Cities League Sets L.A. Meet
LOS ANGELES—The League of California cities will hold its 52nd Annual Conference in Los Angeles October 23-24-25 at the Biltmore Hotel. More than 1500 delegates will attend representing the 7 incorporated cities in the state.
Civil defense in cities will be the key new problem before the conference. Major General W. Robertson, the recently appointed California State Director of Civil Defense, will be one of the speakers at the Wednesday afternoon October 25 session that will devote solely to the subject of civil defense.
The application to cities of the new civil defense laws passed during the recent special session of the Legislature will be analyzed. More than 200 California cities must have active local disaster programs which are the basis for current pansion and development in civil defense organizations. To make sure that city plans, especially mutual aid, are coordinated with the state program, will be the objective.
California cities will be urged to bring their local civil defense organizations and plans into exertion with the federal and state plans. The league maintains that civil defense is a joint federal state and local responsibility. What cities can do now to protect their citizens, with what they may have available in resources, supplies and equipment is of mediate and timely interest—Governor Warren will be banquet speaker Wednesday evening. Among other speakers Dr. Arthur G. Coons, president Occidental College; Los Angeles Mayor Fletcher Bowron of Angeles; Mayor Elmer E. Robinson of San Francisco; State Senator Randolph Collier; League President Charles A. Pearls Mayor of Anaheim; Richard Graves, League executive director from Berkeley, and Joseph Clark, Chicago, executive director of the Municipal Finance Office.
