Yankee 'Old Pros' Again Produce in Clutch Games By RALPH RCDEN Associated Press Sports Writer A couple of old pros, Joe DiMaggio and Johnny Mize, are nobly carrying on the New York Yankee tradition of winning the clutch games. These two veterans, both in their 12th seasons, are supplying the power that has propelled the Yankees to the front in the ding-dong American League pennant fight. DiMaggio and Mize powered timely home runs yesterday to lead the bombers to a 7-5 victory over the Tigers in the opening game of their vital three-game series at Detroit. The "jump" triumph moved the world champions to the head of the class with a half-game edge. Browns Still Hot The Tigers fell back to second while the surge of the Boston Red Sox was derailed temporarily in St. Louis by the upstart Browns, who now have won eight in a row. The Browns polished off Tom Yawkey's gold-plated boys, 6-3. The Sox now trail by two games. Hal Newhouser started against the Yanks' Vie Raschi yesterday. Detroit plucked Raschi for four runs in the opening inning as they put together three singles, three walks and a fly ball, but then the old pros started to operate. DiMaggio led off the second inning with his 20th homer. Hank Bauer walked, Mize followed with his 20th round-tripper, and the Yanks were back in business. They tied the score at 4-6 with a run in the third and pushed two more across in the fourth to take the lead for keeps. Starr Wins Dick Starr, a former Yankee, stunned the Red Sox with a neat seven hitter under the lights at St. Louis. The Browns broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the sixth inning and were never headed. Dick Kokos began the winning rally with a double. Hank Arft singled Kokos home but was thrown out attempting to reach second. George Stirnweiss, another former Yankee, doubled and went game in Philadelphia. Wilie Jones singled home Ed Waitkus from third base with two out in the ninth inning to win the game. The Phils' lead, however, was reduced to six games as the runner-up Brooklyn Dodgers took a doubleheader from the Cincinnati Reds, 6-3 and 5-2. Home runs by Gil Hodges, Billy Cox, Bruce Edwards and Carl Furillo featured the first-game victory. Preacher Roe gained his 18th victory in the finale but Ralph Eranca saved the game in the ninth by striking out two pinch-. It would easily be a home run—four Out Once Again In First Division By JIM HUBBART Associated Press Sports Writer The Seattle Rainiers are out of the Pacific Cosat league's first division today, following a night of hostilities in which all four games were decided in the last inning. The heroes of the evening were Franlie Kelleher of Hollywood, Harvey Storey of San Diego, Frank Austin of Portland, and Jim Westlake of San Francisco. Kelleher broke up a pitching duel between Hollywood's Ben Wade and Sacramento's Glen Elliott. Also in the ninth, Kelleher drilled his 30th home run of the year to give the Stars a 1 to 4 victory over the Solons. It was the fourth game in Sacramento this season that Kelleher has broken up with a homer. Padres Gain Austin produced the most dramatic wallop of all. His round-tripper broke up an 11 inning game at Los Angeles and gave Portland a 4 to 2 victory. Austin connected on the first pitch with one away and one on. It was Portland's sixth straight win and loss No. 5 for the Angels. The attendance slump continued unabased last night. Los Angeles, the league's largest city, drew only 802 customers to Wrigley field. Sacramento had 837, San Francisco: 1140. San Diego led the largest turnout with 4316 fans. What with football coming up, however, indications are that the situation will get worse before it gets better. What's the lowest attendance on record? Well, in 1905 only one man showed up for a Portland-Oakland game. Nobody ever bothered to get his name. Duseks to Test Wagner-Davis Duo The nationally famed, but notorious ring ruffians, Ernie and Emil Dusck, leaders of the wrestling "riot squad" from Omaha, Neb., will move into the Orange County Athletic club ring Monday night as tag team "firemen." Granted, there are still a few more months of playing to come, but it will just be going through the motions, more or less, since tomorrow's victor between the Eagles and the Cleveland Browns will be an overwhelming favorite to cop the title. Actually, it's not quite that simple. The American conference, of which these teams are members, is the strong one this year, making it no cinch for anyone in that division to look forward to a season with less than three defeats. Off the showing of the 13 teams in the exhibition season, these teams are now rated: 1. Cleveland (797), 2. Washington (775), 3. Philadelphia (758), 4. Yankees (746), 5. Bears (736), 6. Giants (709) and Pittsburgh (709), 8. Green Bay (680), 9. Detroit (679), 10. Los Angeles (676), 11. San Francisco (636), 12. Cardinals (633), 13. Baltimore (618). Note the grouping of the divisions. The upper half consists of five American division clubs and two national. Only one American division representative is present in the lower half of the ratings. All of which leads to the predictions for this week-end: Cleveland over Philadelphia; Bears over Los Angeles; Green Bay over Detroit; Glants over Pittsburgh; Yanks over San Francisco; Washington over Baltimore. All games, except