Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER ANAHEIM ITEMS — Nick Wingert and Wayne Held, ANAHEIM sportsmen, are looking forward to the Isaac Walton League state convention at Long Beach. Speaking of ANAHEIM sportsmen, Ray J. Mahoney is a true sport who believes in giving the other fellow an even break—even if it is a business competitor. That’s what makes ANAHEIM the city it is. Ansel Schoonover is studying animal husbandry at Cal Poly this year. Paul Lenz is at the San Luis Obispo educational foundation studying fruit crops. He’s the lad who picked up a couple of scholarships. Carl Kohlenberger is being congratulated. He became a great, great grandfather last week when Craig Lamar Jennings was born at Pomona. Mrs. Jenkins is the daughter of Walter C. Kohlenberger of North ANAHEIM (Fullerton, t’you, suh). Don’t you believe it! Warren Ashleigh may be the Big Boss and the chief whip cracker in the YMCA fund-raising campaign, but what married man is the boss of his domain? Walt Taylor? Frank Kellogg? Bob Quast? Paul Demaree? Every married man knows how to take orders, because he knows who’s boss—t’ll’le woman, a'course... Stock Market NEW YORK (AP) — Radio television and auto stocks pulled the market out of a decline today. TV issues were in demand through the day when the rest of the market showed losses running to around $1 a share. Autos made a late but strong start. Gains in the two groups ranged to an extreme of about $3 a share. Improvement elsewhere was limited mainly to less than $1 a share and there were still a good handful of stocks in the minus column. Trading was fast from the start with turnover touching a rate of around 2,300,000 shares for the full day. PROFILES — Wilbert Bonney has made an outstanding contribution to the cultural welfare of ANAHEIM. As principal of the Fremond school, Wilbert, is doing an outstanding job as an educator, teacher, and friend of ANAHEIM's growing youth. Modern education presents many problems and Bonney is a man ANAHEIM can be justly proud of. The jovial, good-natured redhead has the friendly personality that can win friends and influence people . . . MEMO—Monday, September 18, is the day when every thoughtful ANAHEIMER will go to the polls and do his duty to assure ANAHEIM and its environs an adequate sewer system. ANAHEIM VIGNETTE—Denver Garner may be a poor man's "Speed" Riggs. The Fullerton junior college instructor recently was the spieler at one of those fancy dude society auctions in San Fernando Valley. Another claim to fame is that he is a ROTARIANS TO HEAR AUTO CLUB MAN "How Are Your Public Relations?" is the title of an address to be delivered before the Anaheim Rotary Club at a meeting to be held September 18th, 12:10 Elks Club, by Bert Stewart, Jr., field secretary of the National Automobile Club. Stewart, who has a wide reputation as a public speaker, will be introduced by Ray Alden who will preside as chairman of the day. With a background of eight years newspaper experience and more than a decade of work in the field of public relations, Stewart will reveal some modern principles for business success through the application of certain basic fundamentals of personal public relations, and pack an abundance of business truths, in capsule form, into his discussion. Sermons Named by Church of Christ "What Is Your Life?" and "Three Views of Life" will be the topics of the sermons to be delivered this Sunday by the Rev. James T. Dixon at the Church of Christ, Sycamore and Olive sts. The following schedule of services was also announced: Sunday school, 10-11 a.m.; morning service, 11-12 a.m.; evening service, 7:30-8:30 p.m.; mid-week service, 7:30-8:30 p.m.; Thursday. ANAHEIM VIGNETTE—Denver Garner may be a poor man's "Speed" Riggs. The Fullerton junior college instructor recently was the spieler at one of those fancy dude society auctions in San Fernando Valley. Another claim to fame is that he is, a neighbor of Walker Merrifield, the ANAHEIM trucker and hossman. A few years ago he started an auction yard in Buena Park. He is really well known in and out of the horsey set, but last June he endeared himself to a lot of ANAHEIMERS by being a humanitarian above all else. He had the misfortune of running over a pup belonging to Ralph and Mary Rouland. He knew what the loss of a pup meant. He inquired, found out who owned the pooch that strayed into the street. But the incident wasn't closed — Garner searched for another pup with similar markings to replace the one he had unavoidably run over. A week later he returned with the dog. Since that day in June, Denver Garner has paid several visits to the Roulands to see if the replacement was all right. Mary Rouland says, "He (Garner) is a perfect gentleman who is well fitted for his job because he has the compassion of a great humanitarian." It is nice to know that such men aid and guide the destinies of many ANAHEIM collegiate at Fullerton. The world would, indeed, be a better place in which to live if there were more men like Denver Garner. REMEMBER — Though your acquaintances may be many, real friends are few and far between. Community Chest (Continued From Page 1) Uses are scheduled to begin October 15. At least 200 workers are expected to take part in the 1950 campaign. Campaign chairman has not been designated as yet. However, the administrative recruits have signed. They include Cromer and Hoskins of the budget committee; Bert Arnold, publicity; and Mrs. C. H. Lawrence, secretary. Mrs. James Schneider, Oscar Renner and Joe Sowder were appointed as a committee to obtain a general campaign chairman. They will report on their activities next Thursday. Hoskins stressed last night that Anaheimers working in other cities who contribute to Chest drives in those cities can have their funds earmarked for the Anaheim Community Chest. WELL ENOUGH NOT LET ALONE LOS ANGELES (AP)—On screen or off now, he'll just be plain John Derek. The young actor had the name legalized yesterday, and the court also changed the name for his wife and their five-month old son. Derek had the switch made from Derek Dullivan Harris, a more Hollywood-sounding moniker at that. ATTENTION VOTERS: “If the standard of living in Orange county is to be maintained, the proposed Magnolia sewer trunk is a must. This line will relieve the unbelievably congested condition of the present trunk and will make it possible for additional residential and industrial areas to develop. Without the new trunk line, however, further expansion will not be possible.” CHESTER G. GILLESPIE, CONSULTING ENGINEER FOR J. O. S. IF YOU VOTE NO THIS: AT THE RIGHT IS AN UNRETOUCHED PHOTOGRAPH taken at the corner of Edwards Street and Commonwealth Avenue in Fullerton. In the foreground is a sewer manhole overflowing, filling the street with untreated sewage. This could have been a picture of Anaheim, Orange, LaHabra, Buena Park, Placentia, or Garden Grove. Medical authorities in the county agree this is a definite threat to our health and the future well-being of our children. IF YOU VOTE YES THIS: HERE IS A RETOUCHED PHOTOGRAPH of the same corner showing the way it can look if you as a qualified voter vote "yes" for the Magnolia sewer trunk on Monday, September 18th. County engineers assure us that with the Magnolia sewer line will come residential and industrial expansion and that your property value may stay at its present level or increase rather than decline. The Magnolia line will serve the communities involved for the next 40 years.
