In answer to the demand of college girls, received in a recent fashion poll conducted on the campus of several midwestern schools, St. Louis designers of young fashions are choosing fall skirt hemlines at the mid-calf length, 12 to 13 inches from the floor. While the college girls vetoed the shorter skirt idea for street wear, in the survey, at least half of them cast votes in favor of the new short length formal which will go to many party dates. Indicative of the practical side Highway Patrol Boss Would Form Emergency Corps of Hot Rod Drivers Cypress Expects Record Enrollment If its attendance increases this year to equal that in the past few, Cypress is expected to hit a record 700 students when it opens its doors on September 11. Last year's peak was 606, but the 700 will not crowd the premises since new additions to the school now set the capacity at about 850. The new additions include eight new rooms that were added at a cost of $123,000. Nor is the building completed. Construction yet to be built includes an administration building, board room, nurse's room, and a cafetorium that will seat 500. To handle this mass of students, Cypress will employ 22 full-time teachers, a special art instructor, two part-time teachers, an office secretary, a superintendent, and a school nurse. In addition to these the cafeteria will probably hire three workers to serve an estimated 300 lunches daily this year. of campus wardrobes is the all-out approval expressed for separates, the mix and match variety or the skirt and blouse combination which look like a dress and will double as such, but which are really separates. California may need you in the civilian defense setup. It's the idea of Highway Patrol Commissioner Clifford E. Peterson. He says he'd like to include 'teen-age hot rod drivers and motorcyclists in the proposed Highway Patrol corps of more than 2500 men. What better group could you find, he asks, to carry out transportation and messenger service in event of an emergency? There was a time when the boys with the racing jalopies were not exactly popular with the highway patrol or any other law enforcement agency, for that matter. But not any more. On the whole, hot rodders have reformed. Peterson has found that they not only obey traffic laws of the state but that they police themselves through clubs. It's the independent hot rodder and cyclist who still is a problem child on wheels. Peterson plans to ask the state legislature, meeting in special session September 20, to authorize the reserve corps and provide funds for uniforms. Present plans call for recruiting at least two reserves for every highway patrolman. The reserves would carry no firearms, but would be used primarily to handle traffic in an evacuation or mass movement, man the patrol's radio network 24 hours a day and provide a motor pool and messenger service. Peterson thinks the hot rodders and motorcycle riders would fit into such a program. They're young enough to escape the draft. They have youthful stamina for long hours on duty in all kinds of weather. And they're excellent drivers. That's what the man said. Soon! WHITE Gazette Home Economist Good-bye to swim fins, sand in the sandwiches and dirty dungarees 'cause its "hi" to school books and football and the new fall fashions. Since it is back to school for so many of us—parents, students, and teachers—it is a gratifying thought to know that Anaheim schools are among California's best. This holds true in this area from kindergarten right on through junior college. Fullerton Junior college, which has been the alma mater of so very many Anaheimers was the first junior college to start anywhere in the nation—and has been going strong ever since. From a physical standpoint, our school buildings are of modern construction with beautiful landscaping and well equipped play grounds and athletic fields. The mild climate lets us use these facilities to their utmost. With tuition-free junior college training available within three miles of Anaheim, our cultural advantages are better than in most communities. Better look to your wardrobe, High School Will Greet 1200 Pupils Keeping stride with all other educational institutions this area, Anaheim Union High School's attendance will be up year. Paul H. Demaree, principal and district superintendent, expects to greet an enrollment of 1200 this year—an increase about 100 over last year's attendance. Actually, things will be coming at AUHS before the opening date on September 1st. Labor Day activities get underway in an extracurricular manner—when football practice opens. The first of the faculty visits will start on the following day, and those will continue the remainder of the week. New students to AUHS those who attended last year who wish to make school changes are asked to report the high school office on Wednesday. Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., is the day for registration students wishing to attend him high school this year. That will be followed by Sunday, Sunday, and black Monday. He and his pretty former fashion designer wife will vacation there until October 20. Then O'Dwyer will report in Mexico City as ambasador, if, as expected, the Senate confirms the nomination it received yesterday from President Truman. O'Dwyer's resignation as mayor does not become effective until Saturday, but city council President Vincent R. Impellitteri became acting mayor as soon as O'Dwyer left the city. Impellitteri will continue in the job until December 31, when a new mayor, to be elected in November, takes over. One of O'Dwyer's last official acts was to release a 750-page, two-volume account of the accomplishments of his administration. Elephant Bride Ready to Set Birth Record ROME (AP)—Juliet, the child bride elephant of Rome's zoo, is expecting her second baby any hour now. She stands on the threshold of setting another animal world record—but she's getting no sympathy from her family. Her giant mate Romeo romps blissfully in the next pen, grabbing every peanut he can from 1000 daily visitors to the zoo. Their record-breaking two-year-old daughter Roma, frivolous to the point of disrespect, is carrying on a flirtation with a hip-popotamus. Juliet, now alone in her hour of trial, began setting records when she gave birth to Roma at the tender age of 14. Most elephants wait at least until they are 18. Daughter Roma made her parents famous merely by staying alive. Of 15 elephant babies in Europe in the past 120 years, only Roma survived. Her immediate predecessor, born in Munich in 1938, lived only a few months. Another one, born in Paris, lived 14 days. But Roma is hale, hearty and husky, and now in her third year. Mama Juliet, who eats 160 pounds of food a day, will set another record when her baby comes. Zoo director Lamberto Crudi says she will be the first elephant to become a mother twice while in European captivity. Scaping and well equipped play grounds and athletic fields. Decontrol May Include County LOS ANGELES (AP)—If the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal rules for Los Angeles city rent decontrol tomorrow, it probably will mean the end of all controls in Los Angeles county. Area rent director Ben Koepke said yesterday he will recommend to national expediter Tighe Woods that all controls be lifted in the county, under such conditions. He explained that there are only some eight of 45 incorporated communities in the county which have not already voted decontrol. Trade in Anaheim. Building Program Sprucing Up Elementary Schools in Anaheim When the Anaheim elementary schools open their doors to their pupils on September 11, most of them will be improved by recent construction over last year. The rundown on the building program: Franklin—since the opening of school last September, new classrooms, a kitchen, and a lunch room have been added. These were dedicated last January 12. Mann—Not yet completed, the new additions include new classrooms, a kindergarten, and a shelter to the old building. The most construction work, of course, has been going on at Thomas Jefferson school, one which is not anything close to completion yet. At present it is 50 per cent completed. Lincoln has not even advanced that far. Classrooms are in bid. but construction has not yet started. Actually, the beginning of the elementary school year will start next Tuesday. This conclusion was arrived at following a recent survey of 20 colleges in every section of the country by Wilson Brothers, manufacturers of men's furnishings. The survey indicated some interesting changes in the college approach to attire. Most notable is the fact that color has at last officially "arrived," not the color that shrieks, or the purple-shirt-and-pink-tie type of combination, but color used tastefully and harmoniously. Conservative Regional differences were, of course, apparent in the results the Survey turned up, but there were several basic universals. College boys almost unanimously favor single-breasted suits, grey flannel in the East, blue gabardine in the Mid-west, brown tweeds, mostly herringbone in the West, and tropicals in the South. Favorite topcoat, the country over, is the fly-front, flap-pocketed covert.