the last, should be very close. College activity is still very sparse, but here—for what they're worth—are the opening week's picks: Drake over Denver; Kansas State over Baker; Tulsa over McMurry; Kentucky over North Texas State; Wyoming over Montana State; Utah State over Nevada. Geiger did run it gingerly end with the wrist. Run in situations such as this kept for over-the-fence hot Geiger's blow will go down long single. Altheide meanwhile had plettially stifled C. of C after first inning tally, pitching to 24 batters in the last eight fright Only Ed Baker, who walked second, and Dickinson, who lected the lone safety in eighth, reached first, and were cut down by Adolph-Willie hold while attempting to second. Scratch Blow Altheide might well have no-hitter all the way, Dick getting only the scratchiest of hit. He hit one of those on 100,000 shots right off the end his bat. The ball started at Geiger, then hit the glove and bounced off at almost a angle. Dickenson easily read first without the ball even rolling the outfield grass. Church of Christ's lone run of the unearned variety. Means opened the game with a group to short and was safe on Liebe's wide throw. He moved second on a sacrifice, stole tape and scooted home when Baker dropped a bunt down first base line. Tie It Up But the Lutherans bounced back to knot it in the second. Opened with a single to center moved to third when Bob Henderson drove a double into right. Altheide lofted to center, L scoring and Hedrick racing third after the catch. Fur damage was averted, however when Meadows made an "impossible" catch of Westerhold's bluer in short left and then doubled Hedrick off third. Now, however, come the Duseks, rated the toughest tandem in wrestling, to see whether Davis and Wagner can take it—how much and for how long without yelling "uncle." In Win Over Church of Christ Straight Church League Title This doesn’t come exactly in the way of news, but Grace Lutheran tucked away the Church league championship last night by bouncing Church of Christ 2-1 in nine innings at City Park. Actually, it’s an old, old story. It marks the fourth straight year that Grace Lutheran has taken the title. Art Altheide and Bill Geiger are the heroes last night. Altheide pitched a no-hit game over regulation distance and allowed only one hit during the composite nine frames. Geiger’s hit the bottom of the ninth senturb Helnze home with the winning tally. Early Scores Church of Christ opened the ring its first time up, but Grace Lutheran tied it in the bottom of the second at 1-1—and Art Altheide and Lloyd Lichtenauer proceeded to dole out goosees until the fatal ninth. Helnze, first up, led off with a second hit of the night, a shot short that Ken Meadows did not handle. With the sacrifice obviously on, Del Martens tied down the first base line, Lichtenwalter tossed wildly first Martens reaching second the arbor and Heinze going to third when Lichtenwalter resorted to a dubious strategy. With Geiger who has pounded Church of St. Paul pitching at a 382 clip this season, he chose to pitch him rather than intentionally hit him to set up a force at the plate. Mighty Clout After running the count to tie and one, Geiger fouled one then poled a terrific drive over the head of right fielder Dickenson. It would have been a home run—for the Van to Open As Ram QB LOS ANGELES (AP)—Coach Joe Stydahar today named Norman Van Brocklin to start at quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams against the Chicago Bears here Sunday. The assignment will be the second starting call for the former University of Oregon passing wizard, and it may be the most important in his career. The Oregon Dutchman got the No. 1 role in the Ram’s recent exhibition game against Baltimore and the Rams proceeded to wallop the Colt’s. Ready to stop in against the big Bears, however, will be Bob Waterfield, ordinarily the starting man at the T-quarterback spot. Waterfield missed three days of practice this week, due to a leg injury, but he got back into action yesterday and looked good in both passing and punting. The Ears, headed by their two acces, Sid Luckman and Jolinny Lujack, arrive today and have scheduled a workout at Brookside park in Pasadena. Dons Tiff El Toro In Opener Tonight Backed by 18 returning lettermen, Coach Bill Cook's Santa Ana college Dons open their 1950 schedule tonight at 8 against El Toro Marine Air station's Flying Buils in the Santa Ana Municipal bowl. Practicing only two weeks, Coach Cook, head football mentor, plans to start ten returning Don lettermen and one fresh prospect in tonight's grid classic. Opening their season early in July, the Flying Bulls have already tucked one game under their belts in dropping a 12-0 fracas to San Diego's Air - Pac last Saturday night. The Marines lack greatly in depth, having only 40 gridsters on their 1950 squad while the Dons are backed by 22 turfmen. Returning signal caller, Ray Willsey of Tustin, has been the Don’s main standout in practice sessions. George Brancato, speedy returning halfback, will see a little action against El Toro but because of a knee injury, suffered in practice last week, will not be among the Don starters. In 33 games with Wyoming, Denver has won 29 and tied one. WE NEED USED CARS! and we're TRADING HIGH TO GET THEM!
