Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER DOGONKE—Merrill Royer's dog, Spot, doesn't care for the helicopter mail planes that invade the privacy of his back yard in ANAHEIM. He protests only as a dog can. He barks loud and fiercely at the strange flying eggbeater on its three trips to the ANAHEIM heliport. It must be his dog-like intuition that tells him when a helicopter is within miles of ANAHEIM. On some days he hears the flying eggbeater that goes over Fullerton on its way to pick up the Riverside and inland mail. Both Ellis Ackerman who meets the copter with Fullerton mail and George Jackson who delivers the ANAHEIM mail pouch have gotten to know Spot and are sometimes amused at the little dog for showing disdain in a way only a dog can. PROFILES—Wesley Visel is an ANAHEIMER who must be given a world of credit for choosing a profession whereby he can help his fellows rather than one where he might gain riches. Though the teaching profession offers much, the personable ANAHEIMER has given more. Such men as Wesley Visel are truly servants of humanity when they choose to help others—especially youngsters. ANAHEIMERS — Henry Bard and Herb Middleton are a couple of experts when it comes to using the rod and the reel. They have been showing Kenny Eckels just how it is done... Joe Muro, the one-time Placentia baseballer, has become a sheetmetal expert since he left the service. He was in ANAHEIM to do a highly technical job... Looks like Rod Brastad may give Horace Heldt a little competition. Entries for the Hallowe'en festival talent show are pouring in... Big Don Cram, the genial personnel manager and stenotyper, is passing out the coegars again. The popular ANAHEIMER became a papa again... Jo An Burdick is the ANAHEIM Lions' Queen candidate and Jo Anne Wood is the Kiwanis-YMCA Queen candidate... With such a dazzling array of ANAHEIM beauty, it is only natural that a guy should get confused... Gilbert McGuffy, one of the best shine experts, who held forth at the Office Barber shop, has left ANAHEIM to ply his trade in Santa Ana. Apparently the going got a leetle too rough hereabouts... DOGS—ANAHEIM is a dog's paradise. An ANAHEIM dog has all the freedom most city dogs do not. A dog's life in ANAHEIM is free and easy. He is at liberty to roam the streets; inspect light posts, trees and fire hydrants; and knock over garbage cans. In other towns dogs are hampered by ordinances keeping them in their own back yards. Naturally, in ANAHEIM the dog mortality rate is high. Auto brakes aren't made that can stop a car from running over a frisky pet. SESMA CLEANERS 130 ELM - ANAHEIM Will Be Closed Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6-7 IN HONOR OF THE MEMORY OF ENSIGN ARTHUR J. SESMA Truman Tans on Chesapeake Bay ABOARD YACHT COMMANDER (UP)—President Truman, sporting an autumn tan, scheduled a 40-mile leisurely cruise today across Chesapeake Bay. The vacationing president had the yacht Williamsburg pointed for Tangier Sound off the eastern shore after docking overnight at Yorktown, Va., where he went ashore briefly for the first time since leaving Washington last Saturday. Shortly after the Williamsburg tied up late yesterday at Yorktown, historic site of the British surrender in the revolutionary war, Mr. Truman left the ship and walked about 100 yards in a chill wind to visit with newsmen covering his trip. The president acquired his tan sunbathing Monday and Tuesday under perfect Indian summer skies. But the sky was heavily overcast yesterday and there was a stiff wind which kicked up a lot of whitecaps. On yesterday's trip down the bay the president listened over the radio to the first part of the world series baseball game, then went to work on official papers flown in from Washington. Later he got word that he had won a staff pool on the outcome of the game. Mr. Truman had drawn the New York Yankees in the fourth, when they made the only score of the game. The prize said press secretary Charles G. Ross, was "just a small one." He declined to name it. CROW GETS A RIDE FREEPORT, Ill. — (UP) — When young Frank Burt rides his bicycle, he carries an extra passenger on the handlebars. The cargo is his pet crow, "Jet." Zamperini carries, he says, a message of peace and brotherly love. Tracing his one-time captors and converting them to Christianity will be part of his duties, Zamperini says, during a two-month tour of Japan under the auspices of the International Youth for Christ movement. Jr. Chamber Hears Van Hoorebeke The inside on the 1950 Colonist grid machine headed this bill last night at the regular meeting of the Anaheim Junior Chamber of Commerce at Mother's Kitchen. Speaker of the evening was Clare Van Hoorebeke, new varsity football coach at Anaheim high school. Progress is being made, the mentor told chambermen, the colonists are adapting themselves to the information with reasonable speed. However, he said, there is a deplorable lack of spirit both within the team itself and among its backers. This, Van Hoorebeke avowed must be remedied. The success of the current grid campaign demands it. During his talk with chambermen, the AUHS coach also stressed the need for pre-high school training for Anaheim athletes, citing the woes of the coach who finds himself faced with incoming high schoolers pretty much ignorant of the intricacies of football as well as other sports. Ikes Consider Buffalo Feed The Anaheim chapter of the Ikeak Walton League at its meeting last night discussed its pending buffalo meat dinner to be held at the Community Center, Olive, on December 6.
