Defense Weaker
Defense, the other consideration, is an entirely unknown factor. During intrasquad scrimmages, the defenders have looked pretty shabby, but it is hard to place the cause for this during such scrimmages—is it a weak defense, or merely a powerful offense?
Ball Gardens should supply an answer.
As for Bell Gardens itself, Coach Latimer is far from optimistic about reversing last year's 20-13 setback. From his 1949 squad he has only six returning lettermen, while merely four others have

That's what the second place teams in the major league pennant races are chanting today. This is especially true of the beleagured Brooklyn Dodgers, and to a lesser extent, the Detroit Tigers.
Rain threatens to wash out what little chance the Dodgers and Tigers have to catch the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees, respectively.
The Phillies in the National and the Yanks in the American assured themselves yesterday of finishing in no worse than a tie for the pennants in their respective leagues.
Brooklyn, in order to tie the Phillies, must beat Boston twice today and the Phillies on Saturday and Sunday. The Phils are idle today and can clinch if the Dodgers split. Detroit, in order to tie the Yanks, must win all three of their remaining games against Cleveland while the Yanks, idle today, drop single games to the Boston Red Sox on Saturday and Sunday.
However, if the games are rained out, the Dodgers will be washed out of the pennant picture since Boston is scheduled to play the New York Giants over the weekend while the Dodgers entertain Philadelphia.
The season ends Sunday October 1 and no postseason games are allowed to play off rained out regular season games. So if the Dodgers are rained out it will be impossible for Brooklyn to wind up the race in a dead heat as they have no open dates left.
County HS Team Face Full Slate
Besides tonight's Anaheim Gardens tussle, 10 other school games involving O'Connor county teams are scheduled for week-end.
Most of them are inter-coach games, but two Orange co-teams are matched against other tonight when Garden City invades the field of once-brown.
Hopes of any of the team an unbeaten season look more slim, since five of the coudezen teams have already defeat in the yet-young se-Topped the first time out Santa Ana, Orange, Hunting Beach, Valencia and Capistrano.
The week-end's schedule:

FJC-Vike Tilt Doubly Crucial
Right!—the season's only two weeks old, but that's a going to be a mighty important game that they're playing tonight in Fullerton.
At stake are:
1. A possible road to the Little Rose Bowl.
2. A comparison between Fullerton and Santa Ana for the Turkey Day tussle.
Long Beach, which invades the Hornets' nest tonight will be the measuring stick for the second of the possibilities. Conquerors of Santa Ana by a 20-7 count last week, the Vikings are just about an even bet against a Fullerton squad that has not really yet been extended in its two games to date.
As for the late December date in Pasadena, early contests so far have shown Long Beach and Fullerton to be among the contenders. Others include East Los Angeles and Compton, the perennial candidate.
Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
