Purdue, Notre Dame Topple From Army Led AP Top Ten NEW YORK (AP)—Army’s all-conquering Cadets clung to their position as the nation’s No. 1 college football team today. At the same time, once-invincible Notre Dame dropped out of the top ten for the first time in nearly a decade. Chopping down a strong Michigan eleven last Saturday, 27-6, for their third straight triumph, the unbeaten West Pointers strengthened their first place grip gained a week ago in the Associated Press poll. Coach Earl Blaik's Black Knights, unbeaten in their last 23 starts, drew a total of 124 first place ballots among the 275 voters cast by sportswriters and sportscasters. Down to 11th Notre Dame’s fighting Irish, who a week ago saw their 39-game non-losing skein snapped by Purdue again failed to impress despite their 13-9 victory over Tulane Saturday. That showing helped push the Irish from 10th to 11th place. Notre Dame has finished no lower than ninth since 1941 and almost always has been high up in the running during the season. For the first time in years not a single voter gave Notre Dame a first place ballot. The best the Irish got was a third. Their point total was 295. 24 Straight Wins Army received a total of 2427 points to lead a field that included 47 colleges. Oklahoma wrested second place from Southern Methodist, moving up one notch on the strength of its 14-13 bowed to unheralded Miami university of Florida, 20-14. Miami Climbs Miami vaulted from 37th spot to 14th place with 170 points. The Hurricanes received 14 first place ballots. Other teams to gain No. 1 recognition included Maryland (5), Clemson (4); Cornell (2), and Wake Forest (1). So: CALIFORNIA-SC inclined to think that this game of the best games I have seen in the Coliseum. Right I'd rank: it behind SC-Notre Dame of 1948 and Ram-Cardinal of last year. Although it was scoring, it was a real thriller on the way. Because of Cal's missed conversion, SC was a threat on every go into the lead—some which it eventually did—of course, Ed Demirjian's passing at the end was being designed to make theators passive. Midnight last night was the deadline for the shifting of minor league players to the majors or to any other minor league club until the second day of the minor leagues meetings on Dec. 7. The annual draft of minor league players by the majors will take place Dec. 4-5. Three teams, the world champion New York Yankees, the Brooklyn Dodgers, and the Cleveland Indians, pulled last hour deals with their minor league affiliations. The Yanks brought up eight players, Brooklyn four, and Cleveland one. New York recalled first baseman Fenton Mole from Portland of the Pacific Coast league. The Dodgers obtained the contract of outfielder Bill Sharman, former star basketball player from the University of Southern California. He prepped at Elmira in the Eastern league. He is a bonus baby. Downs. But it's probably a pretty healthy attitude at that. Though topped, they are hardly crushed—through for the year. It is a good bet that in Covina the Colonists faced their toughest opponent until they meet Santa Barbara in their closing game on Thanksgiving. No excuse is given for the loss to the Colts and none is needed—they were simply bigger, faster and more numerous. Or as one was expressed it: "It looks as though their backfield and our line weights are just about even. By that I mean that their four backs weigh as much as our seven linemen." Clemson Only Major College Team not Scored on in 1950 NEW YORK (AP)—Clemson college is the only major college football team unscored on this season, after Cincinnati pushed over a touchdown against Kentucky last week. Among the smaller schools, Denison of Granville, Ohio, has won three games without permitting an opponent to score. Clemson has beaten Presbyterian, 55-0, Missouri, 34-0, and North Carolina State, 27-0. Denison has defeated Washington and Jefferson 20-0, Otterbein, 26-0, and Wooster, 46-0. Kentucky went through four games before having its goal line crossed as the Wildcats beat Cincinnati Saturday night, 41-7. Kentucky previously beat North Texas State, 25-0, Louisiana State, 14-0, Mississippi, 27-0, and Dayton, 20-0. Clemson and Denison have a long way to go, however, for a record. Tennessee went 15 games without being scored on in 1938 and 1939. Tennessee shut out the last five opponents in 1938, went through 10 games in 1939 without giving up a score, and then was beaten in the Jan. 1, 1940 Rose Bowl game by Southern California, 14-0. Jake Mintz, Charles manager, made the announcement yesterday. Charles won the NBA title in June, 1949, when he defeated Jersey Joe Walcott. He was recognized in all states but New York, and there were some who refused to recognize him at all. Not while Joe Louis was around, they said. But Charles wrapped the Brown Bomber and earned national recognition. So from now on he will pick up the champion's share of the purse, which will be 42½ per cent this time. Barone, a native of Syracuse, N.Y., will get 17½ per cent, plus an unexpected crack at the biggest prize of all.
