About 100 tons of the fruit are processed at the Highway 101 plant each year. (P) — Parachutists have been dropped to begin rescue operations for 10 United States airmen whose B-50 bomber crashed Thursday in Labrador wilderness, the Fort Pepperell Air Base reported today. The stricken bomber was discovered last night after being missing for three days, and a U.S. Air Force team immediately took steps to evacuate the men by helicopter. The helicopter will move the men to a nearby lake, where a Canadian amphibian plane will pick them up. AUHS Students To be Airborne Anaheim High school teachers will be up in the air October 2. On that date, Assemblyman Earl Stanley's airplane will be available to them for flying instruction in connection with teachers institute studies, which have been expanded to include actual flying as well as the theory of flight. Yesterday, 30 Fullerton High school teachers took to the air in Stanley's plane, which was flown by Pilot Perry Smith of Newport Beach from Fullerton municipal airport. Following their flight October 2, Anaheim teachers will have classroom instruction on aeronautics on October 3. Koinforcements poured into the Inchon beachhead and 2400 airborne troops sped from Japan by ship dropped on Kimpo airfield northwest of Seoul. For the 90th straight day, Far East Air Force and Royal Australian Air Force planes hit North Korean targets, B-29s and light bombers and fighters hit almost 100 targets in a record 728 sorties. In Washington, U. S. Defense Department observers said it was too early to predict when Allied victory in Korea might come, but the use of airborne troops indicated a massing of swift-striking mobile strength to be coordinated in the final annihilation blow. le-Known But Versatile Papaya Launches Promising Business for Local Processor Food, Medicinal Values Found in Tropical Fruit "The Princess Papuli Has Plenty Papaya and She Loves to Give It Away..." goes a song that has achieved considerable popularity lately. In Anaheim, Kurt Koesel, owner of Koesel's Juice and Papaya House, Manchester at 101 Highway, has plenty papaya, but he doesn't give it away, he sells it, in a variety of forms, and thereby lays claim to the title of one of Anaheim's more unique businessmen. Insofar as Koesel knows, his papaya processing plant is the only one of its kind on the west coast—possibly in the entire country. Papaya is a tropical fruit, as yet little known in this country. Classed as a tree melon, it grows, ooth wild and cultivated, in Mexico, Hawaii, the Philippines, South America and similar climes. Gourd-shaped, it varies from the size of a pear up to that of a small watermelon. Like a lot of exotic fruits, it has a taste that defies accurate description. A sampling of the orange-yellow colored fruit draws comparison with peaches, cantaloupes, pears, guavas, to name just a few. Actually it's a little like all of these and not very much like any one of them. Varied Use Where papaya is found deter sleeps with the native workmen during the picking seasons. How Koesel got into the papaya business is a story in itself. In a nutshell: some years ago Koesel found himself to be a very sick man and turned to papaya, which he had read about while a medical student at the university. years building up his presentation. He has supervised the sign and construction of a equipment used in the preparation of the various papaya products. Local Sales The bulk of his sales are local basis—people who store Gourd-shaped, it varies from the size of a pear up to that of a small watermelon. Like a lot of exotic fruits, it has a taste that defies accurate description. A sampling of the orange-yellow colored fruit draws comparison with peaches, cantaloupes, pears, guavas, to name just a few. Actually it's a little like all of these and not very much like any one of them. Varied Use Where papaya is found determines how it is used. For the natives in the areas where it grows, papaya is versatility incarnate. In the first place, it serves as a food, eaten both raw and cooked. Secondly, and perhaps more important, it serves nativess as a medicinal aid particularly for digestive troubles. For centuries they have fought dyspepsia and gastritis with their "golden fruit." They also use it externally for cleansing wounds and clotting flowing blood. In addition, they use the fruit, as well as papaya tree leaves for tenderizing meat. Bleaching cloth is another use. In this country, papaya promises to follow a similar course of uses, according to Koesel. Right now he concentrates activities at the Manchester plant on preparation of papaya for medicinal and food purposes, primarily. Koesel says doctors find more and more that papaya, through the action of an enzyme called papain, is helpful in the treatment of stomach and digestive disorders such as dyspepsia and the like. Some claim it is superior to pepsin for these purposes, according to Koesel. The papain enzyme promises to be of considerable aid in the treatment of ulcers and stomach cancer, he adds. As a food, Koesel has found many forms for his tropical import. He sells it raw for salads, and other cold dishes. He makes ice cream of it. He extracts the juice and sells that. He makes papaya candy. He sells it frozen sliced and diced. He renders it into a powder for tenderizing meat and flavoring. He prepares a papaya puree which forms the base for other drinks and flavor concentrates. There are variations of the above products. And there are new papaya products in the planning stages. Plant Facilities All this activity requires considerable plant facilities and that's what Koesel has at his Manchester blvd. operation. He hesitates to cite a definite figure but indicates that it represents "many thousands of dollars" in equipment. Plant Facilities All this activity requires considerable plant facilities and that's what Koesel has at his Manchester blvd. operation. He hesitates to cite a definite figure but indicates that it represents "many thousands of dollars" in equipment. Seeing is believing. The afterpart of the Papaya House is crammed with specially-designed equipment. It is a maze of pipes, vats, drums, whirlers, strainers. The equipment is all stainless steel, Koesel points out, to insure the absolute in sanitary handling. What happens to the fruit when its goes through the processing machinery is of course a trade secret—the result of 12 years experimentation. Suffice it to say that raw fruit emerges at the opposite end of the production line as individually, seeds, pulp and juice. These components, now separated, are taken for processing into the various end products. An idea of the size of Koesel's operation is gained from the amount of fresh papaya that goes through his plant. The combined import from Mexico and Hawaii, Koesel's two growing areas, is nearly 100 tons per year. With growing centers and processing center as far apart as they are, Koesel finds himself much on the go. He has to be on the spot, either in Mexico or Hawaii, when picking and shipping operations are in progress each year. Heavy Schedule This means four to six months a year flying from Anaheim to Oahu to Vera Cruz and back to Anaheim. The papaya groves are located back in relatively wild areas in each of the two locations which means that Koesel roughs it during his visits.
