Colonists Defend La Palma Gridiron Against Covina in First Home Game
Generally speaking, it’s always pretty easy to know when a coach is really worried about his next opponent—he starts messing around with his defense.
Well, that’s just about what the story has been during Colonist practice sessions this past week. Clare Van Hoorebeke, anticipating much more trouble than he has received from either of his first two opponents, has spent an amazing amount of time and effort in an attempt to whip up something to stop Covina's single wing attack when it comes into La Palma Park to open the Anaheim home season at 7:30 tonight.
In both coaching and in personnel, Covina, which has won two games and tied another, is expected to show considerably more class than the Colonists have yet seen in their first two clashes.
Single Wing Team
While the Colonists have defended their goal line successfully twice against T formation attacks, they have not yet had to face the power that is inherently present in the single wing. And from scouting reports turned in by Bill Hicks, the Covinans have the players to make the formation click.
Of this one thing the Colonists may be sure—no lead, no matter how late in the game, will be out of reach of the visitors. After blanking Colton 28-0 in its opener, Covina tied Monrovia 13-13. In this contest, however, Covina was behind, 13-0, with only three minutes left.
Good Kicking
Then last week it entered the fourth quarter, trailing Pomona 14-7, and went on to win 28-14. These scores also show that Covina,

Offensive Dive Keith, a perfectionist almost exclusively sive tactics. He seek of last week's performance of the Colonists were a gather enough drive enemy territory until was almost completed.
This has involved running and rerunning plays and the intro few news ones into. And the new ones be learned exactly as them. At one time week, the Bs ran over and over for the of a half-hour before satisfied with it.

The college campagin really bucks up momentum this week with major conference clashes vying with intersectionsal skirmishes or the attention of the gridiron tourmaline. The activities actually start under way tonight with Illinois and UCLA, the 1947 Rose Bowl principals, tangling at Los Angeles.
Michigan's Wolverines are expected to be keyed to the gills for the meeting with Army and to have their best backfield man, Nick Ortmann, in shape for the first time since the opening game.
Texas Favored
The Cadets, who boast a racehorseback field, never have lost the Wolverines. Last year they mapped a 25-game Michigan winning streak, 21-7.

Yanks Nip 49ers To Take NFL Lead
NEW YORK (F)—Thanks to Buddy Young and George Ratterman, the New York Yankees are in first place in the National Division of the National Football league today.
Young sprinted 15 yards in the last five minutes to give the Yanks a 29-24 victory over the winless San Francisco 49ers last night before 6000 fans in the big Yankee stadium. Rain held the crowd down.
The victory enabled the Yanks to break a tie for the top run with the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions who were idle.
Until Young broke away it appeared the Frankie Albert-steered 49ers would win their first game of the year. The 49ers led 24 to 15 with Albert the main reason. Albert threw two touchdown passes and connected on 21 out of 33 attempts for 254 yards.
But Ratterman, who wound up with three touchdown passes while completing 18 out of 35 heaves that were good for 280 yards, started to work. He tossed four straight passes to make it 24-22.
Young's payoff score came after George Tallferro returned a punt to the 49ers 40 yard line. Ratterman didn't throw a pass as the Yanks ate up the remaining distance in five plays.

Of this one thing the Colonists may be sure—no lead, no matter how late in the game, will be out of reach of the visitors. After blanking Colton 28-0 in its opener, Covina tied Monrovia 13-13. In this contest, however, Covina was behind 13-0, with only three minutes left.
Good Kicking
Then last week it entered the fourth quarter, trailing Pomona. 14-7, and went on to win 28-14. These scores also show that Covina has been pretty consistent in kicking conversions with nine out of ten. The Colonists, meanwhile, have been just as consistent in missing. With eight touchdowns, they have converted once. In a close one, this could hurt.
Van Hoorebeke has laid special emphasis on pass defense this week, although only five passes have been completed against the Colonists in the first two games. Only 23 have been thrown, however, an amazingly low number considering that both opponents were behind nearly all of the time.
No Repeat
Van Hoorebeke is taking no chances on the added protection that the single wing gives a passer. While Covina has moved principally on the ground, it has shown that it can throw. One of the scores in the Monrovia game came from a last-minute desperation heave. Van Hoorebeke wants no such repetition tonight.
The Colonists appear to be in fairly good physical shape for tonight's home opener. A few minor leg ailments have hampered a few of the players during the week, but they should be ready to go tonight. Only Charles Lechuga, starting right tackle, will sit it out. He suffered a knee injury at Citrus and was pronounced through for the rest of the season.
Holve or Herrera
Lechuga, who had capably filled the gap on both offense and defense, will probably be replaced in the starting line by Jim Holve, although Ed Herrera, who has been used almost exclusively for kicking of chores, will probably alternate freely with him.
With the great emphasis on defensive sharpening up and on extensive skull sessions, the Colonists have spent little time on offensivie maneuvers this week, and they have entirely skipped any rough stuff. It is doubtful that they will have any new stuff to spring on Covina tonight, but they might not need any. What they have been plenty so far.
Will it be ample for tonight?

