Santa Ana’s 2-2 record comes from playing stiffer competition. Newport at Fullerton—Is this the one to settle the league title already? That’s what Sunset league observers would have you believe, for they have singled out Newport as the loop’s best, with Fullerton, the defending champ, right behind. Both have fair records—Fullerton 2-1-1; Newport 2-2-0—but both have been running in tough company including South Pasadena, Whittier, St. Anthony’s, and Oxnard. It won’t exactly mean the league title, but the winner will be conceded to have a good preliminary grip. Huntington Beach at Anaheim—This is fully discussed elsewhere. Navy has two newcomers on its 1950 football schedule—Maryland and Northwestern. Capistrano at Valencia — Although their win over Capistrano in 1948 was the last league victory that they have been able to turn in, Valencia's Tigers are not expected to do the same when they clash this afternoon. Last week Valencia posted a 31-20 win over California Junior Republic. Dons Face Tough Foe in Trobabes That's life. Just when the Santa Ana Dons were beginning to show a rebirth of some of the spirit and ability that sent them to the Little Rose Bowl last year, here they come smack dab up against the University of Southern California freshmen tomorrow night at Santa Ana. Ordinarily college freshmen teams are hardly even warmup material for junior college squads. Only this isn't ordinarily. Best Since When The Trobabes have come up with what they consider one of their best squads since even Dean Cromwell cares to remember. They hadn't beaten either a California or a Stanford freshman squad since 1942, but they took care of half of that by pounding the Berkeley Cubs 28-20 last week in the Coliseum. And it wasn't because Cal was weaker. Up the Bay way they say that Pappy Waldorf desig-nated 15 prep stars that he would like to have as 1950 freshmen. He got 14 of them—not exactly something calculated to make a weak squad. Contratto Tough It may be significant to report that the 15th one—the one that managed to get away—is Jim Conratto, the quarterback who was player of the year in the CIF last year while leading Compton to the CIF championship. He currently manages the Trojan split T as a running, passing, and sometimes kicking fool. In back and front of him aren't again. If it does, it will be the first Orange team ever to post two straight victories over a Saint squad. Both schools have had somewhat similar seasons thus far, losing first, and then winning. Orange's three wins have been more impressive, pointwise, but Santa Ana's 2-2 record comes from playing stiffer competition. Newport at Fullerton—Is this the one to settle the league title CONTRATTO Tough It may be significant to report that the 15th one—the one that managed to get away—is Jim Conratto, the quarterback who was player of the year in the CIF last year while leading Compton to the CIF championship. He currently manages the Trojan split T as a running, passing, and sometimes kicking fool. In back and front of him aren't exactly peasants. Tom Nickoloff is practically unturnable at end, and the middle of the line has Chuck Weeks, an all-American high school choice last year at Canton, Ohio. Weeks kicked the four conversions last week. Topped Chaffey There's a Hawaiian back yclept Henry Han who is peachy-keen on pass defense, and another whose name is Koch (pronounced Cook) who passed for one touchdown and ran 92 yards with a kickoff for another. With Contratto playing about half the time the Trojabes squashed Chaffey 38-13. And Santa Ana was just getting started, too. That's life.