Next Field Day
Set for Dec. 7
Because its field day on Wednesday was such an outstanding success, the Anaheim Golf Association has decided to do it all over again on Dec. 7 at Willowick.
It also set that as the date for the election of new officers.
More than 60 golfers took part in Wednesday's activities, with J. W. Anderson carrying off the main booty — the Troutman-Schultz perpetual trophy — with a low net score of 61.
Other principal prize winners include Bob Jaynes, Carl Lemke, and George Miller.
As is the usual custom, the field day was followed by a steak dinner in the clubhouse.
a Gridiron Game
Bs Try Comeback In Prelim Game
Coach Sam Keith has about the same taste for defeats that most persons have for fried fish heads. As a consequence, he was a bit removed from elation when his Bs blew a 13-0 decision to Citrus last week, and work on Clayes field this week has moved along at a rather rugged clip.
Just what dividends this intensive practice will earn will be shown tonight when the Colonist Bs open the local season in the preliminary game with Covina. Kickoff time is 6 p.m.
Offensive Drills
Keith, a perfectionist, has drilled almost exclusively on offensive tactics. He seeks no repeat of last week's performance when the Colonists were not able to gather enough drive to get into enemy territory until the first half was almost completed.
This has involved extensive running and rerunning of the old plays and the introduction of a few news ones into the attack. And the new ones have had to be learned exactly as Keith wants them. At one time during the week, the Bs ran a single play over and over for the better part of a half-hour before Keith was satisfied with it.
Hides It
He absolutely refuses to OK a play as long as he can still see the ball, and Bill Walker, who happened to do the carrying on this end, only one of the other half-dozen Orange county teams—Tustin—will engage in gridiron exercise.
A single game is scheduled for tomorrow night when Corona plays host to Orange high school.
Most Orange Teams Take It Easy
For most teams it's the last week of non-conference affairs, and some of them are taking advantage of the week before league openers to sit out activity entirely. Although all of the Sunset league teams are slated to see action of some sort over the weekend, only one of the other half-dozen Orange county teams—Tustin—will engage in gridiron exercise.
A single game is scheduled for tomorrow night when Corona plays host to Orange high school.
Hides It
He absolutely refuses to OK a play as long as he can still see the ball, and Bill Walker, who happened to do the carrying on this particular play, just about had to stuff the thing up his sleeve before Keith approved it.
Finicky as this may sound, it resolves from the fact that last week's ball handling in the T was so undeceptive that the Colohists resorted to running from the unfamiliar short punt in the second half.
Defensively, the Colonists still appear pretty sound. After being shoved around the gridiron during the first two periods last week, they stiffened enough in the final half to hold Citrus almost equal in total yardage for the night's work.
Ball May Miss
If Covina follows the example of its varsity and uses the single wing, it may be a break for the Colonists. Against the Bell Gardens single wing two weeks ago, the Colonists yielded only 50 yards, both running and passing, and held the Lancers to three first downs—one of those earned on penalties.
The running star of that game—halfback Jim Ball—who was expected to be back in the lineup tonight, after missing last Friday's game, may not make it. Although present at all of the week's practices, he did not suit up and underwent none of the more strenuous stuff.
If he sits it out, his place will be taken by either Aaron Peralta, who replaced him last week, or Dick Shields.
